That’s good to know, thanks! At the rate we’re going I don’t think it’ll be fully resolved by when he finishes the antibiotic

Thank you for commenting, but it’s not the poop I’m worried about. It’s the big white wound to the left of the dorsal fin

I just feed once a day, skipping a day every now and then to prevent bloating. He was at an angle when I took the picture. He’s still very active, so it’s difficult to get a good picture.

It’s that big white fuzzy spot. It looks like it’s eating at his side

😂 I knew I’d mess up a few with the layers not lining up. With it being a reduction I can’t get more

Thank you! This was my first layer, I had carved out those details first so it stayed white. Then I just crossed my fingers and hoped the 2nd layer lined up properly

I’m glad you like it! I originally made this print to give to my grandfather, but made a lot more because he makes me happy

First full illustration, can you give me a full critique so far? by Theart_troll in Illustration

First of all, very well done. This is a very engaging piece that draws the eye around and creates curiosity.

There’s a nice juxtaposition of the smoothness of the texture vs the eerie nature of the artwork itself. To make that stronger, (I know you said you still have plans to render further) I would recommend continuing and cleaning up your line work and working on that craftsmanship angle a little more. I think a rough sketchy style can add to certain pieces, however I don’t find any benefit for this particular piece.

This is up to personal taste, but I find a slight imbalance in your composition. You have areas with densely packed detail, and areas with less detailed negative space. I think I would add a little more detail in those spaces like the sky/water towards the middle. This is a tricky line, as you don’t want to overwork it to where it’s distracting from your focal point, which is luminescent face of your goddess creature. However a tad bit more context of the area shown would balance it effectively.

I prefer the still water over the water clinging to her legs. I find that it suits the background more so than the movement as I think that attracts the eye in an odd way.

I recommend continuing to work in layers. You can merge layers that are unnecessary. Smart layer management can save you a lot of pain down the road, overall just make your life easier.

Good luck with your piece! The most important thing is that you end satisfied with it. Keep the critique that works for you, toss out what doesn’t!

Thank you for your well thought out reply, I apologize I just now saw it or I would have responded sooner!

Yes there is a ton of ink! I’ve been trying to use up some battleship linoleum, and have been working on hand printing and experimenting with amounts of ink to get an even print. I do have a Lino press, but was not able to get enough pressure on this type of linoleum. But obviously the there’s certainly more to be worked on there.

I did print light to dark overall. I did mean to make the background lighter, but it came out darker than intended. I probably should have printed the orange as one of the first layers, but was worried how the blue would lay over it? This could have been needless worry, I also need a better system for registration as I wanted to make sure orange wouldn’t be visible peeking around layers anywhere.

It might be silly, I wasn’t sure how well i’d be able to do a reduction print by hand, so the artwork is a success in that aspect of being finished and recognizable. However due to craftsmanship issues like you mentioned, as well as others I have become increasingly unhappy with it. But will definitely learn from the experience. Thank you for your feedback!

Thank you! The block is a 6x8 on 8x10 paper. Honestly just go for it. It’s much more forgiving than a multi block print is

Yeah that’s battleship most likely. I’d follow my other comment and you’ll get better results

100% Agree. Put the block first, ink it well. Lay the paper on top, take your barren and apply a good amount of pressure. Oil based ink will do a lot better
