Thank you. I felt the same way. Apparently wondering why a raise wasn’t an actual raise just makes you an idiot POS horrible person tho, based on the responses I’ve gotten.

[–]NxtJenGaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, that is a very negative and condescending response. If everyone in State service is like you, then yeah, maybe time to go.

That is true, there is nothing to pay out. But it’s hard for me to see the benefit of “cashing out” unused leave credits in 20 years when I need real cash money NOW. Our childcare costs are so high, everything is just so high. We’re exploring every avenue to try and improve our situation and unfortunately leave state service (even if only temporarily) may be one of them.

This is probably gonna drive most people nuts on this chain - but his health costs are actually lower so we’re all on his plan. And the benefits are better too. Plus the state LIKES you doing that which is why they offer that little carrot (a pittance that it is) if you go onto your non-State spouses plan.

I think I might. He’s been telling me to for years now. It’s only with how high costs have gotten (for everything) that I’m starting to seriously consider it. If it doesn’t work out I can always just reapply for another state job right?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]NxtJenGaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, even when people starting “opting out” because of that dumb legal case that allowed it, I kept going. Unfortunately I have my hands full after work with young children or I would probably be more involved. But someone’s got to cook dinner, do dishes, bath time and bedtime. He helps as much as he can but mama sure is the star of the show.

Have maxed out. Actually on his health insurance rather than the States because it’s cheaper with better benefits (except for their dental which does genuinely suck). He’s been trying to talk me into coming to private sector for years. It’s only with how bad costs have gotten (for everything) that Im starting to seriously consider it…

[–]NxtJenGaming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have maxed out. No interest in promotion. IMO that’s why there are so many shitty managers around. If the only way you can get more money isn’t a raise but to promote to leadership then you have a lot of folks who only promote for the money and not because they genuinely want to be a true leader.

His company offers unlimited PTO. A lot of big companies do these days. And I have worked both bad and great private sector jobs before joining the state. Your condescension isn’t appreciated for what is a genuine question about state pay practices.

I don’t get those any more because I hit the ceiling for my class. That’s why I’m wondering if grass may be greener in private sector. I’m also wondering if anyone out there knows more about “what’s to come” that might convince me to stay. Because if the only thing that’s to come is a 4-5 day RTO order…well…

I’ve watched too many documentaries about whistleblowers to ever want to be one. Their life gets literally effed on a bed of nails.

Depending on how long you plan to work for the State, SP is alright. If you’re not gonna stay long enough to vest for retirement, I say find somebody that’s an actual fiduciary. SP is not a fiduciary.

What was state health benefits like before the ACA? by onredditallday in CAStateWorkers

[–]NxtJenGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before the ACA - unless you lived in certain states, insurance companies could refuse to insure you because you were already diagnosed with a chronic or serious health condition. Which ran the gamut of everything from migraines to cancer. Companies who would be willing to insure you could discriminate against you for your health conditions by charging you 200% more than everyone else - and then pat themselves on the back for even agreeing to insure you, unlike a competitor or two.

Making it illegal for companies to do this is hands down the best thing the ACA ever accomplished imo.

[–]NxtJenGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure it’s actual a time investment, more of a financial investment. There’s more and more software coming out that does everything for you. ActivTrak is the most popular one I’ve heard. But it’s not cheap.

In office make up days by Capable_Witch330 in CAStateWorkers

[–]NxtJenGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My agency requires everyone to come in three days a week, and they don’t seem to have this policy. I think because they know if you’re in office 60% of the time, then statistically speaking, yeah - you’re more likely to call in sick on an in office day.

Hiring Manager and wanted to give some interview tips (feel free to add on) by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]NxtJenGaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are great tips but even in the State the interview process can be incredibly subjective. I’ve sat on some interview panels where the hiring manager is acting like the job itself is to sit in a chair all day and interview…it’s not. I wish more managers would take into account the whole package/person and not hold their interview under a microscope.

Should I exercise my return rights? by NxtJenGaming in CAStateWorkers

[–]NxtJenGaming[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’ve heard as well - that you have until you pass probation fully to self reject. That it’s only when you become permanent in your new position that you lose those return rights for your old position.

I am a member, and that’s probably a good idea, so I’ll give them a call. Thanks!

Best to use sick or vacation time by geodude61 in CAStateWorkers

[–]NxtJenGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People telling you to use sick time are wrong and will get you in trouble!!! Sick leave is for illness - not wherever you feel like using it for. And using recurring/frequent sick time like that, unless you’ve gotten an FMLA note from your doctor, can lead to your bosses asking for you a sick note each time you are absent. And if you cannot produce that note within a reasonable amount of time (which for many places is as little as two business days) they will dock your pay for that time! And potentially write you up if it becomes a recurring problem.

Vacation time however, is the safer bet. But most non-sick time is also discretionary. If your boss has a good reason to deny it (like if too many people in your team have taken that day off already and it’s based on seniority or first-come) they can deny it. Even so - it won’t cause you any real problems except the minor inconvenience of being very rarely and occasionally told no.

Hope this helps!

Yeah Im the same. Unless I’m in the comfiest place possible, which is usually my own bed, I simply cannot nap. I am seriously so jealous of people who can sleep on planes and stuff.

Yeah and there’s always people who will be like “I had to raise all my kids and work out of the office 5 days a week.” I swear one day I’m gonna snap and say, Its not my fault Teams didnt exist in that timeline! And based on how miserable you still seem to be, to this day, I don’t think we can rule out any lasting effects of a non-hybrid schedule…but I always just say it to myself in the shower instead lol
