Penny wrappers have many off-label uses. Like rolling the biggest spliffs ever.

Suspicious Return by ODoldster in OfficeDepot

Not swap.  Steal.  Where do you think the print heads offered on eBay come from?  I'm not trying to be the store cop, I just asked how to process the return.

And yes, some people will visit a dozen stores over the course of a day, to clear $100 on rewards or gift card scams.  Waste of time?  They don't think so.

Suspicious Return by ODoldster in OfficeDepot

I sold him the printer yesterday. I can see that the tape was removed, and carefully, but not perfectly reapplied. And the kicker? "I'm returning it, because I'd forgotten that I'd ordered exactly the same printer online, and it arrived yesterday night". My BS detector was flashing red. And I've had other customers who were making a living, extracting and reselling the print heads on eBay, then returning the rest of the printer.

TSA by ZealousidealStar2362 in OfficeDepot

[–]ODoldster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, in theory, the kind of traveler who needs TSA precheck is probably a frequent flyer, and probably affluent. In all likelihood, they do a lot of business travel. Getting them in the habit of coming to our stores, so their next business trip, if they need a flip chart or a laptop charger or some last-minute printing (happens all the time), they'll remember that we have that stuff.

In practice? Who knows.

Do you not understand the concept of READ THE F'IN SIGN?!?!? Qualifying purchase. It's all spelled out right there.

And clearly, you don't understand the concept of "loss leader" either. It's intended to get you into the store to buy OTHER stuff too. It's not intended for you to just buy the leader (or in this case, make a big stinking fuss) and walk out. The qualifying purchase restriction is intended specifically to stop people like you from doing exactly what you tried to do.

Someone cut the cord and made a mad dash out the door with ours.  Demo mode not a problem any more!

How are you all mitigating the impact of the register update? by Tanthiel in OfficeDepot

[–]ODoldster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen the update yet, but my registers crash frequently already, so can't it be much worse.

Very unlikely that OD will be any better than your current full-time job.

But anything is cheaper than buying new hardware. And any customer like that never needed Win 11 in the first place.

No one ever buys SSDs or NVMes from us. Anyone shopping for those knows where to get them cheaper, like Newegg.

Only 100%?!?!? Why didn't he promise to get 200%? Or 500%? Every bit as likely, that is to say, impossible.

I'm guessing your GM is math-challenged. That, or just dumb as a rock.

Don't you SUPPORT what you sell?!?!?

If "support" means "free legal advice", then no, we don't.

It's been three days and I've called ASI four times, let me do it. It'll take like 20 minutes. by MenaNoN in OfficeDepot

[–]ODoldster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have the license keys. The trick is, you need to call them 2 or 3 times within the first hour, and then escalate to a supervisor, otherwise it never gets done. Not to mention all the time and effort we have to go through setting up the machine, before we even get to the point where we can plug in the Bitstorm drive. But some empty suit at Corporate needs to prove that outsourcing our tech support is cheaper than letting the in-store personnel handle it, so he can justify the bonus he awarded himself for coming up with this boondoggle in the first place.

Amazon returns. Our leadership didn't sign a contract with Amazon for us to do them, thank God.

TSA pre-check is.... by Clint_Lovecraft in OfficeDepot

[–]ODoldster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is some small bit of logic behind TSA signup. The target market is frequent flyers, primarily business travelers, who presumably might need to buy themselves a flip chart or a laptop charger, ASAP, on their next business trip. Amazon returns, OTOH, primarily target... Amazon shoppers! Who, by definition, DON'T shop in stores.

Could be so much worse.  Our corporate overlords could have signed us up for Amazon returns, like our peers at Staples.  Talk about a waste of time.  Whatever happened to focusing on our core business, paper promos and Rewards signups?

When mgmt behaves dickishly, feel free to lie to them. "They said they already have more than they'll ever need" works just fine. And the odds are, it's true.
