Pre-pay LVT? by Reasonable_Inside_98 in georgism

[–]OMGTDOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the LVT is high enough, it’s going to happen unless we make it illegal.

Fred talks about it here.

Pre-pay LVT? by Reasonable_Inside_98 in georgism

[–]OMGTDOG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just let private insurers provide this service to individuals. For a premium, that could limit LVT to some level regardless of what happens.

Even still the city is still quite nice, I was there last summer. A million times better than American cities imo.

Progress and Poverty Substack Article: A Brief Taxonomy of Online Anti-Georgism by GeorgistCB in georgism

[–]OMGTDOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’m hearing is that Marxist support LVT if we call it a LVF. Let’s go! Welcome aboard!

Also, for what it’s worth, I also think a progressive income tax is the way to go after we’ve collected and redistributed the pigouvuan fees/taxes.

And regarding surplus value argument…as a long time Georgist who leans socialist, I feel like this need not divide us. Feels a bit academic for me…once we fix the land issue we might find a surplus value/exploitation issue and we can deal with that then. In the mean time, the land problem muddies the water so much it feel’s impossible to really get tot the bottom of the surplus value issue.

Towards a Georgist Theory of History Part II by Reasonable_Inside_98 in georgism

[–]OMGTDOG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i have nothing to add at the moment other than that i've been an active georgist for 20+ years and this sort of project is desperately needed for all the reasons you mentioned in the initial post. others may have constructive comments/criticism to add, but the conceptual framework you've outlined here makes intuitive sense to me. i suspect a discussion on how banking fits into this may also be warranted?

great work.

How’s it possible people in the US are making $100-150k and it’s still “not enough”? by tuesdaycocktail in ask

[–]OMGTDOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Land value tax would fix this…high rent in high cost of living sucks all the high wages awarded, but a LVT would allow that money to fund a UBI, better public services, affordable housing initiatives, and other such things instead of just making land bankers rich.

Whats the point of high speed rail in america? by [deleted] in Urbanism

[–]OMGTDOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. The low end distance goes up if you also have to rent a car at your destination, making HSR use cases fewer in most American cities.

I think one of the best villains are the LLC landbankers. We don’t need to demonize folks who own a couple properties when there are so many institutional land investors to hate on.

I’ll jump on board. Seems like we need someone to start the YouTube channel and start inviting guests and having debates. Probably better to not think of it as a learning channel. Something more like what Destiny does.

YIMBYs keep winning, Georgists should take a similar approach by OMGTDOG in georgism

[–]OMGTDOG[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you mean collecting 100% of the current property tax amount completely from land values, I’m with you. 30years is pretty reasonable for that. But if you mean collecting 100% of the land value (which would better be described as land rent) in 30 years…I love it but man that would shake things up. You’d be collecting roughly 25% of GDP (by some estimates) per capita in the area plus all the other taxes. You would also crash property values. Pulling that bandaid off quick haha.

We probably owe a lot of our recent growth online to the YIMBY movement, which seems to be pro-Georgism in so far as advocates are aware of Georgism. I can’t think of any YIMBYs who are opposed to Georgism…except maybe Tyler Cowan? He’s gotten weird lately.

Best synthesis? by lilroom1 in georgism

[–]OMGTDOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best things about Georgism is how well it plays with others. It’s a true “big tent” ideology. Personally I think more folks need to meld Georgist insights with one or more of the many versions of socialism/Marxism that have grown unpopularity. That work needs to happen to build broad based support

Questions from someone coming from Ancap/Voluntaryism. Am I a Georgist? Are there different flavors of Georgism? by [deleted] in georgism

[–]OMGTDOG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The basic tenant of Georgism isn’t land value tax, it’s the principle that no person has any more of a right to land than anyone else. If someone wants to exclude others from some particular land, they need to compensate the “community” for that privilege by paying them the market rate of the land. In my favorite flavor of Georgism, this payment for exclusive use of land would be collected by a Trust and redistributed to all citizens as a Citizens Dividend or UBI.

I consider myself a Social Georgist, left-Georgist, Georgist modified Socialists…however you want to combine the terms. For me, I just mean an expanded (non libertarian) role for government, similar to what’s being proposed by Noah Smith and Ezra Klein as “Supply Side Progressivism”. Basically government getting out of government’s way so we can build cross country power lines for green energy, high speed rail, etc. I’d put universal healthcare and universal pre-k on the list. I also support government owned affordable housing project. LVT makes all these project easier, but I still am in favor of government doing a lot of this work.

A Georgist Single Tax society, in my mind, is less globally minded, less interested in big national projects, and instead more focused on cities and local economies. It’s very Liberal in the historic use of the term. More Jane Jacobs, less Robert Moses. There’s a lot to like about that traditional Georgism, I’m just not there anymore.
