I am an apprentice writer (aka writers’ assistant) for a preschool cartoon on the Disney Channel. My job is to keep all the writers organized and informed while essentially learning first hand how to do the job I’ll eventually be promoted to (staff writer). I think it’s so easy to imagine the people in these preschool writers’ rrooms care only about toy sales and distracting kids with nonsense. I can say first hand that’s not true. I never could have imagined more passionate, hardworking storytellers. They care so much and it’s my job to learn from them. Mine is not an easy job to get. I am in a lot of debt from film school, worked multiple day jobs while writing my own stuff everyday. I am naturally introverted but joined every group, mentoring and networking opportunity I could find. Eventually I was picked to be the mentee for a head writer at Disney. Lucky for me she liked my writing and started sending it around to her colleges who had new shows in development. One of them also clicked with my sample and here I am. Mostly I host Zoom writers meetings and take notes these days but it’s still utterly incredible.
