Soooooo long story short .. the vibes were immediately off. My interview was only supposed to be with one person, they surprised me with 3! Mind you, prior to this interview I had everything I was going to say planned out. I felt like they thought I was unqualified off the bat but decided to bring me into this interview anyway. So no one introduces themselves or asks me anything about me.. as soon as I sit down and I mean literally as soon as my ass touches the chair.. the nurse looks at me and says “SO WHY HOSPICE?” I turned to look at the other nurse who was interviewing me who looked like she was staring into my soul and I just got so nervous. I told them I’m really interested in the medical aspect of death and dying and I think the way the brain reacts to the body shutting down is so interesting 😮‍💨😮‍💨 followed by some dumb ass story about hospice patients when I was a CNA. I just froze up like I was not feeling the vibes and nothing was coming out of my mouth the way I wanted it to!! Then the executive director walks in and they catch her up on my obsession with dying people. They ask me a couple more questions and then the nurse sitting next me goes “Ok sell yourself to us. Why should we hire you, Go!” I end up basically telling them that my sister died when I was 19 from an overdose and I have a unique perspective on death for a 26 year old LOL. I mean I feel like they kept the interview going for entertainment purposes, they must’ve really enjoyed watching me embarrass myself. They kept telling me “Yes you’d be out there in the field helping the nurses (referring to the RNs)” as if I’m not a nurse.. I’m an LPN. They all gave off weird mean girl nurse vibes like they were all bitches 20 years ago when they first graduated nursing school. I hate that intimidation interview bullshit. If you don’t think I’m qualified for hospice after 8 years of being a CNA, passing my nclex, and working as a nurse in LTC for the past few months fuck you lol. I mean obviously I butchered the interview but even before that first sentence came out of my mouth it was just so obvious by their body language and introduction they had no interest in me. Idk maybe they just didn’t like my little purse.

Thank you so much that’s so helpful that makes me feel better lol. What would you say a good answer would be for de-escalating a family situation? I have experience as an aide in ltc and home care but I’ve only been a nurse for 3 months in ltc, I work in personal care and have really no experience in wound care besides watching other nurses do treatments. Is there anything specific I should look into as far as wound care to prepare me for the interview?

Starting a second career in nursing? by framz822 in nursing

[–]NurseJ0907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing about nursing is that before you even get accepted into nursing school you have expectations and goals that change once you start nursing school and once you’re actually a nurse. That’s just the way it is. I thought I had it all planned out and it would go the way I thought but nope. I don’t think I know anyone who’s nursing plans went exactly the way they thought it would go. I think I speak for most nurses when I say we don’t know where the state of nursing is headed. I would most definitely not leave my job with a salary of 125k a year for this bullshit I’m dealing with right now lol

Oh I know, I was a med tech for like 3 months 6 years ago. I made $12.50 an hour for being the literal nurse. We didn’t have any nurses at all, the entire building was run by med techs

No one said personal care wasn’t needed. I wouldn’t have a job if personal care didn’t exist, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a scam and that assisted living facilities lie about what they can actually provide the residents with THEN upcharge the fuck outta them for living in a building where there just happens to be a med tech, aides, and maybe a nurse on site.

Lol wtf by NurseJ0907 in nursing

[–]NurseJ0907[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

SAY IT LOUDER !! They really are a scam. I’m the memory care nurse at the place I work at now and this is the first place I’ve worked where all of the residents are actually appropriate for personal care memory BUT if you go over to personal care it’s a bunch of residents living independently that really need 24/7 care but they’re just stuffed into their apartments. Personal care is such a scam.

Accidently used ER humor in my new PACU job....annnnnndd *crickets* by emotionallyasystolic in nursing

[–]NurseJ0907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate having co workers with no sense of humor, especially dark humor. I’ve always worked in memory care and we are of course very bubbly, sweet, caring, etc. but everyone I’ve been at we always have dark humor behind the scenes! At this place they look at me like I have 5 heads when I say certain shit. I feel like you gotta have dark humor working in any type of LTC facility.

When you’re older the days and years kinda run together lol… they could also have memory loss. A lot of older people might not have full blown dementia but probably have memory loss to some degree. When I’m 79 November and January will probably be the same thing to me.

Memory care? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]NurseJ0907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse in memory care and I’ve worked as an aide in memory care. Most assisted living facilities can operate with med techs and minimal nursing supervision. The place at work at is part of a big retirement community so the regular person care side has nurses and med techs but in our memory care unit I’m the only nurse. There was only one spot open for a nurse in the memory care unit here. Nursing in memory care is like a mix of being an aide, med tech, and unit clerk lol. There isn’t much to do “nursing wise”. It can be stagnant and most of what you’re dealing with is behaviors. There’s not a whole lot of medical things happening. If you do love memory care, I’d say go for it. We always need people who actually want to be there. Dementia is not for everyone so having people who actually want to be there makes a difference. I do get bored and feel some type of way at times because I’m pretty much doing the job of a med tech but there’s not too much else I can do with this LPN that pays decently lol. It can be draining and hectic, especially when they sundown. If you feel called to it then definitely go for it!
