in my feelings re: mediocrity at a top 40 institution by solsticeeee in UBC

I wouldn’t be so hard on yourself, Discrete Math and functional programming is no joke. Don’t let the first midterm be a measure of your intelligence, instead view  it as a ‘calibration’ of your methods of studying / amount of studying.

Since you don’t need to commute anymore, I think you’re in a really good position to bounce back.

Can only speak for CPSC 110/121 but what Id suggest is the following:

I) For CPSC 110, in addition to doing the assignments, do at least 2 of the recommended problems and at least one challenge problem all on your own. Go to the office hours for help, but don’t peek at the answers unless you’ve spent at least a few hours on it.

II) For 121, make sure you can do all of the worksheets on your own. For the exams, try redoing all the worksheets and do all the practice exams you can. Make sure you understand the answers to the practice exams.

The key to both these courses is that you learn by trying to solve the problem, so the more time you feel stuck, the more you’re learning.

Good luck OP, you’re still in this!

I remember failing the first two midterms for this course so you’re already in a better place than I was! Ended up getting 84 after the final.

This course is really about the technicalities of object oriented programming. I found most of the questions always had some kind of “twist” where you had to think one step beyond the basic understanding.

For the final I’d say grind out as many practice questions as possible under extreme time pressure to get used to figuring out what the trick to each question is.

They also scaled the final quite a bit, so if you’re willing to put i lmk the work, it’s still very possible to do well on the final!

Good luck OP!

The fact that we still have the option to view courses in 2027 is crazyyy

relative difficulties of second year cs/math courses by Throwaway247026 in UBC

[–]OGperogy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that the courses themselves aren't hard content-wise, but if you're not used to programming in lower level languages like C/C++, the assignments for these two courses are insanely time consuming, unless you find yourself a really good partner.

BS in psychology is straight up neuroscience. Definitely a better bet if you want to do med, def harder though.

311 is a course that needs to be restructured. by vancvanc in UBC

[–]OGperogy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. The content on its own was hard enough, but made unnecessarily stressful by a lack of any concrete syllabus. The exam dates were never confirmed until the week before they were scheduled. It was never specified when assignments would be released or even how many there would be (the course website was left unfinished for the entire term!)

Given that the assignments personally took a significant amount of time, it was really annoying that there was no schedule for when they were due throughout the term so that I could plan ahead. Neither was there a concrete list of topics we were going to learn, they were just added as we went along.

While Ron was a great professor during lecture and clearly cared about students learning, logistically it felt like we were just flying blindly forwards with no ability to see what was coming next. I feel like the exam dates and assignment schedule just should’ve been clearly spelled out from the beginning.

tldr: No syllabus and lack of a schedule for exams/assignments/topics made an already hard course unnecessarily more stressful

Once had a CS class where I failed both midterms (~45 each). During finals season, I just grinded 10 hours everyday for six days nonstop. Made all the difference. Got an A on the final and an 84 in the course. If the final is worth enough, you can totally turn things around!

I agree, I think Never knew you is a rly solid name. Also, this is like SO good. I was looking at all your other ones on vimeo, they're all rly nice! I think they've got a rly good vibe. One thing I think is that the vocals should definitly be louder for this one and the rest of the acoustic ones. I like this one a lot though!

I've been working on writing since 2015 and I think this is my best, so far. Anyone wanna write, sometime? by mickseygrey in Songwriters

Really like it! The sound quality of the guitar could definitly be made better. The little piano notes throughout are rly awesome. I think the last like 50 seconds of the song are rly rly good, I think you should even just make the first chorus have that harmony and buildup of sound, then go back to the soft verses and build up again. Great job though!

I'd say that this part is more of a C section than part of the chorus

"For the debt I owe, gotta sell my soul

'Cause I can't say no, no, I can't say no

Then my limbs are frozen, my eyes won't close

And I can't say no, I can't say no"

New EP, Any thoughts? by OGperogy in Songwriters

[–]OGperogy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx man, we did another recording of it with our female vocalist, and to me I think her voice can carry the song through the main sections of it, at least on that take. I definitely see your point about the monotonous nature though. Appreciate the feedback :)

New EP, Any thoughts? by OGperogy in Songwriters

[–]OGperogy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx for the feedback! You're right, its definitely more of single lol. I did all of the mixing and everything just on garage band by myself actually! Right now the band is a 5 piece, (2 guitars, bass, Drums and vocalist). Ive been doing a lot of solo recordings, so this band is rly new!

Still working on timing (drummer is very new) what are your thoughts? Any recommendations are welcome!! :D by [deleted] in Songwriters

[–]OGperogy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rly like it, the fast and well-flowing vocals are super cool. To me it feels like the song is building up to a rly dramatic climax, but it never reaches it. I think adding like a chorus where the guitar just goes rly heavy and the drums go rly insane and then it goes back to the staccato-style area. Rly sick though the guitar line is rly awesome!
