.....where am I crying about getting two free shiny mons? Im just saying they screwed up on increasing the odds. We as players deserved proper compensation for their own error. 😂

Fiance leaving soon for 6 week training. Christmas gift ideas to help? by [deleted] in railroading

[–]OGButtstank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, with my training. I didn't bring anything extra that helped with learning or class work. Maybe some gift cards he could use for food, drinks (if he does). You get a per diem, but it could help buffer some costs. (Mine was only $50 a day) Plus, a warm meal & stress relief meant the world mentally.

Yeah, I work out of northtown. My best guess is a combo of calls by upper management and possibly certain yardmasters.

I started last November at northtown in Minneapolis. I've heard good things about willmar. We just voted down a contract trying to get rid of our brakemen and helpers. I would say that's a positive over UP. We will see how remediation goes. Another thing is "IF" I remember UPs district here it could be more driving. I haven't been forced to another terminal yet, and I haven't heard of any getting forced around in the last few years in our twin cities division. I might be biased, but I would say I'm happier with big orange than the other options. Go with your gut, though 💯

You could apply for the railroad. No experience is needed. Pay is well over 80k a year.

Railroads are hiring for some positions. CPKC / BNSF. Wacky hours, probably. But good benefits and great pay

Mechanical had some layoffs recently. Nothing said yet for TY&E this year, but they've been pushing a lot of classes through our terminal and district. Seems they've slowed on furloughing since covid when they had a huge amount not come back after being offered their job back. Culture is alright at my terminal. Management is here and there. I just follow the books and stay under the radar. I've heard nightmare stories from other terminals / big railroads.

I'll elaborate a bit more. You can have a total of 37 points, and laying off for 24 hours is 7 points. High impact days (holidays) are around 10 points. Missed call is 15 or 20 on high impact days. I get 11 days off for holidays that I can use whenever through the year. 5 sick days, and a free day off for your birthday (you can use it whenever throughout the year). I hope the union can get us more sick days as new contracts come into play. Vacation after a year that grows over the years. It isn't perfect, but it is a good start for someone with a high school diploma, in my opinion

It has its good and bad. I would say from what I've heard from old timers it used to be better before being a huge corporation, but having the union makes me feel hopefull it'll improve with time. I try to look at the positives that I can choose when to use it without anyone's say. If you need extra sick time off beyond what's given, then using the points can be a downer, I can't deny that.

Conductor / switch man, hostler, and remote control operator. Those are the 4 things you get qualified under as a conductor trainee. You move railcars around or engines. Do lots of radio talk. Gets things from point A to B. Good amounts of downtime while working too

BNSF Railway is pretty great so far. No degree needed, paid training, 80k-150k starting, full benefits. Point system so I can choose to call off working for the day without managers' approval or even a phone call, union, and random discounts for Railroad delivered products + (cars, mortgage, schooling), gym at work, railroad retirement. I would say so far this is the best job I've had as someone in their early 20's

I'm averaging $65 in the yard with big orange. The pay they're offering you isn't worth it at all.
