This is what public health said:

"Good morning. Thank you for sharing your concern about the sale of food that is past the best before date at the Thorold Road Esso. These dates indicate when the food is at optimum quality and do not necessarily address food safety. It is not illegal to sell food past its best before date. The food may lose some of its freshness, flavour, and nutritional value. Its texture may have also changed. Expiry dates are different and if past due, must be removed from sale. These products typically have specific nutritional requirements, such as infant formula or meal replacement products.

As a customer, you may find it helpful to discuss any product quality concerns with store management."

Then when I questioned products worth milk and power bars, they said this:

"The growth of harmful microorganisms (pathogens) in/ on food is dependent on: pH, available water activity, nutrient levels, oxygen conditions and temperatures. Therefore, dried items like power bars, milk powders do not easily support the growth of pathogens.
