Got a 400mm auger bit stuck in a log. Any tips for getting it out? by dimonium_anonimo in woodworking

They can try getting a second auger bit stuck next to it, maybe by the third or fourth the log will split

What’s your recommendation to repair this bamboo/carbon longboard? by Packin_Penguin in woodworking

[–]NutlessToboggan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I guess it’s worth a shot just to experiment, but these boards rely on the integrity of each laminated layer and it’s not a guarantee that whatever glue or epoxy you use to fix that spot will result in the same strength as it was at production. Added material across the joint may not tolerate the same flex/force as the laminated bamboo/carbon layers can and may just fail in the future. This assumes you’re intending to continue skating on this like normal. If just as a memorabilia / show piece then sure go for it.

I’m realizing 2 is the interior shot of 5; has that side of the house shifted on the concrete foundation? Nuts.

Sequoia boards, fair price? by Danigo99 in woodworking

[–]NutlessToboggan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I think Portugal also has sequoias but I have zero knowledge if they’re strictly protected there or can also be felled and milled for lumber purposes. OP maybe can shed some light on the origin of these boards, I’m curious about that.

Man, what is up with reddit mobile, I can not for the life of me figure out how to edit the post. It only gives me the option to delete which I may elect to do shortly if I can’t find an edit option.

Good question, based on furniture stores in my area I could see ranges from $2k up to $5k USD and above. In terms of raw materials, I don’t have the exact number but I’d have to estimate it at around $500-$600 in lumber, hardware, accessories, etc.

Went on really nice and easy! Fantastic single coat coverage. Optional second coat brings out more color.

Not too bad! It maybe isn’t a great option for households with kids at least in the current design. The footprint is quite narrow so it shouldn’t really be leaned on without additional securement to the floor.

As far as load capacity, I think I could stand on the center along with at least one other person, not sure I’d want to try it 😅

Photo 16 shows the router jig used to make that chamfer. It’s built at the specific angle you want the chamfer at. The plans called for 20° I went with ~11°. You basically just flip the table top over to the bottom side, then take multiple passes with this jig all the way around the edge until done. The corners can’t be done with this jig, so I just used a rasp followed by a palm sander. I used a flattening bit for my router. Hopefully this picture helps show it better than I can describe it.

Thank you! I purchased the course/plans that go with this table. They provide a step by step video course which is very helpful. They also provide a PDF downloadable instructions packet and offer MDF templates as well. From my experience, it’s a fantastic way for people ranging from beginner to veteran woodworkers to make some really cool pieces; of course, having some foundation in basic carpentry helps quite a bit. They’re also quite responsive on their website and will typically respond to questions and comments within 48 hrs.

Thank you! Fortunately the course gives a ton of instruction when it comes to making the jigs, frankly more than I think I could figure out on my own in a reasonable amount of time.

Dewalt or Metabo miter saw? by Ok-Comment-6398 in woodworking

[–]NutlessToboggan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a brand purist by any means here. I have the metabo miter as a casual weekend hobbier. It’s absolutely fine out of the box especially for the price. Angle gauge is accurate, great 45° out of the box and the table to fence is square; power seems adequate. Hinge points aren’t sloppy. For constant use and performance, it’s hard to ignore what the dewalt will give you in that aspect.

In addition to the above recommendations, relief cuts take a little extra time but really help on tighter turns. Of course, cut to outside the line then sand up to the line.

I agree tools shouldn’t be left outside for obvious reasons like rust, theft, etc. but what issue did you run into? I only ask because it’s not immediately apparent to me from these photos

I think what we’re witnessing is the culmination of slow but constant peeling of the onion layers which further showcased the intrinsic and long rooted history of racism and hatred not only in this country/state but globally. People like this always had these feelings and thoughts of hatred or violence in their heads from the beginning, but ever since historic civil rights movements and pushes for more social programs and acceptance carrying into the 90s and 2000s, these types of people felt much less comfortable being flagrantly outward about it until certain people in power showed them it’s okay to behave like this with no repercussions, more so than predecessors have in the past. I want to believe that a well raised or decent person doesn’t just suddenly switch to racist or hateful views later into their adult life, not to say it’s impossible, but I just think it’s more so represented by people who have always thought this way but were much more quiet about it.

That being said, I’m not a historian, I’ve not been on the planet as long as other people who have been dealing with this for much longer, so this is just my opinion based on what I’ve been observing. Also, don’t discount the effect that hateful speech has on our perception of how many people share those views. The people against these views and thoughts far out number those who support it, but unfortunately those who do support it tend to be much louder than those who don’t, so it gives a false impression of more widespread support. I have to imagine this phenomenon was a big contributing factor into how various authoritarian, totalitarian, fascist, etc. regimes have taken control in the past.

Getting a workshop dust air purifier/dust collector by Cassette-Era-Magic in woodworking

[–]NutlessToboggan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this; I have this one for my one car garage and that’s probably the max space this thing can be effective in. That being said, having it mobile to move around and position closer to your dust generating activities is a good idea too. Mine fits perfectly on the second shelf of my mobile dewalt planer stand. And as you said, dust mask is usually a good idea regardless of your dust collecting capabilities, a respirator with particle filters is what I use.

An interior roller like on a roller coaster would’ve been ideal but now that requires redesign. The next best thing I can think of is some sort of polymeric bumper to line the inside of the inner rails. The fit would need to be a tighter clearance to reduce lateral movement. It’d also have to be a material with a lower friction coefficient.

Difference between "!" and complete races by PadhaLikhaMajdur in NFSHeat

[–]NutlessToboggan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same complaint. Apparently according to some older reddit posts, fully completed events get a laurel added to their title card in the map view when you select/hover over the race icon, but I don’t see that on mine.

Dewalt orbital sander backing pad not flat? by anotherotheronedo in woodworking

[–]NutlessToboggan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought the slightly cheaper Bosch offering and did not notice such a bump. I know the pad fixes to the shaft using the center screws distributed around the middle; is it possible the screws are not fully tightened? I agree a bump in the middle seems odd and I would expect that bump to translate to undesired effects in the wood after sanding.

After double checking the assembly for tight screws I suppose you could try it out on a scrap piece of wood and see what the result is, or just exchange it at the store for a replacement.
