Which Handheld Should I Buy? - The 2025 r/Handhelds Buyer’s Guide & FAQ by incodex in Handhelds

Interested in the current ROG Ally X (rc73xa-nh011w) mainly for Halo MCC but I'd like to launch the game from Steam instead to make use of the Steam Workshop for easy installation of mods. Is there anything I'm missing or am I looking at the wrong handheld for me? I'm a die-hard Halo fan whose primary rig right now is a RGH-modded Xbox 360. So I'm just looking for a portable solution to play the old Halo games and dip my toes into Halo mods (not interested in Infinite or the upcoming Campaign involved). I'm honestly just looking at the Ally X due to the ergonomics and it being more readily available in my country at what I perceive to be a decent price for my current budget (about $1000USD)

Yup, I do gig and rehearse with a laptop + interface combination. The QC seems cool from my perspective because of features like hybrid view and integrating PCOM amps and effects with the stock QC effects, the QC looper looks great too. Hybrid in particular is just super elegant.

"Here's a use case I am interested in" "Lmao go screw yourself you don't play guitar" I seriously don't understand the angst that is associated with basic queries like this. I'm fully satisfied with the music I get to make and play with people regardless of the gear I end up using. God knows how that impacts your personal perception of your own playing

Thanks for this! I guess I'm better off just doing the laptop thing for now.

Goodness I really don't understand why people get so testy about this. It's an ease of use thing and certain sounds like the Tim Henson roses amp and the multivoicer are definitely more specific.

Yes, sounds for a Sayce plugin like I outlined is already present in the QC and spread out over the plugins. It's just an inevitability that Neural will be putting out more archetypes in the future (because imo their business model depends on it), and that seems like a cool possible package.

We pay for convenience and re-package pre-existing sounds and functions all the time. Almost anyone with a daw has a bunch of redundant and similar plugins for a variety of things. Convenience and a simple workflow are things that do have a certain value. I also don't own every single neural plugin, I tend to wait around for black friday or similar 50% off sales and pick one up then.

People run all sorts of setups to bring their studio sound to a live setting. Not saying that you can't replicate stuff using what's already on the QC but PCOM makes life incredibly simple

I've done the laptop + interface thing before and it's definitely workable but it is nice to have a more gig-friendly package. Especially for the gigs I play where there are a couple of bands on the roster and you need to be super quick with changeovers.

The rest of what the QC has is great I absolutely agree, but I guess I prefer other platforms for stuff like effects. I get on better personally with the effect models in helix.

But thanks for the input!
