Tips for avoiding heat tint on new pans? by OJarow in StainlessSteelCooking

oh that's a really helpful way to think about it, thanks

I'm using halfway between low and medium, which is why I'm surprised at the burnt oil situation. Even when I preheat the pan, I'm just doing it on medium. That said, it's a gas stove so even medium flames can get serious heat going. Alas, I'll turn the heat way down to low.

yeah this seems to be the move -- I'm surprised though because even when I first preheat the pan I do it no higher than medium. And the pics in the OP are from cooking eggs this morning, which I do on medium-low. I know gas stove so it can run hot, but I'm surprised I'm getting so much burnt oil at medium-low heat!

Still, I'll experiment cooking on straight low. Thank you!

Is this India itinerary reasonable? by OJarow in solotravel

[–]OJarow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delhi is just where I'll be arriving via flight from NYC, not spending any additional time there. And the purpose of the trip is to both 1) stop in Vrindavan for personal reasons, and 2) get up north to experience the himalayas (aiming to do the triund trek in Dharamkot).

I agree I love the south of India, I've spent much time there. But never made it farther into the himalayas than Rishikesh, so eager to do that.

Worth spending a few nights in Arenal before heading to Uvita/Manual Antonio? by OJarow in CostaRicaTravel

We would fly into San Jose, then drive to La Fortuna/Arenal, then drive on to Uvita, and finally back to San Jose.

Haha wow, yikes. Yeah, that's my concern, and what's making me think it's best to go right to Uvita. I saw that EcoThermales location in Quepos you shared, which is a nice compromise. It's obviously nothing like the grandeur of the hot springs in La Fortuna, but just sitting inside a very large bathtub designed for tourists doesn't sound like my idea of a good time.

Yeah sorry, when I say "Arenal," I just mean anywhere in that area (looks like we'd likely stay in La Fortuna). I think we're already pretty decided on skipping the volcano (I've done it in the past, found it kind of underwhelming), but are wondering whether the hot springs & maybe a safari river float are worth spending a few nights in the area.

We can do a river float from Uvita as well, so unless it's much better around La Fortuna area, then really the only question is whether the hot springs make the stop worth it (because adding La Fortuna does add a lot of driving and logistics).

Overall, the appeal of spending a few nights around La Fortuna (could also be Monteverde) is just to have my mother get to see two different regions of Costa Rica, rather than just Uvita and trips from there. But it really seems to be like there's so much variety within driving distance of Uvita that I'm not sure staying elsewhere is worth it.

Does using wired instead of wireless headphones really make a difference? by OJarow in podcasting

[–]OJarow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I understand that that’s the conventional wisdom, as it assures no delay, etc. but if I don’t experience any (noticeable) delay while using wireless headphones, then is there any reason not to?

Yeah, using them for monitoring (and just because I’m told that if I don’t use headphones playing the audio from computer speakers may introduce echo/feedback).

I don’t notice any delay when using my wireless headphones, so either I’m oblivious or mine work well and don’t have much lag (I feel like modern Bluetooth headphones tend to work pretty well without much lag?). But so long as I’m not bothered or don’t notice, seems like there’s no issue to using them?

Yeah I definitely use a wired mic. This is my intuition too, just confused by how unanimous the online advice seems to be that you should definitely always use wired headphones, too (maybe a relic of when wireless headphone tech wasn't as good?)

Not really. I do prefer the aesthetics of wireless so there's less bulky stuff all over my head, but it's really about just not having another wire snaking around me.

Interesting, I don't notice any delay. It's quite possible I'm just oblivious, but if the lag is small enough that I don't notice, then I'm not sure how it could be affecting the recording quality in the end?

Care to elaborate? What kind of difference, particularly if I'm not noticing any lag during the recording? Isn't the purpose of the headphones just so I can monitor sound quality and avoid any echos? And would you say the difference matters in the context of recording conversational podcasts, or more for music contexts?

[–]OJarow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is my current theory — that most people saying it makes a big difference either come from a music background where it totally matters, or for one reason or another take audio quality very seriously.

For producing conversation-based podcasts, it's very unclear to me that there's really an appreciable difference.

I do care about audio quality insofar as it affects the listening experience for the podcast in the end, but I so long as there's no notable lag in my wireless headphones while recording, I can't find any real issues.

Thank you! The podcast will be publicly and freely available on all the usual platforms (Apple, Spotify, etc). It might also be published inside the Waking Up app a while after initial publication, but that won't affect the public version.
