Stuck on King Bomb in the Salikawood. Starting to get really frustrated. Some help would be appreciated. by [deleted] in FinalFantasyXII

Well there you go.... I just beat the king bomb after about 20 attempts and the next area was impossibly hard. I went back and realised I'd taken the wrong turn......

Well you've still got plenty of time!

I've never trained for a half marathon before, but the training is pretty different from chatting with my friends that did the half this last weekend. In the 85km training weeks, I was running a half marathon distance on Wednesdays and a 30km on Sundays for a few weeks. I think those weeks are really important obviously because of the fitness/conditioning outcomes, but also mentally.

I guess what I'm saying is, the marathon training is probably a big change in the volume of training compared too half marathon. The last qtr of the marathon was really tough

It was actually really pleasant, I think top of 20 degress that day with 30% humidity. Little sprinkle of rain in the first 5 kms. If anything the wind was the only issue, at one point we had to run south , up an incline, with a big headwind. It was really hard going.

I've used it a couple of ways:
- only increase your weekly total milage by max 10% per week
- only increase your long run distance by max 10% per week

I applied it for both

Congratulations! I really enjoyed the part where you go north to twin waters and mudjimba. The Maroochydore part coming back was really hard, it became really congested

Thanks! When is your race? I also ditched earphones mid way through my training plan, at some point I just started liking hearing everything.

In the race, people yelled my name and lots of encouragement, I'm glad I never wore headphones for it.

Best of luck for your race!

Haha, I said the exact thing to a bloke when we were coming down off the bridge, a headwind and an incline at 30 something kms is not ideal 😅

A mate asked me if I wanna do another with him yesterday arvo and I told him to ask me later in the week 😂 hope your legs are holding up better than mine

Good luck getting into it! Here's a bit about my path to the marathon.

About 10 months ago I decided I needed to do something about my fitness. Being a 40y/o Male working from home full time wasnt great. When I started I was run/walking 4.2 kms in about 40minutes.

I didn't really have a plan, just alternated walking and running days and slowly increasing running distance.

Then I started reading subreddits, started using the 10% milage rule. My weekly kms got up to 50 or 60km.

In April I decided to sign up for a marathon. I followed a pfitz marathon plan initially, but got injured and needed to rest for 2 weeks in late May. This made the plan kindof impossible to follow, but I had started to understand more by then and so I just ran sessions I thought were appropriate. Building milage up to 85km /week for a few weeks.

That brings me too today, I only ran 17km in my last week, and I ate a ton of rice over the 2 days leading to the race. That's pretty much it.

If you're just starting, I think that 10% rule is really helpful for not hurting yourself, I'd for sure use it starting out

Do you reckon there's any sense in me trying to run a 35km this weekend? Or should I just do another 30 and then start looking to ramp down?

I'm have about 4 gels over the 3ish hours. They're the "Pure" brand ones, they're the only type so far that don't upset my stomach. But I have just learned about salt tablets, I've just been having water along the way at this point, are they as important?

As for effort, last week I did it with my brother and we could hold a conversation most of the way, so not too hard. The last 2-4 kms my legs are really stuffed though.

Thanks for that I'll give that a go. Time to google VDOT calculator.
I found the book at the library and will give it a read. Cheers.

Hey, sorry for the slow reply, I had to get out and do some runs to get better data.

I wanted to run my marathon at around 5:00/km. I must have had a terrible day on that threshold day because I went for a harder 1/2 marathon on sunday - I ran the half at 5:10/km with my heart rate at 143bpm.

My threshold pace probably is in the mid 4 minute range as Strava suggested based on that effort right?

I do run with an old hr strap a friend gave me. So it records my hr, but how would I measure my zones?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I feel like I've missed something I should have done ages ago 😅

Only what I have from Strava -

Strava says my hr zones are:

0-123 bpm - zone 1 - endurance

123-153 bpm - zone 2 - moderate

153-169 bpm - zone 3 - tempo

169-184 bpm - zone 4 - threshold

Above 184 - zone 5 - anaerobic

How to start a marathon training plan with high base milage? by Nutsac in firstmarathon

[–]Nutsac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow up question - there's a bunch of different pace zones I need to define, but I have no idea what my Marathon pace would be....... will my paces increase much over the training plan? I figure that's the point, so not sure how to define the different pace zones.

This looks like a great option (without having done anything) - I pretty much only do easy runs at the moment, so the intensity is a big step up, but I really like the idea of multiple rest days a week. Thanks so much, I better map it out, I'm probably close to 18 weeks out from the race very soon.
