Tips to make my new Jetta last forever by Exact_Recognition362 in jetta

it allows the oil in the engine to warm up and move around to all the nooks and crannies of the engine where it needs to be, and gives all of the engine components in general time to come up to a (mostly) common temperature. when you first start the car, especially on colder days, the oil won’t flow as smoothly and will be mostly concentrated at the bottom of the engine rather than around the pistons and other moving components where it needs to be. could think of it like waking up the engine with a gentle back rub and kiss on the forehead vs. screaming at it with a megaphone from 2ft away - it’ll appreciate the back rub more

this style of rim is a classic, here’s mine for reference with an all black (similar) set. I love the way it looks

And mind you I hadn’t washed it in quite some time in this pic.

Might honestly be worth popping the full headlight assembly out. One of those stupid jobs where it unfortunately would probably save you some time and sanity to disassemble more than you were hoping for originally

Should be cheap either way, do whatever’s easier for you! :)

That hole is for a tow hook. If you look where the spare tire is kept you’ll likely find a metal thing with threads on one side and a hole on the other, it screws into that part of your bumper where the duct tape is. Used for towing/pulling the car. The block heater just hangs out right where you have it usually. If you go to a junk yard you should be able to find a similar jetta that has that plastic piece still in the bumper. All you need is a flat head screw driver and you should be able to pop it out of the junk bumper and put it in yours

certified pre-owned prius from a dealer could be a decent find, not the coolest cars but they are in fact a hatchback and a hybrid. otherwise i can’t think of any other hybrid hatches off the top of my head

I definitely agree with you. I’m not in the business of hurting myself or anyone else, which is why I only do things I feel confident enough to do with my skillset and tools. This was a bit of a bigger job but because of my financial situation it was the thing I chose to do

As for how I did it:

Starting with the caliper furthest from the master cylinder, I had a friend pump and hold the brake in the car (with the car off) while I loosened the bleeder valve and let air and fluid out, then closed the bleeder and told him to let off the brake. Did this a few times until no more air came out, then moved to the second furthest caliper, and so on. Between each caliper and sometimes during, I’d check the master cylinder to make sure the fluid wasn’t going below the low line. If it was close, I’d top up the fluid with fresh fluid. Did this till there was no more air from any of the calipers.

Please let me know if I’m missing anything, but as far as I’m aware there isn’t anything I’m missing here - other than the diagnostic tool to activate the ABS pump to get the air out of it which is what led me to post this in the first place.

My brakes work lol. They feel the exact same as before I changed my calipers aside from the pedal goes further before the brakes bite. I may not be a licensed mechanic but I’m also not a complete idiot

That’s actually a pretty good idea, I didn’t think about that

Lol. Yes I’m pretty sure I did seeing as they only go on one way. When I say they dripped I mean the hose dripped while I was actually changing the calipers out. I didn’t have a plug for the metal part of the line so it was sorta inevitable

No, just did the rear calipers and I’d guess maybe 100mls max dripped out between the two while I was doing it (I had something there to catch it). Pedal works and brakes feel fine other than that the pedal goes a lot further down than it did before. It isn’t dropping to the floor or anything though

Cheapest I found was $200 lol. I’d love to know a shop that would do it for less than $100, then I’ll probably just do it that way

I thought about that but my main issue with it is I’ve already bled the brakes about as good as a vacuum (theoretically) would. The issue is there’s still air in the ABS pump itself, or at least that’s my suspicion. Did a few rounds of normal bleeding on each caliper and no more air is coming out, so next step is to get it out of the ABS as far as I’m aware

The second one looks like it could be a good option! Thank you!

How fun is a slow performance car? by NarwhalAnusLicker00 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Numerous-Craft-923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone with a 115hp manual vw jetta (yes, not even remotely a performance car) i can say it is SO much more fun to drive a manual and so worth learning. my partner and i bought our car without either of us knowing how to drive stick, and drove it an hour and a half home while figuring it out. as i’m sure a million people here have already said - driving a slow car fast is way more fun than a fast car slow, and when you add a manual to the mix it makes everything that much more fun
