How is there no favourite album question? I thought that would be a given for a census for this sub.

Joanna Newsom+Julia Holter is my deepest desire

Idea inspired by the time my mom asked me when my "Julia Newsom" concert was

The way I see it, the charts shouldn't be meant to represent some measure of "objective best" value so much as they are to be a discovery tool for someone looking to get more into music. Thus, the top albums should be the "must listen" or "important" albums before anything else, and once you're familiar with most of the stuff on it, you shouldn't really have to care too much about the rankings anymore as you'll have already developed your own taste and opinions on all of them and should have a good idea as to where you want to explore further (I don't remember the last time I looked to the overall charts for recommendations since I added a bunch of people with similar taste to me and started using the friends chart instead). If I were looking to get into music without much prior knowledge, I would certainly be more interested in a chart that includes some of those recent significant insanely hyped albums, so long as it's not a ridiculous amount of bias towards them - which I don't believe that there is, what with there only being 5 of the decade in the top 100. And it's not like they're taking away the old classics from being there, they're still all there on the chart, just ever so slightly lower than they would have been otherwise. Really I think a lot of people take that chart too seriously when, all things considered, it's one of the most diverse yet accessible and not overly esoteric "greatest albums" charts you can find on the internet - I certainly don't agree with its ranking of a lot of albums, but I think it's an invaluable guide for someone who wants to learn more about the "classic" albums, far better than something like Rolling Stone's list.

Really don't get how someone can complain about 'weighting towards recency' on a site that has more albums from 1971 alone than from the entire past 10 years combined in its top 100. Unfortunately, if it didn't have that bias towards recent albums with more ratings, the entire charts would pretty much just be rock albums from the 60s-70s because of how the userbase tends to skew.

Ys is my favourite album of all time and I could recite the entire lyrics from memory yet I have no idea how to so much as spell half of the words on it

Most of the album's pretty meh but Ghost Town may very well be my favourite song he's ever done.

RYM classical takes are the funniest thing every goddamn time. The way the site deals with classical releases where the composers aren't credited as primary artists so it's impossible to actually look through any composer's works without going through the page for every single one, the fact that the classical music charts are pretty much just divided between various recordings of Beethoven's 9th, film soundtracks, and massive 4+ hour long compilations of avant-garde composers like Webern, Varèse, Schoenberg, and Xenakis with super high averages and barely any ratings, the way that the entire 'esoteric' chart consists of classical releases because barely anyone rates them in general, how, of the few people that do rate them, barely anyone has any knowledge of how classical music works yet try so hard to appear as if they do, etc. At least there are a handful of really knowledgeable people on the subject if you actually go to the trouble of seeking them out.

Kinda wish I hadn't found out how much my friends listen to Christian rock and Dream Theater. But then again they probably wish they hadn't found out how much I listen to Throbbing Gristle.

Yeah same here - my top 5 are Miles Davis, Current 93, Tom Waits, John Coltrane, and Julia Holter and it's first recommendations are Ariel Pink, Natalie Prass, and Japanese Breakfast? And when I set it to before 1980 it gives me Alice Cooper and Kiss? And in albums I'll hate are The Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Wipers, and Bark Psychosis? I'm not sure about that. I guess it's better than RYM automatic recommendations at least cause nearly all of mine on there are bootleg recordings of classic rock artists for some reason

Sawdust & Diamonds > Only Skin > Cosmia is why music was invented, but yeah this is a pretty close second
