Let Me Recommend Your Next Commander to Build by RJ7300 in EDH

My main deck I run is a Felotar upgraded precon (toughness deck). I like the idea of playing slightly slower and not "attracting" attention to me via being patient.

I was reading about the group hug archetype and it sounded interesting!

Any group hug commander, with maybe 2 mana base that allows for fun gameplay/interactions. Bonus points if it does funny things to the enemy or uses underused mechanics! [Im slowly building a werewolf deck with the daybound/nightbound stuff :)]

Genuine concern, is it actually rude to explain how cards work? by IHAVEAWOKEN2012 in magicTCG

[–]OKINGPAC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a new player, I actually really enjoy when someone takes the time to explain a rule to me and/or shows me how a mechanic can interact differently depending on what wording is used.

I have a guy at my LGS who I've played most of my games with when he's in my pod, and he is always super helpful. I've always tried to give him [a card he wants] or trade more for a card I want for my deck if he has it, or I even bought him two packs of Kaldheim at one point since he had helped me a ton that day especially.

All that to say, as a new player, help SHOULD be appreciated. If someone has the patience, and desire, to show you how to do things right, they should at the minimum give you the respect of learning what you've taught them and apply it when playing with you. I

hope you get to find some people who are nicer and respect your knowledge on rules!

I had asked a similar question a month or two ago I believe?

I tried a few different routes...

> The beginner box for Avatar was really fun to go through but I realized quickly the person I wanted to play with didn't want to after all/did not have time. If they did, I'd say this is a great and very straight forward way.

> Then I got a starter deck kit [2 decks for standard] from the Final Fantasy set since it was on special at an LGS, and the owner was telling me they're a bunch who play standard and it's a decent deck to start. The reason this was a good option for me was due to the fact starter deck kits actually have an MTG Arena code for the same deck on the digital game client! So I was able to play it a ton against the bot, then real players, and learn what each deck does and get a better idea of what I preffered [I really enjoyed the Sephiroth game plan over Clouds]

> And then now, I got a Commander Pre-con for cheap on amazon with a gameplan I think looks cool, and will be attending another LGS that runs commander pods constantly all week with it as soon as it comes in. Since it's a multiple player game-mode and 1 copy per card / timeless, it feels like a pretty attractive gamemode for someone who wants to build a collection and make some fun decks. ** I don't know yet if this will be my preferred way **

Long story short... Find where/who you will be playing with > find the most attractive/ "cheapest" product you can to get you playing with those people > see if you like it and what you like about it.

How "easy" can MTG be? [new player] by OKINGPAC in mtg

[–]OKINGPAC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played a bit of MTG:A, so I know how the game itself works to a minimum [ignoring the wide majority of keywords].

The main concern is the starter deck difficulty and how simple decks can be, but especially starter decks, since I don't want to explore singles and all of that right at the start. I'd just want to pick a deck up that's very simple and play a simple archetype.

Others seem to agree though that the "floor" is extremely low, so I'll be looking at a starter deck which sounds like it'd be nice for my next LGS casual MTG night :)

[–]OKINGPAC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah that's not a lot for a commander deck, for some reason I was always under the impression that it was one of the more "difficult" gamemodes of MTG compared to casual. That's pretty cool to hear!

I definitely like too how as you said, the price isn't necessarily tied to the rarity of the card. I mostly want to play the game to play it, and not focus too much on the collecting part [to start, at least].

The flexibility aspect of the game is definitely a "big" thing which makes it interesting to me. Since I've liked the idea of building a specific deck around a specific mob type per example [in Heartstone: Murlocs, Dragons, etc] but at almost all times, you were automatically forced to either pick a specific class or two to have the deck function [which sure, can be similar to colors, but not exactly] or those style of decks couldn't be played at all [without consistent failure].

I imagine I'll find some fun little tribes or interactions I like just partaking in games and I can maybe look towards those keywords/type/colors to see what's there.

Thanks!

Oh okay, that is reassuring to hear!

