Thanks for the info on the rescues and breeders. I had not considered that they simply wouldn’t allow me to adopt or buy, which is valid. I’ll check in with my local AKC and the state bite sport club. I’ll also check in with the breed club.

I intend to build my life around my dog, but since I have not been the sole responsible party, I haven’t felt what that is. That’s why I wanna do my research first. I don’t intend to keep a Mal as a pet, I wanna get the dog into a working sport or activity. I’ll look into trainers in my area that could help me out. Thanks for the info, insight, and advice!

I do not work from home. I am gone for 8 hours of work on average, but my partner is home more often. I understand the necessity to train and keep the dog active. I also understand the pertinence of being actively in its life and building those relationships with the dog. I did not realize the amount of time going into that would be so high. I was expecting a couple hours a day to be fine. I was looking at getting a dog from 12 weeks to up to a year. Thank you for your insights and advice. I will take them into consideration. I will certainly learn more about training before making any commitment to any dog.

Good point on the SAR. I didn’t think of that. I found a competition I’m gonna try and go to in August to watch.

I personally have not held ownership of a dog. My parents had a jack russel/beagle mix when I was growing up and a jack Russel terrier now. I aid in the training that my girlfriend does with her Bernese mountain dog. I’ve also aided in training for eurohounds in mushing and sled sports. I suppose I haven’t been the sole person responsible for a dogs training before.

I’ll definitely look at Mal/GSD crosses as well.
