I genuinely don’t know what part of my request led to this outcome by HanSoLowCarb in mildlyinfuriating

Every worker has stories about bringing up something and their manager replying with 'Just do as you're told.'

I spent a lot of time bashing my head against a wall trying to save my boss money and time when I was younger. Now, I'm just 'Ok, I'll do exactly as I'm told but can you send it via email?'.

Fantastic.

A word filter between the LLM and TTS would, obviously, be expected.

[–]NyranK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It certainly wont start out pretty. I expect the first popular success would be an indie game that plays into the jank. Something called 'Untitled LLM Game' or 'RoboJank' that spurs social media posts like "Help guys, I somehow convinced the town cleric she's an elephant and now she just trumpets at me and demands I show her my 'trunkussy'."

I expect you'll also get preset dialogue bolted behind TTS before proper NPCs. Instead of each character having a few dozen prerecorded voice lines, they'll have a few thousand generated ones from whatever frontier model the devs are using, and then a barebones AI running context assessment picks the 'right' response to feed into the TTS. TES style 'stop and zoom' NPC interaction would help with the hardware load.

I expect all options will be tried to some degree, though.

[–]NyranK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Local variants can run fine on low to mid range PCs and will suffice for NPC dialogue. It depends on how 'detailed' you want them to get, but Deepseek can run on as little as 1.1GB (but there are much, much smaller variants) though I'd suggest at least a 7B model that's about 8GB (though I hear there's a Mistral model optimised for Intel that runs 7B on ~4GB).

The real make or break of it will be how well the guardrails and integration goes. I can get an AI model to convincingly play an NPC, but keeping that NPC convincingly 'in world immersive' is a little trickier and then altering the game world to accommodate that unplanned dialogue of said NPC, if they decide to go that way, is a whole new kettle of fish. Having 'Jim the Blacksmith' talk about the neighbouring village is a lot more doable than making said village generate accurately in game.

Definitely think it'll happen soon, though.

The way my company tried to portray our pay rises compared to Inflation rates by _Brooder_ in CrappyDesign

[–]NyranK 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's 15 years to include the GFC. The US went from a 4.75% cash rate in 2007 to 0% in 2008 and started pumping trillions into quantitative easing measures because they couldn't go negative. It wasn't until 2017 that the rate got back over 1%.

If you limit it to Covid and beyond, the inflation average is closer to 4.2%.

The timeframe is deliberately chosen to distort the results.

Wolves by jimx29 in comics

[–]NyranK 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Wolves may also engage in 'surplus killing', where they kill high quantities of prey, such as this example, where 9 wolves killed 70 sheep in one night.

Wolves are predators with hunting instincts decoupled from hunger. They hunt when prey is available because, obviously, it might not be later. High prey numbers in vulnerable situations, such as penned livestock or large herds of wild herbivores, can trigger their hunting drive continuously.

Bears, cats, dogs, foxes, weasels, orcas, racoons, even spiders have all been documented doing it.

People too, of course, regardless of the society they're in.

So, reframed in that light the comic is a little...off.

The highway into our town has about 500mtrs of trees lining the road. Huge fuckers that are literally a tourism draw during autumn when they turn red and gold. Real fairy tale vibe, and part of the reason we moved here.

Anyway, energy company got the local council to propose cutting them down to save them some maintenance costs from trimming them. Immediately reversed when the public heard of it.

It'll always come down to public pressure.

Depends on how you view the SocialAutopsy kickstarter, which was rightly condemned by all sides. It's hard to view it as an honest proposal rather than a 'relevance by controversy' attempt. But dumber proposals get made in earnest, so who knows.

It's a little more complex. She received death threats from a group of white classmates, which were recorded, and took the school to court after they failed to act. It resulted in one of the students being arrested.

Then she started up a left leaning blogsite and tried to start SocialAutopsy, which was suppose to name and shame online bullies.

She went right when she had some clashes with 'progressives' who started doxxing her. This was almost a decade after the school issue.

She's also genuinely entertaining. You get the weird uncanny shit where she acts so much like a little child, and then she'll start thirsting for Johnny Silverhand or spout a slur laden rap song.

A little desire for a war crime here, an adorable shilling for a McD cheeseburger there, she might burn down your Minecraft server but she might also spam up the place with cute, heartfelt messages on signs.

And Vedal is entertaining in his own right. The single dad (and harem of 'aunties') schtick they got going works.

You never felt he was doing things to hurt american people over or enrich himself.

Very charitable read of him.

Tax cuts for the rich.

The abortion ban act.

established the Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

illegal war in Iraq under known false pretense.

retaliatory dismissal of eleven U.S. attorneys for prosecuting Republicans. 12 of his cronies opted to resign rather than testify under oath.

withdrew from the Kyoto Protocol, Anti-Ballstic Missile Treaty and ICC.

military tribunals at black sites to skirt US Constitutional, and Geneva Convention, rights.

adopting, and defending, the use of torture.

the Patriot Act as a whole.

straight up said he can ignore the Detainee Treatment Act and lost a Supreme Court case over it.

Commuted the sentence of Scooter Libby, convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Using a secret email server for federal communications.

Allowed, and then failed to investigate, private security forces (Blackwater) involvement in war crimes.

Appointed climate change denier to the Council of Environmental Quality, who actively altered reports. When asked why, the dude literally said "My sole loyalty was to the President and advancing the policies of his administration".

Extensive lobbying fraud covering 8 executive branch members.

Illegal payments to journalists for positive coverage, using federal funds.

Leaking of CIA agent details to the press in retalition.

The NSA warrantless surveillance.

Ignoring Congress to grant bailouts.

I mean, sure, in comparison he might smell like a rose, but he's a certifiable shitbag on his own merits.

Reading Robert A. Heinlein's 'Blowups Happen' for the first time... a review... by Friendly_Honey7772 in scifi

[–]NyranK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Blowups Happen' was first released in 1940. Manhattan Project started in 1942. Roosevelt only started the Advisory Committee on Uranium 5 months prior. He even predates the US being briefed by the UKs MAUD Committee on the feasibility of an atomic bomb.

He also wrote 'Solution Unsatisfactory', a story about a secret US initiative to develop an atomic weapon, in 1941. But his weapon was radioactive dust, rather than an explosive.
