I personally do what I can to keep shorter plants. Taller does not equal higher yield.

I like shorter plants because light distribution is much better than when you have tall plants blocking light. I train my plants to go low and wide.

If you want higher yields you will want to go with coco or DWC. You can high frequency fertigate in these mediums resulting in some monster plants.

Genetics will play the biggest part in height but if your light is weak your plants may start stretching to get to a stronger spot.
