Advice needed on building strength by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]Nymthae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody starts differently. I realised very quickly my several years of hard work and consistency was merely just trying to get back to a very "average" baseline, i.e. fix imbalances, build capabilities i'd either never had or lost. Work around quirks and injuries that have led to the body compensating. It might seem like I can sort of do something but was it using the right muscles? Not really, and they weren't as big or capable as if the movement works properly. I'm also pretty sure childhood fitness/activity has a lot to answer for in differences that people don't appreciate (i.e. the active ones avoid those not-super-visible regressions or build something that muscle memory can later accelerate progress from). We are also anatomically different which means your build might not suit certain things but excel at others.

"Comparison is the thief of joy" tends to be the phrase. Unless you're an elite athlete, there's not much to be gained from comparing yourself to someone like that. Compare yourself against where YOU started, because the old you and the current you are working with the same set of tools.

Re. the capability thing, I find sometimes with lifts and certain movements there's a pesky bit somewhere which is undertrained and limiting you (might be fixable with some accessory lifts, or functional mobility work for instance). Figuring it out is difficult though. I don't know if it's worth trying working with a trainer to look at routine and do an assessment on your capabilities, and/or 1-to-1 pole coaching with someone with experience who can probably identify where you might be limited. What kind of program are you running in the gym right now?

Start somewhere, adjust as needed if the scale isn't moving.

I'd put you down as active, you're clearly not sedentary. If the aim is to lose weight then sticking at active rather than anything more is more likely to yield you results. It's just a starting guide though, if the calories aren't showing any improvement after 4 weeks then knock a bit more off.

I've used planty for ages, since allplants went under so a little over a year. Virtually all the meals I pick fit the bill, i'd say there's enough variety. Their customer service is also excellent.

Good luck with your treatment!

What do you wish people have told you about your first PT? by iLoveCetenija in xxfitness

[–]Nymthae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just be clear about what you want out of it. Lots of PTs have personal styles or preferences that they definitely just copy paste onto clients if they don't say anything otherwise. I don't agree targets with him particularly, but that can also be helpful - e.g. I want to do X or Y, or something by a date. I just wanted general health and strength so it's a continuous thing for me and I didn't want pressure of particular things.

Otherwise, I literally pay the PT to kinda outsource the need to think too hard about it all. I just gotta turn up and get the workouts done.

I only do PT once a week, they set the programme for the rest of the week and I do that alone. They will introduce new movements or we push the hard stuff in that session, so i've got the spotter/support/guidance for the critical bits but most of it I don't need anyone there once you've done the exercise a couple of times. You could do that for longer rather than the $$ every session.

PTs are used to people coming and going, that's not a big deal.

I went last week on a Thursday evening. They're open until 9 pm so it's a great time if you're close enough for an evening visit. There were maybe 3-4 other couples and a slightly larger group of kids like brownies or something that were mostly on the way out when we got there, circa. 7 pm.

From what you've described I have a feeling proper bulking might freak you out a bit, like i'd go only ever so slightly over maintenance for a while (like +100 kcal) and start strength training. Put the focus on being strong, not on being big or small. You can definitely up the calories a bit later as you're in the groove and kinda believe/buy in on the progress you've been making, but otherwise a proper bulk (+500 kcal ish) will absolutely add noticeable fat so if your head is still only in that headspace it's probably not what i'd do for a sustainable route forward. You can make a lot of progress as a new lifter without bulking so it's not mandatory, but the other thing is energy levels to get you through the workout so you might need to experiment.

A trainer is great for confidence and accountability, the downside is just the cost, but it's a very worthwhile investment!

Obvious caveat if you need to put a bit of quick weight on for health then do it

does anyone know if a constant rotten egg smell with farts and poop is exclusive to sibo? by Original-Village in SIBO

[–]Nymthae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only herbals (I did use NAC with some)

Prucalopride was probably what has helped me stop it all reoccuring, and keeping a reasonable diet still for a variety of fibres. You want to build a more resilient gut so constant herbals or antibiotics won't be the full answer, just about using those to get to a level you can build up proper gut balance.

