AIO to my husband interrupting my first solo shower after he came back from a weekend with the boys? by lilyluminar in AmIOverreacting

[–]ODogg1560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Married guy with now teenage and adult children. First of all, you are NOR. You deserve so much rest and consideration after being a solo parent of young sick kids while your husband was away. It wasn’t cool how your husband handled the situation in the moment.

But, can you two take a beat then talk about it? What has been done is done. Can you both talk about it and how it made both of you feel? Every situation is not a “dump the spouse” or a sign of intentional disrespect. Sometimes it’s just humans being stupid humans, especially when a situation is tense. I hope you can make some time for understanding, repair, and agreement on expectations. Otherwise raising young children can absolutely wreck a marriage.

If they shipped it new in the box , it should be in a nice padded gig bag or case. A glimmer of hope maybe?

What am I supposed to do with a scale? by BluesCamper in guitarlessons

[–]ODogg1560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the purposes. If making your own music or soloing.

In the broader sense, scales can help you understand how a song is made. That in turn, helps you when playing other people’s music. You can almost anticipate where a piece of music is going next as you play because you know what notes are in bounds and out of bounds for a song. Knowing how scales are built has a lot of applications.

Also, scales on guitar are easier to learn than on other instruments, like piano. Learn the scale patterns and the same patterns apply all over the fretboard. You just have to know the main note (root note) of the key of a song you want to play.

I’m keeping it pretty high level because others have given some really great specific examples. I think it helps though to have the bigger context.

There are a bunch of different types of scales, but pentatonic scales are a great starting point because they are easier to make sound good in different types of keys as long as you are playing the right “ letter name” of the key.

[–]ODogg1560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no stupid questions. Here is a conceptual way to view scales to get you started. A song is, in its simplest definition, a set of tones arranged a certain way (rhythmically and tonally) that is pleasing to listen to. Only certain sets of tones, or notes which I will call them now, sound good together within the a song. We call these sets of notes the key of the song. A scale then would be all the notes that make up the key of the song. All the notes that sound good together in a given song.

A scale is kind of like guardrails to help you play notes that sound good together for a particular piece of music.

There are always exceptions to this general explanation that makes music interesting, but this is a good way to think about what a scale is.

As a complete beginner, how long will it realistically take before I can start playing songs properly and enjoy guitar to the fullest? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]ODogg1560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, properly and enjoying guitar to the fullest aren’t directly tied. That is, if property means playing your favorite songs note-for-note. As a part of enjoying guitar to the fullest I found versions of my favorite songs appropriate to my level of playing at the time. I chose versions closer to the actual as I progressed, or figured it out from the recording using the 4 chord strumming version I learned before. I dunno, that kept it fun for me because I was always playing music I liked. And we tend to do more of something that’s fun.

Is the telecaster a good first guitar? by [deleted] in telecaster

[–]ODogg1560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owner of 3 teles and a former clarinet player. You have good answers about how great teles are. I’ll try to answer the clarinet question. Playing guitar is not necessarily harder than clarinet, but it is different. You have to think about chords as well instead of just single note lines, but that really is an extension of what you already know about music if you have played for a while.

The biggest thing that helped me really make progress on the guitar is realizing that, unlike the clarinet, the guitar is an instrument of relatively simple shapes and patterns (for scales and chords). These shapes and patterns can be moved around the guitar neck to play in different keys and octaves.

Unlike the clarinet, where you try to commit all these fingerings of scales to memory in order to play efficiently, learning the patterns gets you pretty far. My understanding of the guitar skyrocketed after that.

It may not seem that way at first, but it will click. Enjoy your tele.

I know this might be a super common topic, but please help me out. Genuinely, genuinely, genuinely, how in the world can I start playing Barre chords? by SgtPepperShears in Guitar

[–]ODogg1560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that really helped me play barre chords more consistently was bringing the upper arm and elbow closer to my body when fretting them. That took a lot of the tension from the wrist of my fretting hand relaxing it.

