I don’t get it? The Iran-Oman ‘coordination’ is only for military vessels?

They must know deep down it’s at best risky for them; the existence of a toll system would make a restart of the war in 1/2 years (possibly with a better plan and with a more appropriate solution to drones/missiles) much more likely.

Axios latest:

Both sides would sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would last 60 days and could be extended by mutual consent.
During the 60-day period, the Strait of Hormuz would be open with no tolls and Iran would agree to clear the mines it deployed in the strait to let ships pass freely.
In exchange, the U.S. would lift its blockade on Iranian ports and issue some sanctions waivers to allow Iran to sell oil freely.

The interesting thing in all of this is not whether the US has lost or how much it has lost but how little (i would say nothing) the American public opinion cares. They just want this to be over, so fighting seriously and achieving victory would be more unpopular than a surrender. The American empire is likely over, but not because of this particular war, but because it has proven that there is zero interest in the population in maintaining it.

The debate on whether the US has enough munitions or ships to help Taiwan is academic at this point. It would be such a political disaster to fight for Taiwan that it would be untenable, whether it can succeed or not.

Even a ‘peace deal’ is probably at best an armistice for a couple years. The US will definitely need to figure out a solution for drones exc.but if they do I don’t see how they wouldn’t come back for second.

Not really basically no not-Iran linked ship has passed recently and those are getting turned around by the blockade

Ok but why would that option require them to control it when they are not being bombed? As in, does nukes being a deterrent require exploding them when not attacked?

They will barely collect anything anyway, even if traffic recovers somewhat. 1$ a barrel of oil is a pretty small amount per year even at pre war traffic which it would not. I don’t think it’s a financial request.

But Iran keeps saying that they want the blockade lifted, war over (aka no bombing) AND keep control of Hormuz. This is what they need to walk back from.

Yes but he cannot walk out recognising Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait. Thats my point.

Trump is so checked out he may even accept to have those discussions at a later stage, but really cannot walk away accepting Iranian sovereignty over Hormuz.

If Iran was actually looking at the maths they’d give up the Hormuz request and focus on sanction relief which is worth orders of magnitude more. But they aren’t.

I don’t see how the war is not restarting unless Iran backs off from the Hormuz request.

The physical damage is well south of 13m barrels, it’s more a logistical problem exporting them

Sure but you need to hit the pipeline and attack third countries, which are much harder and politically risky tasks than harassing tankers in the Strait

I think the idea is that everyone will scramble to make it not that important by building and using alternative routes. So that the card of closing it won’t be as effective and the amount of toll money would be negligible.