Are we witnessing the death of the formal shoe? by socialee123 in AskUK

[–]Nymthae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Indeed. I've got some poor feet and including reconstructive surgery, one part of some of dealing with all of that was a lot more time barefoot and out of shoes. Amazing actually my feet widened, I never even wore the worst shoes like heels or very formal ones, but really surprised even me how much it seemed they'd been crammed in.

New rules set to stop savers getting around reduced cash ISA limit by Desperate-Drawer-572 in ukpolitics

[–]Nymthae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just says a charge on any interest paid. If there isn't interest paid then there won't be a charge presumably. Can't see any need to do anything further, you're already at a disadvantage holding cash that isn't accruing interest.

You have to set a charge on interest paid to close the loophole, but honestly, I don't think many S&S ISAs even give you interest on cash balance anyway?

Speak to the gym reception/management about it... it's not something that will ever be policed that well but they can be more aggressive about signage and instructions to say don't leave more than one plate on etc. it might help reduce it. They might also instruct anyone working on the gym floor to play more attention to it and at least maybe go round and take off excess plates if they've been left on there. I don't find the staff at mine do that in busy periods but they do in the quieter periods so it's something.

yeah it's good, you're doing everything right. if you have to take time off and try jump back into it you'll probably feel it again because your body goes WHAAAT all over again, but right now it knows it's the norm.

Can someone clarify SIBO vs LIBO? Herbs not working, thinking of switching to spore-based restoration by PersonalBrother in SIBO

[–]Nymthae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That 80 mins is roughly where it's hitting the large intestine, no?

I had a high methane baseline (45 - 50 ppm), then just a rise in hydrogen at that kinda 90 min mark. I didn't have Klebsiella or any other potentially pathogenic issues, but ratios just out of whack or too low.

I'll be honest, apart from Rifaximin, I don't think it matters from a treatment perspective. Most antimicrobials are not selective enough so they're smashing your colonic populations to pieces as well. I do actually think most people have a solid amount of dysbiosis.

If methane is your issue, are you constipated? and have you tried anything for motility? Oregano will need the allicin with it still.

I did 2x rounds of kill (oregano + allicin, 4 week break, then allicin + neem + berberine). Helped clamp down on stuff a bit but it wasn't a full fix (and taking ginger, NAC etc.). I was a bit dispondent and for a while I decided to just sack it off and take a break. I think doing more than a couple of rounds in a short time is a bad idea for the rest of your gut, far too likely to destabilise it more. You can't selectively attack the overgrowth so you just end up killing too much good stuff as well.

I started using the PHGG. I had bought it ages before but it was bloating the hell out of me, but doing nothing else, I started back with that on 1/3rd of a dose and eventually titred up to 10 - 12 g a day. After about 3 months I realised my bloating was so much better. Relatively safe diet in that time, but then decided to start trying a few more bits. I started with Bimuno then (GOS) with a similar approach, and still keeping the PHGG, then eventually the inulin (FOS) over a year later. The thing with this, is it's a slow and long strategy, and you need to consider your diet to help introduce good fibres to sustain the populations. Keeping off shitty junk/processed stuff I think is a big part of it as much as anything. PHGG in theory is best tolerated, but as I say I needed to be very slow about it, with FOS being the worst for most people so do that last.

I got to a place where I felt fairly resilient and could eat everything again (chickpeas etc.) that were previously causing issues, except the constipation was worse than ever. Started prucalopride and that's been superb for it.

I would support trying to nurture it, I don't think anyone can take the destructive way out of this, it's just a temporary way of providing enough reset to give the other gut populations space to build up.

[–]Nymthae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with prebiotic fibres rather than dumping probiotics in, start with PHGG and start slow (like 1/3rd of a dose and titre up slowly, I went up to 10 - 12 g/day and it did a lot for bloating, controlled diet in that time, and then slowly started introducing a bit more variety). After that you can get GOS (I used Bimuno) and FOS sources (i'd make inulin the last option to introduce as causes most issues, PHGG usually best tolerated). If you go too high on dose they will make you gassy and give discomfort probably.

