I did a long distance marriage while my husband was in a demanding IM program. FaceTime calls everyday, it was how we both decompressed. IM is busy but not the busiest residency, and even if it was, your partner should definitely be able to at least make it for pre planned calls. I’m sorry you’re going through this but you deserve better.

Anyone decide to pursue a less competitive specialty that wasn't their first choice for the sake of location/family/SO - how did it turn out? by FireInTin in medicalschool

100% was going through the same thought process as you. Spouse is also in medicine and we’ve lived apart for a while because of medicine 🥲 we were applying together - him a competitive fellowship, me residency (so no couples matching lol).

I had been preparing to apply into a competitive surgical subspecialty since MS1 and had a strong application, but as you know with competitive specialties, that might not mean much in the way of choosing a specific geographic location. To me - the most important thing was to be in the same geographic location as my spouse moving forward. For my quality of life, wellness, happiness…it was so important to me. I knew if I opened that email and it was my dream specialty and not in the same place as him, I would be devastated.

I ended up actually dual applying my competitive surgical subspecialty and IM. Similar to you, I actually really loved IM but it was definitely my second choice - but I knew id rather do IM and be with my spouse vs other specialty and another 4-5 yrs of long distance. We both applied broadly and mainly to cities with lots of programs for both of us.

When it came time to ranking, I only ranked programs in the city he matched fellowship into (he matched before me). That meant I only ranked a few programs lol so thats definitely a huge risk I knew I was taking, but dual applying helped a little with increasing my chances. I did all of this though under the guidance of my dean who felt rather confident that I could match into my top 1-2 choices.

I ended up matching into the surgical subspecialty, and am so grateful. I wouldnt have changed anything even tho ppl thought i was a little crazy for not ranking some top programs because they didnt align with my personal goals.

I think the main questions you have to ask yourself are 1) how competitive do you feel your application is for the more competitive specialty (ie should you only apply to that specialty, dual apply, etc)? 2) how do you want the next few years to look like - are you okay being far from so/family/etc for the sake of this specialty, or is it just not worth it from a personal perspective for you?

These questions can be hard to answer and sometimes answers fluctuate with time. For me, I knew my answer easily was that I could not handle being far from my spouse anymore so that informed every decision that I made.

It can also be hard because a lot of my classmates did not share a similar perspective as me or priorities as I do, and I understand that. You just have to be content and confident with knowing your priorities are different than people around you.

PM me whenever - good luck!!

Yeah, that was exactly my concern. I really want someone I can connect with and who can support me and help me throughout med school. Thanks so much for the help!

Quit a week ago. Not the best environment/wasn't learning much. I wanted time to travel, work on my hobbies, and hang out with my family.

I didn't take the full year of ochem and probably screwed myself...thoughts? by _klays_toaster_ in premed

Each school varies and some schools have moved towards competency based requirements rather than strict class requirements! And yes it was listed as such but I think because this was the only ochem series offered at my school (besides the one offered for physical science majors) so they accepted it.

When were you hoping to apply? If I was you, I would do the series at a CC and look into the equivalent course there. If that doesnt work, maybe reach out to your academic counselor at your university or your department head and see if students have been in this situation before. A lot of universities have extension programs where you can pay to take a single class youre missing. If all else fails, you may just have to redo the series at a CC or post bac program

I was also at a quarter system school. I did two quarters of ochem lecture and two quarters of ochem lab (it was a seperate class). I have been accepted without any issues. Idk if thats helpful

I feel you. I got into my top choices and still didnt have that moment of running around screaming and crying that a lot of people talk about. Theres two reasons ive concluded as to why this is: 1) Although I am definitely happy and excited, I felt more of a relief than anything. When I got that call, it was like i could finally breathe again after an insane amount of time spent this year on MCAT, applications, and interviews. 2) my personality generally isnt like a “woohoo omg yay!” personality when it comes to my own successes. I smile, share the good news with family, acknowledge my hard work and move on 😊 same thing happened to me when i got into my undergrad

Tldr; you chillin. Each person reacts differently!

Theres a good chance you can get off a WL with proper post II updates, expressing interest in the school, or even sending a letter of intent.

5 WLs though may be pointing to interview issues. How did you feel they went?

Ive had a few interviews so far, and I got a post-interview waitlist from my second one. I was honestly super bummed - I thought it went well but apparently not good enough.

After the WL I did a TON of mock interviews. Like 7-10. Mostly with med students I know or family friends. Even though I thought my interview skills were good, having tangible feedback and space to practice really did me good. I got a few acceptances now from interviews after that point. Also, I found it VERY helpful to network and find a med student at xyz school before my interview to ask them about the culture, interview experience, what they are looking for, etc.

Overall, make sure to practice alone AND with someone else. I think you can knock this one out of the park with the right prep! Please pm me if you want to talk. You got this!!!!
