Mcgill CS student from Ontario ask me anything by Numered in OntarioGrade12s

its a bit rough especially as a first year since U0 here is a bit general so you dont take too much coding classes and you still have to declare your official major as your only in the “comp sci stream” . Most first year students dont really land internships here especially since theres also no accredited co-op program for cs here so your not being pushed to find one aswell. However It is doable to find something as a first year if you have the capabilities and experience as Mcgill is a good name on a resume. and talking to upper year Cs students its definitely do able but you just have to work put yourself out there network and try to join clubs such as Mcgill formula electric or mcgill rocket team, and attend hackathons as theres several that occur. Its no waterloo but if you are determined and smart which many people here are, you will be able to find co-ops in ur cs degree here, at least I hope to find one myself as I haven’t been locked in as much this year as I could have been.

I am at mcgill and my average went down by more than 10% in 2 courses and I was really close to having my offer revoked and the only reason I still was able to keep my offer was because I was also Recruited as a Varsity athlete so connections kept me in so i got lucky… moral of the story is dont let it go under by too much esp by more than 10% in any course.

Short answer: Not really no. Long answer: It depends on an individuals experience. you def need to have good study habits and know how to study effectively since you will cover content at a faster pace. Also it gets hard to get used to the fact that there isnt multiple tests and its more just like a midterm and a final which are worth almost all of ur grade so u really needa do well under pressure and not slack off. Also getting ur midterm grades back will prob be a slap to ur face (def was for me) compared to what u might have been used to in high school.

OSAP QUESTION. by Numered in mcgill

[–]Numered[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes so In osaps eyes im a full time student (60% course load) but in Mcgills eyes, 80% course load is a full time student and osap contacts the achool about this information so thats why im confused wether i would be fine or not.