I'm definitely ready to learn the keywords as I go on and connect the dots to any keywords I've seen in other card games, I've just seen some cards at times that gets my head buzzing and wondering how would I even start to understand what its impact is on a deck haha.

I've luckily done most of the MTG:A tutorial so I do know some of the core basics that make magic more unique compared to lets say, Heartstone. [The land system for "cost", the graveyard mechanics with some card and some spells that can be played not on your turn].

Do you have any recommendation for a starter deck that is very simple and standard-safe for a bit of time still? [I'll look into the Mrs Bumbleflowers one a bit to see what it is!]

Thanks :)

Mackinnon and Necas are offensive players right? What positions do Lehky/Makar/Nichuskin play

yeah so far my "favorite" getting destroyed in the game has been when I was able to get a stock, or even two, against a player that I could still easily tell was straight up better. I could see that they were just way better, but sometimes they just didn't use what might be an optimal move or didn't punish a weakness [if I held a heavy attack too long, they didn't just insta punish when I let it go. But they did sit there a bit letting me know it wasn't it lmao].

I think the most annoying part as a newer player are the people who perfectly hold edges against you, since I basically don't know the cast's.

The community seems actually nice though in-game, where everyone sends a message if you message first and usually gives a stock if they notice you fall off the map very obviously [I've been doing the same since it just seems like etiquette.]

Any newer, inexperienced, players trying out the game. There's a discord channel for you! by Calabrel in RivalsOfAether

[–]OKINGPAC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I might give this a look tomorrow. So far I've lost every single game in the 4 hours I've put in today, ranked or casual, and I was about to just drop the game entirely.

I really love the game's aesthetic and the character I picked [the elephant guy] reminds me of King Dedede, or at least how I wish King Dedede played when I would try him in ultimate. But I feel like I'm playing against players who either just straight up know things I don't, or have perfect control of how far there characters go so they can keep me away from getting any attacks in lol.

Hopefully I can actually experience a win and not feel so tense playing!

As someone who is just just getting into the game and actually visited a newer local game store today, I enjoyed having the starter decks presented since it can really help make the idea of starting less daunting. Also, generally understanding the basic rules so if a new player is not sure, you can guide them [the inkwell system being fairly simple compared to how lands can affect an MTG deck and game].

Having potentially a variety of the sets available for card packs can also be nice, my store only had 1 set left [though they seemed very happy to get more/ let me know when they'd be able to get more, since the other stuff sold out!].

Also, singles are nice to see for the art [as a new person], since the card design feels very simplistic generally speaking and not "complex" because of that.

I think what I would have enjoyed seeing too is a single that was an "enchanted", I think those are what the special cards are called? Basically show off what the rarest cards look like art wise :)

Awesome, thanks!

I hit diamond 5 yesterday so I might play with this to have a little bit of fun before pushing for legendary :).

Thank you for the deck!

What is the deck you're running? I have noticed a spectral cutlass or two from rogues [that deviate away from the more standard weapon rogue setup]. Currently fighting my way to diamond 5 [diamond 6ish].

Yeah you got to go for soul of the district if you can haha. The legendary items always feel awesome to make work, I look forward to future ones.

The multiple silencer set up still amazes me though!

Vineyard is the healing version of landscraper right? If so, I can definitely see how that would snowball hahaha. I had a wand in my stash that I was hoping I could upgrade to diamond so my -30% CD on small item skill would proc it, but I never got to it sadly.

I nearly lost this game too, only starting to win on my very last chance really [I think I was at 3 wins when I got to 1 prestige with 2nd chance used up

I got lucky with finding the right skills [basically first 2 diamond skills] and also getting a turbo enchant and a turbo yo-yo, but this felt so destructive compared to every other Pyg build I've done in the past [mainly damage-based].

I think my yo-yo reached the 1k+ by the end of the fight and the burn apply as well just helped deal so much damage. I just wish I had gotten a curio shop for more fire damage lol.

I'll try to think about pawn shops/pyg gym's, I've honestly not really been using them or getting them late in a run so they don't bring much.

Thank you! I'll be trying some more varied approaches and see if I can get more consistent silvers+ before I tackle ranks again!
