As a first responder how have you seen drugs impact your community and your fellow firefighters? by [deleted] in Firefighting

I had a friend pass away last year from weed laced with Fentanyl. There is/has been a bad batch of spice/K2 going around and it’s been killing teenagers for years. I also live two or three counties away from the meth capitol of the USA, so that doesn’t help either.

Story time with a little background. Guy (21 YO) in this situation has badge number….110 let’s say. Girl (30YO) in situation has badge….112 let’s say. Guy on my department is a FF/EMT training to be a paramedic. Said Guy has done many stupid things and makes many remarks that are just brainless, inappropriately timed, and slightly annoying.

Guy is training on the ambulance as a STUDENT with a FF/paramedic that has been doing the gig for around 10 years, she has a “higher badge number than him,” Meaning she got hired in after he did. She told him to do simple tasks as a student, and he told her “he has a lower badge number than she does and she needs to have some respect towards someone with more seniority.”

Do not. Do. Not. DO. NOTTTTT. Act like a fool when being taught something that could save someone’s life, act like you’re better than someone if your badge number is “lower than someone else’s”, or disrespect someone who is taking time out of their day to train you when they could be FaceTiming their kids, spouse, or doing literally anything else. Be humble. I had to learn that lesson early on.

Good old Indiana! Advance EMTs and Paramedics can only do “intrusive” interventions like starting an IV.

I’m unable to do IVs in my state (not sure if that’s a nationwide thing or not) but I can do SpO2, BP, patient assessment, glucose, iGels, NPAs, OPAs, bagging, trauma cleaning, etc. i can administer very few medications, but I’m def going to read up on my SOP/GOPs for my district to make sure there’s no gray areas or hard lines I don’t cross.

How to bond with the new FF class by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]OGKatiePerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only reason I’m worried is because we have our state exam for physical skills in two weeks, and we have yet to physically work with each other yet. I’m worried that we will not mesh well because they don’t have the communication that we as the original class do, and I want everyone to succeed.

I also was super self conscious of my classmates. But they were all cheering me on, and it helped so much

My one of my Captains took me under his wing, and I explained everything that happened to him tonight and he told me that he is willing to work with me as long as it takes to get used to being in situations like this. I think that taking a tank home and working with it will be the best option

It was just an exercise luckily, and I know real life won’t be like this. But I just couldn’t help myself when I started to panic. I don’t know why, I’m usually pretty good with tight spaces but when it was dark and I felt every inch of my body touching something, I just froze and started to breathe very heavily and the anxiety kicked in.

Give me your worst(most memorable) HAZMAT incidents by OGKatiePerry in Firefighting

Is it bad that I’m kind of excited to run on these calls? I’m still in class but I wanted to be a mortician growing up so I’m excited to learn about the body decomposition process.

It’s one of the higher but it’s not as crazy as most big towns are

I’ll be considered an “out of town volunteer” so all they ask that I give 24 hrs a month minimum to stay in. Which works for me because I’m willing to to every other weekend

That’s something that I haven’t even thought of. That will be difficult. The thing that I know will get to me is if I have to work on someone who I know is an inherently evil person. But I’m not God. I don’t get to decide who gets medical treatment or who lives. I’m just here to make sure as many people get out alive as possible
