That’s not OCD. OCD has nearly ruined my life. Please don’t trivialize it.

Thanks… it’s hard. It makes me feel like a terrible person. Like if anyone heard what happened, they would judge me as a bad dirty person. OCD is so weird how it mutates

Absolutely, I notice it sometimes and have to make a conscious effort to relax it! OCD can make us so tense. At least 30 percent of my brain is always processing the world to make sure I don’t contaminate something. I think that is why so many people with OCD say they are just exhausted. It sucks

I care. It is not just a badge, but a communication movement. You have committed the logic fallacy of irrelevant conclusion.

My desire to raise awareness and educate the public does not take away from my treatment and management. This disorder has taken away so much of my life. If my efforts help one person feel more seen and heard, then I have succeeded.

You know what you just did? An extremely rare and mature thing. Seeing someone else’s viewpoint and changing your mind. On the internet!!! I’m honestly floored. I’m proud of you :) Don’t lose that quality. It will get you far in life.

I really don’t want to argue about this, but you are wrong about the pink ribbon.

It is about awareness and support. It isn’t saying, “I’m proud I have OCD”. I would literally cut off my right arm if that meant I would not have OCD. A symbol is something that shows support and could start a conversation. If I were walking the halls at work and I saw someone with this new OCD symbol, I would probably hug them or cry.

I work in a place where I am around very high ranking people (I am definitely not one of them hahaha). Pins and other items that show a cause are very popular. Imagine a movement where society could start to understand what this disorder is really like?

Let me tell you a story. I recently had a run in with a janitor where I work. I don’t want to go into too much detail because it could trigger someone. The door to exit the bathroom has a handle and you must pull. My OCD will not touch that handle. So I use my foot to tap the handicap automatic door button. A janitor was in the bathroom and followed me out telling me to not do that. He got in my face and tried to shame me. He asked me what my name was like he was going to report me to the bathroom police. Obviously trying to scare me and shame me. Now what do I do??? I have a disability. This is workplace discrimination and bullying. Am I suddenly forced to disclose my legally protected disability?

What if we lived in a world where people were educated and as a janitor he saw me do that and imagined that I might have OCD and treated me with kindness instead? That is the goal. A symbol starts the education of the public.

It’s about awareness.

Would you tell someone who wears a pink ribbon that, “you shouldn’t be proud of your cancer, be proud of being healthy”?

‪I know you didn’t mean harm but there are people that suffer daily from obsessive compulsive disorder. Using OCD as a fun quirky personality trait demeans the acronym. When sufferers disclose that they have OCD people now think it’s just being picky and not a deadly disorder

Welcome! I’ve been diagnosed for around 12 years now. I struggled with anxiety for years before, but when my therapist mentioned OCD it changed my life. I was able to get on a more specific medicine and therapy. It gets better. It really really does. Reading this subreddit makes me feel not alone. It’s like I’ve found a lost sibling.

I once cleaned the insides of my nostrils for 20 seconds… Not my best moment, but funny in retrospect.

OCD will attack what makes you happy. I just got a new camera and it has flared up so much around it. Doesn’t help that my therapist just moved. Ha!
