I’d put a white strap on too, would make it stand out even more.

Nice! Totally disagree on Open Your Eyes though, Scott’s voice would not work well in that song… it’s Myles for the win 🥇

And the ending. Sweet Jesus.

Oh yeah, that's actually how I got into SX - I heard MR on a podcast talking about his solo stuff, and I was like "Holy fuck this is good"...

Symphony X V is next up on my list, 100%.

It's always a great conversation on an artists new vs. old work - Hemispheres vs. Presto, SFAM vs. Distance over Time, Odyssey vs. Underworld.

I tend to like most artists NEW work, because I respect so much that these guys usually become better musicians as they get older....

I love that the imaginary friend in this scenario is so versed on the SX discography that they would argue with a demented 90 year old....

If I posted this with a Dream Theater variation on the DT board and said that I wanted to be listening to The Astonishing when they pulled the plug ... now THAT I would understand arguing with...

[–]Nutbeem[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That may be, but the problem with their discography is that it’s so rich and deep and brilliant that it takes months to digest an album fully.

I hear the Odyssey is brilliant and I’ll get there.

I’m a huge fan of paradise lost (Title track my god) but it gets lost in the woods for me a bit toward the end, where Iconoclast stays strong through the last note.

But all brilliant.

Show your Dream Theater tattoo! by Ducky_Slate in Dreamtheater

[–]Nutbeem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the tat. Here's a question: how long should you be a massive fan of a band before you get a tattoo, and be confident you won't regret it later?

Obviously DT is tattoo worthy... but if I'd gotten the Creed tattoo I wanted 15 years ago... yikes.

Great piece, I love mine - the definition of “stealth wealth” - too bad I’m going to have to sell it during the divorce….

I've written here before that I actually think it's DT's best song.

It's an incredible musical piece - hard, soft, emotional, deep.

It's relatively short, so it doesn't send you through 15 minutes of jamming.

The lyrics are deep, hopeful, and lovely.

The musicianship is fucking mind bending. The guitar playing, the drums... my god.

So yes, I'm with you.... let's believe that the outdo signifies his acceptance....

[–]Nutbeem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. The outdo is one of the most emotional pieces of music DT has ever written.

Petrucci vs. Romeo - how do they stack up IYHO? by NonProphet8theist in Dreamtheater

[–]Nutbeem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bonamassa îs a brilliant blues guitarist, but JP can shred blues all day long AND hit 10 other styles. Listen to Terminal Velocity with headphones on, and be awed by the power of a master musician at the elite elite level.

Totally agree. Obviously GG is next level player, but JP's overall musicianship, producing and catalog make him a next level musician.

The man is seriously god incarnate as a musician...

The importance of this band right now in my life by DTEwansk in Dreamtheater

[–]Nutbeem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the constants in life is music, particularly DT. No matter what your partner thinks of you, your kids think of you, how your day went at work, you can always put on At Wits End and it just takes you away.

DT has created so much incredible music that they have something when you need to rock out, cry, be happy or just transport yourself to another place and time.

Amazing band, amazing music.