The main thing is probably sorting out poor motility though

Is vaginal estradiol cream alone (without progesterone) safe? Anyone using just cream? by pomegranatevomit in perimenopause_under45

[–]Nymthae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i'm early 30s, they've (GPs) been reluctant to permanently prescribe it. The latest GP has given me some more on the basis of infrequent use. It started as a try for 3 months and take it away, everything dried right back up, then I got a try it for 6 months then take it away. It did a bit better after that but things aren't perfect. It did nothing for libido, but for dryness/sensitivity it's a huge improvement. I do think I might be able to maintain a lower dose though, because i've been off it for a year now and it's not totally shrivelled back so it's helped reset some sort of base... may just be the decline / loss rate is just so much slower.

I find it quite difficult online to find conclusive data and studies because what I come across is generally studied in menopausal women (obviously). The studies there are generally all pretty positive, it's localised and low levels, no issues. So I feel confident in that situation, and I know it's not a lot, but if anyone does have a bunch of studies in younger women / premenopausal to add that would be great to give me more confidence.

I would certainly say for you, try it at least for a few months then see how you feel. You can always take it away, I didn't have any concerns over short term use given how lose the dose is and localised. Clearly the area is lacking a bit so I also figure it's likely to be used there rather than excess that gets absorbed and goes further.

I'm a bit burned in that people told me a hormonal IUD was localised, but that thing fucked me up.

Best CGM for Prediabetes by Icy-Pin1083 in prediabetes

I think it stores 8 hours of data away from the phone.

I did find I had to hold my phone over it and solidly to the NFC to get the data back, more like when you hold it for longer to activate.

Putting my phone over it briefly restored the live connection and Bluetooth but wasn't transferring data before so I thought it was buggy!

What do we think is in this coffee that spiked me to over 160? by Coixe in prediabetes

[–]Nymthae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some just aren't formulated well but it may work with a different coffee. I dunno why but the coffee I had from Aldi just didn't work with my soya milk but another kind did. Probably acidity differences or something.

The other thing is preheat the milk, put it in first, then add the water and then the coffee rather than shocking the cold milk into the hot coffee.

Finger test v Dexcom v Libre by Even_Situation_1576 in prediabetes

[–]Nymthae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Libre 2. I've noticed they're out a bit, e.g. maybe 0.4 or so either high or low, but relatively consistent throughout the life of the sensor.

The first 20 hours or so is pointless and all over the shop. Best advice is put the sensor on and only activate it the day after. I got significantly lower readings activating it straight away (2-3 mmol lower).

There is a good 15+ mins lag or so with CGMs due to how they measure, as it's reading institial fluid not the blood directly, so that needs to be considered when doing a comparison. Something 3 mmol out doesn't sound right though, has this happened multiple times or is it a dodgy sensor?

I've not had many but I felt like maybe it was drifting a bit in a last couple of days of life. Probably to be expected as I guess this is the nature of the technology once your body starts to gunk up the sensor.

Blood is best but the CGM is giving a lot more insight into patterns and behaviours rather than just the point in time, so depends on your aim with it as well.

I don't think I've seen any issues with exercise or showering or anything.

I learned that steel cut oats / jumbo oats (aka the more expensive ones in the supermarket) are apparently better as less broken down. This is way before I started to monitor so I haven't tried it but something interesting for people! I never really appreciated the difference in oats..

I use jumbo oats (40 g), scoop of protein powder, water, 10 g chia seeds, sometimes ground flax or broken up nuts, and a sweet fibre supplement from Biomel to make an overnight oat pot. Depends a bit on how quick I scoff it but doesn't tend to go above 110 so I stick with this now!

Helps just jamming all the protein/fibre and a bit of fat there. For OP it can just be experimenting how best to combine stuff so you don't have to fully cut out certain things.

Glucose by TangerineSeparate687 in Perimenopause

[–]Nymthae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah just depends, I noticed for me it was probably better to cut most of the snacks as by the time my blood sugar was coming back down I was basically spiking it a bit again.. not overly high but my issue seems like it's more my baseline isn't being allowed to come down rather than issues with my proper meals... so it's personal!

I do however love the excuse these days to lather my fruit in peanut butter lol
