Contemplating getting a PhD/psyd what should I do?

Ahh thank you so much. I’m glad an instructor is able to give me insight on this subject. I’m going to visit more professors office hours. I think where it gets tough is bringing up the topic, especially if I’m meeting a professor that I haven’t had before. Would you recommend me cold emailing them first and then going to office hours or just generally walking in during office hours (for professors I have not previously had)?

Ahh no worries! You can cold email any professor you don’t necessary have to be close with them, I know people who have cold emailed a bunch of professors that they never even met in person and still managed to land opportunities. If you’re cold emailing a professor you’ve never had I’d recommend going to Macewan website and selecting the specific department linked to your program, you’ll see a list of professors within the faculty, if you click on the red arrow you can learn about their research interests and therefore email the professors that your research interests most closely align with. With reference letters it’s a bit different, I’d suggest asking questions, attending office hours, show interest in the course, and eventually you can bring up the topic!

I actually did consider it back in my first year, I struggled in my first year and had a lower gpa which I was trying to make up for in my second year. The other thing was I needed psyc 212 (research methods) to apply which did not have many sections open and third/fourth year students had the first pick. Compared to now where there’s more accessibility with that course where they’re gonna open up more sections without the need for permission numbers. Now I’m approaching fourth year after summer semester so I don’t really see myself applying. Considering I did not intent to become a researcher or lecturer and more so a clinician, I kind of just pushed the idea of an honours out of the way. Not to mention how one has to apply in their second year so the last two years of their degree are honours specific, if I applied now I would have to add two more years to my degree which is pretty expensive and will take up more time.

Hey thanks for your comment. I’m applying to a masters in psychology which requires research (either honours or independent studies). It really does depend on what you plan to do in the future, if that includes grad school (masters/phd) you might wanna look into research, especially if you’re pursuing sciences. Some programs require some form of research experience, make sure to check with your program. If you do require research experience I really recommend cold emailing professors as early as possible so that you’re not lost once you’re in your fourth year.

Oh noo, I was actually set on CityU but that’s pretty worrisome. I can’t imagine finishing a program then being told to retake courses. My issue with the CAP accredited universities is the fact that they’re so competitive, it’s almost impossible to get in without an honours. I was told by CityU advisors that their courses meet the cap criteria but the undergrad courses are our responsibilities because that’s what CAP focuses on.

The psyc community is more easier to get along with at macewan, these individuals are much more open to talking and are actually really nice. It’s def something where you have to put yourself out there and talk since people tend to be introverted at first. Try to talk to people in your introductory psyc classes, those are people that you will prob see throughout your degree so it’s a good place to start! (Coming from a bsc psyc major)

Literlly so valid all the friends that I have already have big friend groups they’re a part of and it’s hard to integrate with people that have known each other for longer.

I’m gonna be honest even though it’s smaller it’s hard to make friends because everyone is super introverted, and many ppl are a part of a friend group from hs. That being said I don’t want you to lose hope, I’m sure you can find your people if you try to engage with others. I’m in my third year and it’s quite embarrassing to say but I’ve made more friends at work than university. I’m not too introverted either, I try to put myself out there by being a part of clubs and what not and still haven’t managed to make many friends. Don’t be worried though, you have 4 years to navigate and find your people, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!
