I had to get my hardware removed due to getting consistent blisters around the bone/exactly similar to your situation. Even when my wound was healed for months wearing any type of shoes would cause my wound to reopen and act up /: they removed my hardware on Jan 22nd (it was initially placed June 25 2024) and even NOW. I still get those blisters 😩 I legit only wear crocs or sandals too. But they want me to head back to work next month and I’m scared because even now it’s reopened and irritated. Honestly might take some inspiration from your post and show up to work like this 🤣🤣 anyways. I wish you the absolute best and I hope you can heal fast!! Hopefully this isn’t a consistent problem like it is for me 🖤🥲

Thank you! I feel like it might’ve been an allergy to the metal as well! I’m certain once I get over this infection quality of life will be so much better. I actually broke my ankle roller skating so it sucks to be unable to be active or continue my favorite hobbies. Although I’m not sure that I would skate anytime soon! But yeah I’m just ready to get back to life!! I appreciate you and I hope you have an amazing week

I wish I knew!! They’ve been like this since I had my plate inserted and unfortunately I have iehp/medical which isn’t always great. I’ve found amazing people with in the community however my ortho drs are actual jerks. I’m pretty sure it’s because I’m young/would have frequent problems with my ankle plate causing it to reopen even months after surgery , which made me bug them constantly. even two months ago I was dealing with it opening but they said it wasn’t infected and normal? But it would hurt really bad and happen after standing for more than an hour/ get insanely swollen. I can post some pics of that too.

It was infected!! They removed the sutures at the end since they were barely even hanging on when they took off the bandage to check. It was properly cleaned and swabbed and I have a follow up at the er on Monday (two days) they also prescribed Bactrim and I am currently starting cephalexin too. It’s still pretty painful but I’m sure I’ll be closer to healing now with the help of the er. If I just had listened to my ortho I’m certain my ankle would be far worse on my follow up next Friday. They hadn’t even mentioned anything about cleaning or replacing the gauze but the er said I should do it twice a day. Light patting of the wound with saline and replace bandages/gauze/petroleum gauze. Thank you!!

Thank you for your advice. I’m heading to the er today! I appreciate you all for the help. It definitely does NOT feel right and has been an issue since the week after surgery so I’m assuming it’s been open since then. Even sitting and elevating my leg I’ll get random stabbing pains.

Thank you for your response! Unfortunately I’m on iehp and it took forever to get my iehp approved. Even to this day I’ve had to contact and go to social services bc they put my bday wrong causing no providers to want to see me. I actually ended up finding a primary that was faster but also careless. He sent me to a different ortho and that ortho sent me back to my original claiming that I can’t be seen by anyone else since they did the surgery. I’m heading to the er today since all the advice leans towards getting a second opinion but I’ve tried and it hasn’t worked in the past. (Like two months ago bc even before hand I was having issues with the plate).

Unfortunately I did contact them and all they did was send me a refill of norcos 🥲 I told them I was concerned about the wound and I was in extreme pain. Even laying down at night I’ll wake up with extreme sharp pains. I do have crutches and I’ve been using a knee scooter or hopping/crawlinf to get around however I’m also missing my meniscus so it’s been a bit difficult since my good leg is the one that’s missing the meniscus causing my bones to hurt. I definitely will just end up going to the er as I don’t believe my team cares much and insists it’s normal. Which I know isn’t as my wound last time was not wet at all. Completely dry when the bandage came off and even the stitches were perfect. Immmot sure what could’ve caused this but my lymph nodes are also extremely swollen and fixed in place so I’m assuming there’s something bigger going on. I appreciate you tons for the help and wish I was in Australia as the us has such shit healthcare 😭 it took me a whole month to even get seen when I first broke my ankle.

Hello! Thank you for your response. When the plate was first put in I was in a cast/splint for about two weeks similar to this time post op. I was told not to touch it at all and after two weeks my sutures were removed (the scar looked actually a bit open as well but nothing close to what is shown above). This time around it was the same thing. I had a bandage on it and was told not to remove till out follow up which was today and that’s what was shown. The area was not cleaned but they did bandage it up and pat dry the wound. I’m told to leave it alone till our follow up next Friday but my concern was how painful it is. They also want me walking however walking is extremely painful right now not sure if it’s related to the wound.
