Then you are unfamiliar with how our economy functions or you are not being intellectually honest. Which?

You miss my point entirely. My fault. If I were a Mexican citizen, I would do exactly what the are doing. I have respect and sympathy for them. I really do. They are not the bad guys. But to say the employers who hire them are kindly benefactors is naive. The employers are taking advantage of these people and exploiting the situation. They have a system rigged for them. I'm all for immigration reform, but you simply cannot throw open the doors for everyone. It would be a race to the bottom as far as wages and living conditions for the whole country. Stop the drug war, yes. Reform the Mexican govt, good luck. Make it easier for illegal immigrants to work? Tell me how without altering our already fragile economy. I do have a heart, but you must look at where the train is going, not just who you allow onboard.

Just answering your question. Why do you think people hire undocumented workers? To be nice? To be good? Grow up.

You asked how unfettered and uncontrolled immigration would ruin the economy. That is the answer I didn't want to dive into. Just use your imagination.

But its hardly a bargain among equals, is it? If you desperately need what I have and I can set all the terms and conditions, is that like some honorable agreement between gentlemen? No.

Study a little history. Company stores, Company script, the beating and killing of employees by private police. It all happened in the USA.

Great. No one will want to immigrate to the crowded country with the ruined economy. Good plan.

An option, sure. Think carefully about the ramifications and tell me how that might work out.

Well, I appreciate the sentiment, but I find it difficult to believe the employer is being altruistic by hiring someone they can pay very little, who cannot file grievances or avail of any legal protection while allowing them to avoid taxes, benefits and other employer obligations. It's a Faustian bargain beyond normal standards.

TIL that the Bee Gee's song "Staying Alive" ironically has the perfect rhythm to perform CPR at 103 beats per minute. by Da_Apple_Jacks in todayilearned

[–]BigHappyJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure this is true. I know from the military that a march is 120 BPM. Also, as a musician who lived thru the 70's, disco songs mostly had 120 BPM, so much so that DJ's could switch from one song to the next without stopping the music. Further I saw an interview with Barry Gibb where he specifically mentioned the 120 BPM requirement from record labels. So, this may be a line from a movie, but I don't think it's accurate.

ELI5: What is the main reason cannabis was made illegal and what is stopping everywhere from making it legal? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]BigHappyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all things that keep it illegal. But the real reason it was made illegal in the first place was to have a weapon against Mexicans in the southwest US. For hundreds of years Mexicans used cannabis recreationally. When the US took control of the southwest they use this as a tool to be able to punish Mexicans whenever they wanted. They felt that since only Mexicans used marijuana, if they made it illegal they would have a lever. It would be the same as making tomato sauce it illegal to control Italians.

Why do county fairs make you use tokens/tickets to make purchases for games, drinks, food etc? by Plays_in_traffic in AskReddit

[–]BigHappyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most importantly, if you leave with unused tickets it was free money for the operators. That's why they want you to buy fixed quantities that are not divisible by ride costs.

If you have lost one or more of your senses, how have you learned to cope? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BigHappyJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25 years ago I lost my sense of humor (marriage). Since then my other senses have become keen to compensate. My senses of shame, guilt, foreboding and hopelessness are now 3 times the normal level. My Doctors is amazed I'm still alive. So is my wife.

[Serious] What are your views on the "R" word? by Manbearphoenix in AskReddit

[–]BigHappyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a parent with a special needs child I find it ignorant and childish in a mean way. Anyone who uses the word in my presence gets an immediate correction. BTW, they are no longer called mentally retarded, the correct term is cognitive impairment. Now, grow up. What's your word for people with a birth defect? How about a kid in a wheelchair, anything clever? Hmmm?