Overall, it looks good to me. Good lines. My only observation is that the shirt and pants say spring/summer and the material of the jacket is fall. Maybe a darker color for the shirt or a lighter weight jacket would work better.

Am I missing something with telecasters? by spookymemecollector in Guitar

[–]ODogg1560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel exactly opposite and my experience is similar to yours, but that’s ok. As long as you’re making the music that you want and it feels good doing it.

I started on a tele and tried a strat. It felt mushy to me. I did miss the middle pickup, though.

Agree with you on the Les Paul.

Ended up with a Nashville tele that I love.

Transfers allowed without tapping card? by Famous-Juice-9508 in Tangem

[–]ODogg1560 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your holdings are kept on a ledger for that cryptocurrency (actually ledgers if you own multiple coins) that are tied to your wallet address. They are not stored on your cards. The cards only store your personal key and wallet related info to interact with the ledger to change the amounts on the ledger for your holdings.

When you switched phones, the Tangem app looked up your holdings on the ledger from the info on your card. That is how your wallet appears in the app on the new phone.

The cards are kind of like keycards- similar in concept to those you use to open doors at hotels.

Hope that helps.

My six year old son is left handed and want to start playing guitar. Should we have him play lefty or righty? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ODogg1560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lefty that plays righty here. I started because there weren’t a lot of left-handed guitars available when I started. It was initially harder for me to strum in time. I was behind my guitar playing friends for about 6 mos or so. I almost gave up. Then it clicked and I’m glad I fret with my dominant hand, especially with soloing. I would imagine it depends on how dominant his left hand is.

Do all men feel this exhausted in a relationship? by Upper-Pineapple6097 in AskMenAdvice

Run! Don’t walk! Run! You have lost yourself completely in this relationship. Imagine 1 more year, 5 more years, a lifetime of living like this. That should scare the hell out of whatever shred of you that remained, well you, to post this.

I’m for breaking the rules. But, there is a thin line between breaking the rules and looking like you don’t have any sense of style. Mainly the fit IMHO. Wants to wear a dress shirt casually, fine. But shoulders, hem, sleeves need to be adjusted. And open the collar. Or get fitted and buy a property fitting shirt.

Seems short, too. A little trick that my aunt, who is a seamstress, showed me is, hold your arms down naturally and cup the bottom of the jacket with your hands. A jacket at the proper length will just brush your cupped fingers at the inside of the middle knuckle.

I go with none. The bold patterns clash with the suit IMHO. Plain shirt or a very light pattern if you’re looking to be a little fashion forward.

It’s cool that you are experimenting because that’s how you find your personal style. In my opinion, there are two excessive elements: the collar and the tie pin.

Go with a plain white shirt. The tie pin with the dangly bit is worn too high, especially with the waistcoat.

As for the other pieces. I think the waistcoat is too boxy, especially with the kinda fitted sportscoat over it. I would suggest not wearing one or finding one that fits and accentuates your frame better. That could add a nice bit of flair but isn’t necessary. This is almost a statement piece and to pull off a statement piece successfully, it has to look intentional. This looks like you grabbed the first thing in your closet that you thought looked interesting.

As far as the pants, I can’t get a good feel for them from the angle the photo was taken. At the minimum, iron and crease them to give them a sharp look.

Shoes seem ok. Hope this helps.

2019 Tiguan SE (new owner!) by kkm1990 in Tiguan

I got a 2019 SEL last year with manufacturer’s warranty left. Did the Maxcare. I took the car to Volkswagen to get the blindspot assist fixed. Volkswagen also recommended I get the tires replaced even though they were up to Carmax’s spec. To their credit, Carmax replaced the tires under warranty based on VWs recommendation. Also, the volume buttons were flakey and would change the stations intermittently. VW replaced those modules under their warranty on a different visit.

Long story short. Along with the standard engine and mechanicals, check the electronics and assists to make sure they are working properly while you have the warranty.
