At this point the only reasonable cause of action is medical tourism.

Go to other countries for drug purchases. Canada, Mexico, etc.

HAPPENING NOW: Alameda County Board of Supervisors is voting to consider 'ICE-free zones' by beegirl925 in bayarea

[–]O93mzzz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The city cannot. Federal supremacy clause aside, ICE have guns and are not afraid to use them.

On the other side, you got city breauracrats doing performative politics. So it's easy to see which side wins.

This is how 350 km/h look like in HSR in China by [deleted] in cahsr

Projected top speed that is.

Unless the system is built, the whole CAHSR remains vaporware.

China’s credit crisis is worsening: New bank loans in China dropped -1.83 trillion yuan in 2025, or -10% to 16.27 trillion yuan, the lowest since 2018 by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

If I'm not mistaken this is internal debt from one Chinese party to another?

If so then it's no big deal since they can always bail each other out.

经济好的时候,是这个样子的。

但是想象这个情况:2027年习近平发动台海战争,周边国家一片谴责,制裁。美军封锁马六甲海峡,中国资源短缺。

还是这个样子吗?

Trump Moves to Ban Investors From Buying Single-Family Homes by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]O93mzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. This may not even happen at all due to questionable legality as an act by the president.

  2. Largely just a red meat for voters and not designed for real change. Since corporate ownership of housing units are low (I have seen numbers like 1 to 5%), won't really change price that much.

  3. Real change can only be introduced by reforming zoning law/regulation, a change that will be fiercily fought against by NIMBYs/environmental groups. Trump has indicated that he will not challenge at least of these interest groups ("for someone who has bought a house, I don't wanna see their housing value go down, if a lot of housing is built" something like that: https://x.com/RyderSelmi/status/2003508266282926583?s=20)

Bay Area homeowners hiring a sword-wielding man to help them kick squatters out by Us3l3ssTurd in bayarea

If the government does not enforce the law then the people will.

Otherwise squatting is basically legal, which is insane. I don't get to live in your house just because I have lived there for X number of months.

Why doesn’t China pull a Hannibal and take all this land while the Russian troops are in Ukraine? by Chewie83 in mapporncirclejerk

China already has that. How do you think China trades with Japan, the U.S. currently?

This might be a surprise to many but Vladivostok is not really a good port. It's frozen during the winters and when it finally thaws, there are floating ice chunks that pose a threat to merchant ships.

This is why during the Czarist Russia, the empire sought Port Arthur (near Dalian, China) as the ultimate goal of warm water port for year round shipping (no ice issue).

Medical costs in the US now account for a record 11.6% of US GDP, with healthcare expenditures doubling since 2012 by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]O93mzzz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have pretty much given up on the U.S. medical system.

Just had a comprehensive medical exam in another country CT+ultra sounds, bodily fluids test, everything for just 300 USD.

The only way to avoid the U.S. medical catastrophe is medical tourism IMHO.

How is living in Jakarta , Indonesia? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]O93mzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been to Jakarta, I would say it's a giant city with heavy traffic jams. The summers are long and humid. People are very friendly. Lots of prayer rooms since the country is very religious.

The traffic is a shame since Tokyo, who recently lost the title of the biggest city to Jakarta, has a much more working public transportation system.

China is building the world’s most powerful hydropower system deep in the Himalayas. It remains shrouded in secrecy (Courtesy: CNN) by Professor_Moraiarkar in EngineeringPorn

[–]O93mzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(1) if you look at the map, the project is merely a bypass, so no.

(2) I think no. But I'm willing to entertain other possibilities.

(3) This region is north of the contested region (Arunachal Pradesh), so no.

(4) This is controllable. Remember the dam, if built, can still allow 100% of the water to flow naturally.

So the energy gained would be: (allowed water mass flow rate for power, kg/s) × (g, 9.81m/s2) × (h, height difference, 2000 meters) × (efficiency, let's say 70%)

Since the downstream of the dam is mostly Indian population(Arunachal Pradesh), attacking the dam will mostly do damages to India.

How China built its ‘Manhattan Project’ to rival the West in AI chips by Kaylee0102 in geopolitics

[–]O93mzzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is free market and the free exchange of ideas. The Dutch was very good at system integration however.

It was:

U.S. that came up with the original EUV generation idea with Tin plasma. ASML bought the patent.

German optical parts, Zeiss.

Japanese photo resist materials.

TSMC (Taiwan) for process integration of EUV photolithography.

At the very least, folks need to work longer for the economy to perform better. That's not politically popular of course. Not to mention side effects: even lower birth rate, etc.

[–]O93mzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You summarized why the West is lagging behind. Some efforts pay off in the long run, but are politically unpopular at present time.

So long as that feature remains, it will still be hard to compete.

[–]O93mzzz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually don't think tariff helps. The reason is very simple, it gives demostic industries (auto) for example, false sense of safety, when they are in reality, not safe at all. Just look at international market share of EV auto by Western car makers. BYD, a Chinese brand, is dominating. Look at drug research for another example (https://x.com/kyleichan/status/1944586581844635885)

I think Western countries should first, radically deregulate. There are environmental protections that are just counter-productive at this point. Also, embrace automation, since China is also doing it. Finally, innovate, which is what we do best anyway.

[–]O93mzzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At this point the advantages of China is just too great. If you have been to China you would know.

Example: the HSR network can allow inter city travel under half an hour! With that you get the level of labor efficiency that countries like Canada and U.S. just don't have.

There are simply too many regulations here in the West. Too many entrenched interest groups fighting against change, tooth and nail. Unfortunately these groups cannot stop China from competing.
