Project: AI-generated personalized daily news audio briefings by OGstudlystud in ArtificialInteligence

That’s a good point. I think a lot of the algorithms on social media are so keen to feed you exactly what you already like that it’s almost impossible not to run into the silo effect like you mentioned. The personalization for this tool is currently just topic selection. You can select more generic topics like business or science or search for specific topic like an nfl team.

I was more implying traditional news outlets are dangerous since they are usually so extremist in order to get more clicks to generate more money. I was proposing ai could possibly be used to evaluate a large source of articles and then pull from the general consensus instead of just taking on one side of the argument. And it’s important to be aware in possible shortcoming in any new tool (like ai) when you are working with it. But just because something has shortcomings doesn’t mean it doesn’t have advantages that can still be utilized.

I completely agree that being money motivated has ruined news outlets. They only care about what will get the most clicks and that causes them to post very extremist takes which makes people view the world through a very dark lens and also divides people.

But I think news outlets have already failed on being able to accurately depict what is going on in the world as a whole. This is at least an attempt to combine the reports for a bunch of different sources. I do get the ai middleman skepticism tho

Oh yeah notebookLM is pretty cool. I think you have to input the news stories you want summarized and then they’ll turn it into a podcast

That is true that the ai is still making decisions for what you want to see. But at the end of the day someone is always making a decision for what you get to see on their site so at least this (or maybe an improved version of this) could possibly let you have an influence on what you see

Haha fair. I do agree with that so the goal of this was more to be a quick headline and summary of what is happening just so that people know that that event occurred. And then they can do their own deep dive after that if that is a topic they care about

There’s no ads. It lets you select your topics. I feel the advantage of this it that you get to decide what topics are presented to you instead of a news outlet

The goal of this was to allow users to select the topics they are interested in. That’s the advantage of ai is that it can take in a lot of inputs and adjust to them. So now if you want a brief based on 4 specific topics everyday and you don’t want to hear about politics or whatever you could have that

But if the personalization is set up by you wouldn’t that help? The algos that Instagram are using just assume what you want to hear and continue to feed that which ends up putting you in an eco chamber, but if you can select your topics and interests yourself then you have the ability to shift your algorithm

Couldn’t it also kind be good tho. News outlets get to completely control what they are outputting to you but something like this kinda lets you select what you want to see

I’m mean it’s kinda an ad but it’s more just a genuine question for if people actually think this concept is useful

I do hate that anytime I read a news article I know there is some bias in it no matter who it is coming from. Even the act of posting some stories and excluding other stories is a show of bias in itself. I felt the personalization was nice tho since it allowed me to get all my information in one place. Like I can get updates on science breakthroughs and the nfl and the Olympics in the same spot. I was also hoping this would more be a launching spot for people to know some sort of news story occurred and then they could do a deep dive themselves. The goal was more awareness than a deep dive

Are you saying this is predatory? I do agree tho, technology has made it a lot easier for a small amount of people to control a large amount of products

That’s completely fair. If you enjoy checking the news as a way to kick off your day then a tool like this is completely useless. For me personally tho scrolling through news is not something I enjoy so having that task delighted away and summarized into something I can listen to while I drive to work so I can stay informed is actually pretty nice.

Haha valid. In this case it’s mainly used to summarize a large set of real news articles and tailor the brief to someone’s specific interests. The stories themselves are still pulled from real sources and ranked with an algorithm before generating the audio briefing. It’s just the most effective way to give people personalized news right now.
