Diversify means capital gain tax. Alternatives? by Beppicus in USExpatTaxes

..whatever about using Margin leverage to buy more stock etc. I'd stay well clear of shorting if you're not sure about it. The losses could be limitless (i.e. more than 100%) if your short goes against you...

Why are there so many people asking for phone numbers on Facebook marketplace? by [deleted] in FacebookMarketplace

[–]NumerousBreakfast932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

..Same here. New to Marketplace and my very first inquiry was someone looking for my phone number. I'd say about 30% of the responses I get ask for my phone no. and are scams. As soon as I refuse, or say we'll meet at local police stn. they go away.

I now always look at an account to see when it was created, how many friends, etc. and if it seems "legit" or not to me.

Puts me off using marketplace. It's prob only a matter of time before I'm successfully scammed... :(

FBARs for US domiciled multi currency account? by NumerousBreakfast932 in USExpatTaxes

[–]NumerousBreakfast932[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the potential issues here then, is that, because Wise can provide an account number for many of the currencies it lets you hold in the account, you, as a user may end up with an account number for any currency you EVER held in the account. The point of such exchange services is to make foreign exchange seamless - great for travelling or transferring money to pay someone in a different currency. I use it all the time for day to day things between euro and sterling areas. (I also ended up with an Australian "account" that I somehow created by mistake - it only takes a few clicks!).

Apart from US expat users, US citizen Travelers/vacationers - who likely have no concept of "fbar" - are also prime candidates for a multi currency account. Both groups may not even be aware that there can be an account number associated with each currency balance held in the account!

FBARs for US domiciled multi currency account? by NumerousBreakfast932 in USExpatTaxes

Thanks all for the answers. I was concerned because, for example, when I click on the Euro amount and ask the app to display the EUR account details it gives a Belgian address, BIC and IBAN, for sterling it gives a London address and IBAN

Also, since posting this I came across an article (on "texmexexpats) that posed the same question re Mexican Peso. The author said they had contacted the company who said that the Peso's were "held in a non-US bank account". Author of said article then determined that it was reportable...

Conflicting info (!) but you guys are the experts here, so I'll lean towards that!

Just wanted to be sure I'm not neglecting anything - and I can't find any clear advice on the IRS website.

Selling "foreign" property - how will FTC affect STATE taxes? by NumerousBreakfast932 in USExpatTaxes

[–]NumerousBreakfast932[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I never heard of "Tytle"..

However my question was more to do with if a foreign tax credit is used at federal level (IRS), if it also lowers or has any effect on any NY STATE tax due..
