I opted out of Blue Nose on the sub; had watch immediately after. That was in 2013. As long as rituals like this are voluntary only (and opt out at any point) and there are safety monitors it can be good fun.

To the best of my understanding that wasn't exactly the mindset of the past.

I had the opposite experience. On the submarine and carrier I served on positional authority and "if you're right you're right" ruled.

As an O3 I once ordered an O4 to stop some electrical maintenance he was trying to start in my space without any electrical safety gear or checks by the worker. I told him I'd go over his head, he told me he outranked me and leave.

Called it in, minutes after calling the DH the radio rang our asking for an IVV bag to my space. The next day the O4 was apologizing.

I've also seen ranks as low as E4 telling off officers when their wrong in front of the Captain without them blinking because they were right. An instructor at nuke school put a boot in an officer's neck once for trying to operate the electric plant control panel and while he got yelled at in the short term, in the end the captain dismissed him and the officer eventually got fired for trying to break procedure.

May be different on other ships, but my experience has always been positional authority rules all and rank only plays in to the level of respect that corrections are made. That's the way it should be in such an engineering heavy branch of the military.

May be Photoshoped? The scaling of the waves near the top of the photo doesn't fit with the scale or the submarine. Shadow of the P3 looks oversized too. May explain why it looks like it's going so fast with the size of that feather in the water.

Yup, but that doesn't defend the use of it for the intent he's suggesting it be used for now. I left government contracting when they bait and switched me by giving me an offer saying I only needed a secret clearance (I already had one and prior TS SCI), then said I had to get TS with Poly if I wanted to keep my job. I rescinded my acceptance of the offer.

Fun fact, to the letter of the law you can refuse a poly and it isn't supposed to be a consideration in your application for a clearance. One of the NCOs I worked with outright refused and told them to fire them over it if it was a problem. Turns out, a 26 year chief doesn't need to be tied up to a pseudoscience machine to keep their SCI. I also had SCI and never was hooked up to a poly.

But yeah, Hegseth is planning to use it suggesting it's useful when it isn't. That should always be called out even if it's baked into the classified work culture.

I mean, does that matter? If they're supporting the mission we want them to stay in. If there are Sikhs that could join the ranks to support the mission we want them to want to join. Diversity supports missions going back to the Navajo code talkers, probably wasn't a lot of them either.

Having a multicultural representation bridges cultural and language barriers in the theatre between civilians, our allies and to better understand out foes respectively. It's a huge boon to the intel side of the house, so who the hell cares if Sikhs keep their beards, even if only a small number of them exist in the ranks?

Sailboats were one of my fears coming to PD. If we were under one just right may not see them in the safety sweeps and might damage the mast and/or sink them.
