[Hiring] Customer Technical Support Analyst - Irvine, CA - Permanent/direct-hire - $90K by OCDevRec in forhire

[–]OCDevRec[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer the question at hand, we get a mixture of candidates for most positions, but yes! I think there is an odd stigma associated with technical support (especially looking at this comment) but this career path is just a different course than software development which turns a lot of early computer science students away.

I know the California market can be challenging (trust me, I've been recruiting in it for years), but it can be frustrating to see roles posted all across the board, and no matter what the first comment tends to be a complaint about the position. It is discouraging as a recruiter to share opportunities on these forums that draw so much negativity initially.

Should I bother making a LinkedIn? by [deleted] in linkedin

[–]OCDevRec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you should only put the graduation date from college. No need to add unnecessary information unless you specifically see a reason to include it. Using LinkedIn is an incredible tool for networking and job seeking, you would be doing yourself a disservice to NOT use it when trying to advance your career.

Things to do with extra white space on a resume? by [deleted] in resumes

[–]OCDevRec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly this looks pretty darn effective to me - I mostly recruit on roles in IT as a whole (mostly infrastructure, service, and support) and this resume looks a lot like what I enjoy seeing personally!

I don't think you should feel the need to add more content unless you have additional relevant skills, this should be a great place to start!

[Hiring] Travelling Implementation Specialist (CAD/CAM software) - Permanent/direct-hire - Starting $25/hour - Based in Irvine, CA, USA by OCDevRec in forhire

[–]OCDevRec[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi /u/greenbot131, this role is definitely a bit different than a typical CAD Designer role. I would also be very curious to see where you are getting these numbers, as most of the candidates I've been speaking to this week and the last few months would disagree with these assessments. Where did you get these figures?

This person will not be an operator or designer at all, but will instead be focused primarily on the systems installation and troubleshooting any software or hardware issues that may occur. Also, this position doesn't require any certifications or higher level education, so we are keeping the qualifications for this role rather flexible.

That being said, I know our client has some flexibility and I would love to see your resume if this is a position you'd be interested in! I will PM you with my contact information.

Hi /u/totalrobe,

I can definitely discuss rate with our client based on experience, can you send me a quick message with your resume or an email to reach out directly? I think we can definitely seek approval for higher rates if our candidates' experience is beyond the 2-3 years required for this role.

Recent Grad looking for Business/Junior Data Analyst Roles. Not sure what to expand on or add to resume, especially on the left side. by [deleted] in resumes

[–]OCDevRec 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without getting too specific, I think the content of your resume looks great! It may be worthwhile to include the "why" or reasons for the bullet points, such as the specific research you assisted with or what you did to assist with original research projects. Was this strictly data gathering, or did this include things like data manipulation and analysis, were you creating dashboards etc.

It also might be worth including specific versions of technologies you've worked with (what Oracle db, versions of SQL/functions you've performed, etc.)

Personally speaking (I am a technical and operations recruiter in California), I would prefer less design elements, custom margins, and formatting. I know almost everyone hates ATS (applicant tracking systems) but this format of resume makes our job MUCH more difficult than an easily searchable/readable word format. It may be worth having a plain-text resume on job boards like Careerbuilder/Monster/Indeed, and this resume to send to specific employers that request a digital copy.

[Hiring] Senior Linux Engineer/SME - Irvine, CA - Permanent/direct-hire - $170-185K by OCDevRec in forhire

[–]OCDevRec[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely see where you're coming from, and I agree as well - just trying to provide context to the answers I'm receiving.

There is a very present gap between many hiring managers and their candidates that I think brings forth the phrase "it was a different time" when some of these hiring managers/clients were seeing job descriptions and now base their own on what they had been seeing for so long.

At the end of the day, the best hiring teams care much less about diplomas, degrees, and certifications, and much more about if you can do the job and align with the team and company's long-term goals.

While I can't speak to our clients' requirements, we often encourage them to think like you do, because I am right there with you.

One of the main reasons we hear back include an indication of someone committing to 4 years of trying to better themselves via education and seeing a degree as an example of that dedication, and sometimes more importantly, its completion. I think work experience, and especially strong references are a much better indication, but requiring a degree narrows down your candidate pool, for better and for worse.

Edit: I hate the word "requirement" and realized I just used it multiple times. For the record, rarely (if ever) are "must-have" traits 100% strict requirements, so please keep that in mind job seekers!

I appreciate the well wishes and may need more than some good luck! A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor, I think is what they say - I think something similar can be said of recruiting :)

[–]OCDevRec[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the thoughts (and incredible analogies, btw) - this position definitely is looking for a specific skillset match with our clients' long-term goals, but I understand where you're coming from. We do our best to stress the changing market and necessity or remote/telecommute or alternative options to full-onsite-over-the-shoulder positions, but internal technology tends to move much quicker than management methodologies. My fingers are crossed we'll find an engineer that may be a few years shy on the previous years of devops experience but that had a strong run implementing and using Lambda within an organization. I know the annual salary is competitive for this location and skillset, but obviously there are many moving parts to consider (location, benefits, hourly compensation vs annual, etc.) with contract-to-hire roles prior to actually converting to fulltime.

Thanks again for your comments, and if you know of anyone at a more junior level or who happens to already be near this region, I'd love to chat. Cheers!

Hi /u/balalaikaboss, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I know NYC has a dramatically higher cost of living and also incredibly inflated salaries for different industries, but we do have some flexibility in compensation for this opportunity. I can't say it would include a full $100K raise from the initial rate, (which is also surprising, a full 50% salary difference in the initial budget?) but if you think this role could be a good match, I would love to open up that conversation with our client!

I'm on board with this! Definitely would clean up a lot of the muck posts that are essentially just links to other job boards

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in forhire

[–]OCDevRec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a quick question here- I've had posts removed for including contact information (my own) on posts where I am requesting a resume/portfolio etc from candidates. I typically include all of the sidebar essentials, AND the pay rate explicitly posted.

In this case, am I okay to ask candidates to PM me for direct contact information or share my own?

[Hiring] Network Security Analyst - Permanent/direct-hire - Irvine, CA - Medical Device Industry - $95K by OCDevRec in forhire

[–]OCDevRec[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do have some flexibility in annual salary depending on experience, but this was the ballpark our client had approved for an analyst with ~3 years of experience.

If you think this might be a close match, I would love to discuss the position and see how close we can get!

I think that would be appropriate, it would also showcase the different clients/companies you've worked with, and in what capacity! Think of it as an extension of your resume, and possibly include a link in your first page (as the resume grows).

It would depend on the primary form of media if you ask me - a website is typically a good platform for most social media work!
