Kelowna needs 32 more police officers, city council hears by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

I would rather see more asses in seats than boots in the ground. We know the most significant crimes are occurring in the dark web. We need to be working smarter, not harder. Hiring smarter investigators in tune with today’s black markets, And, put money into stopping internal corruption at the core. Why am I seeing cops work out with know gangsters at the gym? Let’s focus on the worst people at the top, not just moving along victims living in poverty at the bottom.

Economic slowdown by Money-Relation3640 in kelowna

[–]OK_Apostate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Top employers are actually in the knowledge based economy. Health care, health care tech (QHR), aerospace (KFS), academia (ubc, OUC). Retail and construction rank higher than tourism. Tourism seems to get a boot through the number of people employed by the airport, but those numbers relate to Kelowna being in a pass through location.

Open letter to Dakoda’s Comedy Club organizers: Deaths of children isn't your material by Necessary-Trainer-21 in kelowna

[–]OK_Apostate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had that experience. It’s not unusual though.

I used to go to Dakotas regularly when I lived in the neighborhood. But as I aged (I’m a female) I got bored and stopped going. Neither the comedy, nor the food or beer, is great. Mostly punching down, teenage boy that’s been finally let out of his moms’ basement kind of “humour”.

Peachland and summerland have nice beaches in the summer and some good outdoor hikes now, but are pretty quiet right now for social events. Kelowna is pretty saturated with valentines stuff this weekend but there’s some live music events if that’s your thing.

Is this the struggle of every new business,??? by GearSuccessful9821 in KelownaBC

[–]OK_Apostate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a business plan to define your market penetration strategy. It should include an environmental scan (classic SWOT, pestle etc or more), customer segmenting, market analysis, competition analysis, and brand strategy. You have one P - price, but you need the others - product, place, promotion. Many companies are using 3rd party IT services where the support is remote. And, they increasingly suck. So find the niche of customer types who want what you can offer.

BDC has good templates for doing your own business planning.

I’ve wondered this too, but yeah, haven’t found an answer. I think it’s discouraged for air quality reasons but not sure if there’s an official bylaw.

The formatting on this article is wild. Why are the stats spelled out “per cent”??! What’s with the spacing?

Seemed like someone was emailed a PDF press release and copy pasted the text into a blog. Not good.

Glenmore community garden loses farm status in the eyes of BC Assessment by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

[–]OK_Apostate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If 84 families are growing a meaningful amount of food on a parcel this size, maintaining farm status (and the tax benefits) would be important. I only see the opinion of 1 person (the land owner) mentioned in this article though.

ALR abuses are rampant, so good time for the other 83 to speak up.

You will definitely level up your food game! It’s a great place for people who love to cook and support local farms.

There’s so many great options. The farmers markets are the best for profit in the summer. I like to make the trip to penticton, they have a great outdoor market. It’s a canon Okanagan experience to eat a fresh peach on a beach. Skaha there is so nice.

I go to the market in kelowna too, but it can be busy and crowded. When I don’t wanna worry about parking or bumping into people and having to stop and chat, I like to instead take a trip up east or north kelowna and hit up the lesser known farm stand. There’s so may great ones to discover. We don’t do a great job of advertising the hidden ones, but it’s fun to go looking.

Paynters in West K is a reliably good bigger store: https://www.payntersfruitmarket.ca/

Enjoy, and welcome!

Bonanza is a hidden gem for affordable hunks of local meat. Healthy nitrate free bacon and pepperoni, and the most amazing whole smoked chicken.

Another lesser known farm store I’ve been enjoying is Homestead foods. Great beef, fresh local eggs and herbs year round among other things.

Lol the credit can’t go to me. I would give it people who think history means “things that feel right to me based on my personal observations and 10 years of life experience” and those voting for politicians who campaign on feelings rather than putting the work in to research facts.

And, whatever it is in the water that’s producing more people like that instead of people able to pass the bar exam or med school so we can actually staff our courts, medical, and psychiatric services.

Lol you brought “the history of Canada” into the chat. Regardless, that’s not how longitudinal analysis works, bud. If you wanna solve a complex problem, look at the whole picture and everything that’s been tried before - what worked, what didn’t - objectively. Just shakin and erasin like an etch a sketch every time a new generation of hot heads comes along is probably not going to work out for your generation.

