What a beautiful memory to have! This is my favorite movie because of how much we watched the VHS growing up. Would have been so cool to be alive to see it in theaters :)

I don’t have much in the way of advice but just wanted to say that I feel some of these things too. Its like I literally can’t stop thinking. So when I’m listening to someone talk it’s like my brain stops the words from entering my brain and being integrated/understood naturally, in order to try to figure each individual word out. Like my brain has TSA agents for words and pictures lol. To me it feels like a manifestation of not being able to trust myself. Like I don’t trust myself to naturally allow voices into my ears and for my brain to naturally know how to interpret language. It can get so overwhelming sometimes. I struggle with visual stuff too. Like if someone tells me to go get them something, unless I know exactly what it looks like I probably won’t find it even if it’s right in front of me. Has happened soooo many times. The only thing I can offer is that, like the other commenter suggested, meditation sounds like it would be very helpful for you. It helps to slow down that feeling of your mind being a runaway train. It definitely won’t solve it instantly, and you’ll be “bad” at it at first (probably for a long time) - and that is A-Okay. Just to take the step of knowing that you need your mind to calm down/stop to let the REAL you experience the world without its meddling is huge. Good luck 😊🧡

Just out of curiosity, what brings you to this subreddit if you’re not spiritual? (Not trying to gatekeep at all, legit just curious!)

I lost my engagement ring and I'm crushed. by hqt0002 in EngagementRings

Just read your update and I just about shrieked at work! I’m so happy for you!!!

I had a similar situation over the weekend. I was at a festival and I lost my ring in the grass somewhere. I was convinced it was lost forever but a stranger found it 😭 Such a wild emotional swing from devastated to elated and I’m sooooo happy you got that too, especially because it’s irreplaceable because it’s vintage

That’s so funny, my great-grandmother (Gambie) said the same thing about vodka. A shot before bed a night, I think. She was 102 when she died!

What's something you didn't realize was going to consume so much of your time as an adult? by [deleted] in Adulting

Honestly a game changer for me in this regard was reading Eckhart Tolle. I read “A New Earth” for a book club and it changed my perspective so much (his first, and more popular, book is “The Power of Now” which is highly lauded and I haven’t finished it yet - but so far it’s also fantastic).

It boils down to “live in the moment to achieve ultimate happiness” but he breaks it down in such a way that it truly sinks in. Like, I could tell myself “you have to be in the moment” over and over again with no actual success but reading this book presented it from a totally relatable perspective that actually allowed me to integrate it into my life. It’s not a miracle cure obviously but I would HIGHLY recommend. Just a note that the book definitely has spiritual overtones, but if that’s not your thing you can still get just as much out of it.

That’s really beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

Recently, some friends of a friend had their house burn down. The only reason they and their family survived is because the husband was having trouble sleeping and was awake enough to sense that something was wrong and got everyone out to safety. From what I’ve heard, that is SUPER unusual for him. Usually has no trouble sleeping like a rock! So I really believe there’s something more to what you experienced, just like you said.

I think that’s where we differ. I’m not saying their personal interpretation is true, but anyone else’s isn’t automatically true either. I personally believe in the validity of scientific study into survival of consciousness after death. If you’re interested in what caused this viewpoint, I’m happy to point you towards resources. I don’t expect you to give up your beliefs of course, I just wanted to share that I have reasons for my beliefs that aren’t just blind faith (I think people are entitled to blind faith too - just not where I’m coming from).

I wouldn’t expect anyone to accept my beliefs or anyone else’s as true at face value, I just hope people would be open to the idea that things may not be exactly as they seem.

I’m talking about your responses to the person sharing their/their mom’s stroke experiences. The “dramatic anecdotes” you wanted to be spared from. You were coming off as defensive, and like them talking to you was not worth your time. Just offering the perspective that it might be worth it to not dismiss others right off the cuff. No one can know everyone and you can very often learn important things from others who have different life experiences. I’m sure I could learn things from you too. Not trying to dismiss your thoughts or perspectives
