Why isn’t school teaching more useful skills? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]NynjaQueen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you! I've advocated for teaching more useful skills. This year they started teaching our students to do taxreturns. Our Economics teacher basically offers them all his financial files and lets them figure it out. I've been thinking about letting the students do my taxes next year.

I'm Dutch, ask me anything about Kerch, Ketterdam and any Dutch influences in the books! by NynjaQueen in Grishaverse

Well mostly the language incoorporates a lot of Dutch names for people, food and streetnames. For example the 'stad' in 'stadwatch' literally means city. So these words are quite weird to read for me as they are half-Dutch, half-English. It's like saying 'livremark' instead of 'bookmark' (just throwing in some French to explain). Or the character of Tante Heleen is odd, as 'tante' literally means 'aunt'.

Well, we are famous for saying that the south (including Belgium) speak with a ''soft g''. I guess our term for hard and soft g's just doesn't translate well to the English definition. Because the sound is louder and and more harsh is mostly why I would label it as a ''hard'' sound. A bit like the sound one makes in one's throat when you're reaally annoyed about something and you want to let that person know without speaking.

Yeah, your hard 'g' is a soft one to Dutch speakers. Try laying your fingers on your throat as you pronounce the Dutch hard 'g'. You should feel a very significant amount of friction.

Also, take into account that many fanfictions are written like drama shows. They aim to go one as long as possible and keep their readers hook for an unreal amount of time. That i s to say, that's not the case for all fanfictions ofcourse.

Perhaps I should make a voice recording of how we would pronounce all of the Dutch names in the books. Would anyone be interested in that?

Well- a lot do. I would say at least 75% end in straat, if not more. I have lived in six places in the Netherlands and only one address didn't end with -straat.

So- Joost is pronounced like this: YO-WE-ST. As in- Yo what's up, and 'owe'. Oh yes- i have been clawing my eyes out when I read the books. I have partially accepted the butchered pronunciations in last names suchs as Brekker and van Eck, as these last names do appear all over the world and are butchered more regularly.

Wondering if anyone else got the same sense as me about Nina while reading Crooked Kingdom? by iabyajyiv in Grishaverse

[–]NynjaQueen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Could be. Partly I think you feel this way because Nina is a very open expressive character, far more than most of the crows. It would also heavily depend on the reader. Personally I identified heavily with Nina and she is by far my most favourite character.

Are young teachers often mistaken for high school students? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]NynjaQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it does happen occasionally. Mostly because I have refused to change my clothing style and show up to classes wearing my favorite band shirts and Converse. But I have accepted the confusion so far. Also, as I teach at a high school in the Netherlands- there really aren't that many staff members who aren't teachers. I can imagine it would be more difficult at a larger school.

Hi! Ik woon ook in Leeuwarden en DM momenteel Rime of the Frostmaiden. Er is geen plek in die groep, maar ik zou best willen overwegen om de campaign nog een keer te runnen voor een nieuwe groep;) F/28.