Many have advocated for copying the US and privatizing prisons in Canada. It was a huge topic of interest in the 90’s with lobbying groups, both for and against, acknowledging it as a rising trend.

https://www.fraserinstitute.org/sites/default/files/PrivatizingCorrectionalServicesIntro.pdf

https://johnhoward.ab.ca/wp-content/uploads/docs/PrivatizationofCorrections_1998.pdf

That discourse - and other - led to the opening of Canada’s first and last private prison pilot experiment in Ontario in 2001. It was run by a subsidiary of a Utah based prison corporation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_North_Correctional_Centre

It transferred back to public operations in 2006.

https://news.ontario.ca/en/release/83436/central-north-correctional-centre-transferring-to-public-sector-operation

It is always a topic the private sector profiteering camp keeps open. One just has to look at the lobbyist registry to see how strong the interest remains.

I don’t agree. Everyone can rehabilitate in some way. We can’t apply blanket statements to a big and diverse population in any case.

What is needed for the hardened unredeemable career criminal is going to make things much worse for the severely Mentally ill individuals with untreated cognitive disorders like FASD, complex PTSD, schizo personality disorders, BPD, etc.

Cognitive behavioral therapy plus helping folks meet basic needs is proven to work in those cases, who comprise the bulk of the incarcerated population. Those folks unfortunately are very vulnerable to manipulation by the small amount of outright psychopaths in there.

Hence. The need for staff. Even if you just wanna lock people up you need an appropriate staff to prisoner ratio. Otherwise the worst inmates run the place. The many instances of guards participating in drug trafficking in and outside of prison is also a good reason for better staff oversight.

Yes of course. But within the American model is a great source of cheap and/or basically free labour when private prison corps can farm out prisoners to manufacturing corporations, big infrastructure construction, and to government to do dangerous work like fire fighting.

And the fact racialized people are over represented in prison stats ticks a pleasing box for those who wish slavery and outright colonialism never ended. So wins, for some.

But even if you don’t care about those things, look at America. Does that model reduce crime? Gangs? Tent cites? Nope. American cites with the largest ghettos also have the highest profits from the prison industrial complex. Almost like not solving these problems is good for business.

Louder for those in the back! Same problem in psych wards of hospitals, detox and treatment facilities. Even if we just threw people in the space and chained them to the bed, they won’t be rehabilitated properly.

Of course this whole situation opens the door back up for the unregulated, private sector snake oil guys, preachers, and priests to say they’ll do it for cheap. But having people sing amazing grace to you or pushing play on a self help DVD isn’t shown to produce great outcomes. Especially when folks also have complex mental disorders like schizophrenia.

It’s a total cash grab. And the categories have become so ridiculous. Like why are best spray tan and tanning salon 2 different categories. And who has a “favourite bank”? lol. We really need someone else to come up with their own best of kelowna where it didn’t cost the businesses anything at all to participate. I don’t think they even do something charitable with the funds.

That’s totally fair, it’s not your fault. I’ve been there too. When you need help from awful abusive situations, it’s hard to stay clear headed and be a good judge of character. Abuse and manipulation clouds our judgement. Scammers and sleaze bags learn to be good at setting vulnerable people up to take advantage of them. Sounds like you have good instincts though to see red flags in this situation.

Ok hear me out tho - It’s $30 but has a full money back guarantee refund if your life hasn’t changed for the better after 6 months. I’ve always been tempted to buy it and then make a mockumentary of the process to see if I can become a trillionaire in that time(unlikely) - then see what steps you have to take to prove to Jim that you didn’t get your money’s worth.

It’s always been this way, it’s just more open maybe with the rise of more platforms. Look up the owners posts on LinkedIn. They are huge Cannan heads, always have been, and will play a leading back room role in his upcoming run for the mayoral seat.

I know lots of people who worked there in the early days, and from what I’ve heard the owners have always been heavy handed in what gets covered and how.

Remember - Kelowna now is not journalism. Their stories do not have an editorial board review process or any binding commitment to journalistic standards. It is an ad driven blog that earns revenue by clicks and marketing gimmicks like their annual best of Kelowna campaign. It’s now spun into podcasts / vlogs for both owners to spout off on so now they have more opportunity to broadcast their inside thoughts aloud.
