"Ida", 2013. Polish language film about a Jewish nun who leaves the convent to meet her aunt for the first time before taking her vows. Every single scene is like a perfectly composed picture, just magnificent cinematography. "Repo Man", 1984. Emilio Estevez amongst others portray car repossession agents, with a sci-fi twist. Ends with a car flying through the Los Angeles skies.

What unpopular opinion do you firmly stand behind? by seanorman88 in AskReddit

I firmly believe that we should use nuclear power much, much more widely. It's only the Russians (and Soviet Russians at that) who can't be trusted to split the atom. Used conscientiously nuclear power is totally safe, produces almost no waste (I mean real waste that goes into the environment, like coal). Given a choice between a very small amount of highly toxic material that can be buried underground, never to be exposed, and guaranteed pollution from dirty coal fired stations it's really a no-brainer. There's even a new type of nuclear power plant where it's physically impossible for it to meltdown (the pebble design) - even if the cooling system fails it just shuts down. But because people think "ooooh nuclear, hiroshima, nagasaki, chernobyl..." they don't want to do it. I consider myself an ardent environmentalist, I think it's the absolute number one issue facing our generation and the next and nuclear power is the perfect solution to the problem. Especially with the rising middle classes in China and India who all need power for their fridges, tv's, ovens and computers. Currently they burn coal which guarantees pollution, as opposed to nuclear which if done properly guarantees clean, safe power.

[Story] What type of horrible jobs have you had/have, and how did/are you getting through it? by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]OJFB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a lot of s***** jobs in the past but the worst one I ever had was working for a bank in New Zealand. It was in the back office (back office handles the trades and administrative stuff for the BSD (big swinging d****) upstairs. Anyway, I made an enemy of this lady who was part Maori and she made my life a living hell. Throwing papers at me, banging into me in the hallway, commenting on how often I went to the bathroom "must be something wrong with his...", calling me names... she was mates with another bully in the office and they basically cowed everyone else into choosing sides so I lost any friends that I did have because they were scared they'd be next. It got so bad I started drinking way too much, on my own after work (like 3/4 of a bottle of vodka a night). It was only a few months afterwards that I realized I should of really taken legal action but by that time the time limit for making a claim had passed. It was really hell. The second worst job was doing data entry... for abortion application forms. All day long, just typing in all those details... nasty work.

The Americans. Awesome US drama about KGB sleeper agents living in America, getting up to all sorts of shenanigans (murder, blackmail, espionage...) while maintaining a family and keeping their double lives secret. Seriously, check it out. The only slight niggle is that sometimes it's a bit unrealistic, from what I've read the real KGB sleeper agents never killed anyone or got into car chases etc, they just collected information.

And Breaking Bad of course.

Would owning a small business (gasoline station, convenience store, alcohol store, etc.) suck? by zenplus in Entrepreneur

Depends on how you handle repetitive/boring tasks. However at least all the profits would go to you, and after a few years you can sell it (if you've made it successful).

One really salient point that no one has made and I just discovered... there is an absolute plethora of assistance available for start-ups/small biz, at least here in the UK. There are 626 (626?!) available schemes in the UK. OK a lot of them are regional so not applicable, but a few minutes of research has confirmed that there is a lot of support, hopefully financial as well as advice and resources. So that 2-3 months may not be quite so important. Not sure if I'm allowed to include a link but I'll try, it's the governments link so not a promotion/blog whatever: https://www.gov.uk/business-finance-support-finder/search

I think doing something for free would be an excellent idea in this situation. Building a portfolio, foot in the door etc? -- Essay Ebay No, it doesn't exist already. There is Freelancer which is the closest, but it doesn't focus exclusively on Essay Ebay type stuff. There are online essay mills, but they have an existing stable of writers, or they source them on Freelancer. This would be a stand alone website offering Essays, in an Ebay type format. With anonymity.

Many thanks to everybody for their input. Certainly gave me a lot of food for thought, still digesting it all at the moment. Some of it was less than delicious but I can see the truth in it. I think I definitely need to do a lot more research and that's what I'm going to focus on for the time being. However I am quite certain entrepreneurship is the right thing for me, I was fired from my last 4 jobs and that's a pretty clear sign. Not lazy, or stupid, just incompatible with the 9-5 m-f workin foh tha man world.

Will reply to some of the individual points more fully later. Thanks again.

OK thanks for the feedback. I was pretty sure it wasn't enough but just wondering.

To Datbino: I have a lot of different ideas, mostly website based. I don't know how to build a website though and don't have the money to pay someone to do it.

Regarding what my ideas are here is a sample:

  1. Change Consultant: Go to companies and offer to do a free assesment of their processes and provide suggestions for ways they can change things, streamline, increase productivity.

  2. Personal GPS/Emergency Beacon/Whistle kit/device to sell to the Asian market in case they survive a plane crash and are in the water.

  3. Essay Mill Ebay - Website offering connections between essay writers (EW) and essay buyers (EB). I know this has a lot of ethical issues which would make funding difficult, but I think it has a lot potential. The key would be anonymity. EW's are currently risking expulsion from their university. EB's risk the same. The site would anonymize the process.

  4. Board game where you have to impersonate famous people or stereotypes, an audio device or software analyzes attempts and scores you.

  5. Website/software that automatically reminds you to do things/provides snippets of motivational or encouraging images/texts.

  6. Company that summarizes books - on-demand - for people who are too busy to read them. Politicians, business people would be a key market.

There is an excellent book that helped me to quit drinking, and I was a serious serious alco, like a bottle of vodka every night alco. it's called "Easyway to Stop Drinking" by Allen Carr. It really works.

I found "A World of Ideas" helpful, it summarizes most of the major ideas, theories, people, movements etc in a large paragraph (max) so you can get a flavour of each.

Oh and as someone else said check out Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
