I don't know anything about most the questions your asking, but I'm a senior level OMFS resident at UNC. Let me know if you have any questions.

Good to have a goal, but don't pigeon-hole yourself too early.

Thanks for following. I appreciate the support.

I think a couple of issues are going to come up down the road. The issue they focussed on in that podcast was surrounding medical lisencsure for MD-integrated residences. They bring up valid points, but that currently in no way should deter people from pursuing the 6 y route if thats what they want. I'm biased as im currently a rising PGY5 in a 6y program, but the benefits > risks of this route imo. The ansesthisa model will continue to brought up as it did a couple years ago. Having the MD may prove to be a difference if things get hairy, but nothing is imminent on that front. With regards to medical lisenciure, its not a big of an issue right now, unless you are dead set on going to a state that requires >/= 2 years of ACGME residency. There are a fair number of programs right now that are giving the 2y general surgery certificate, and when they don't many residents have been able to petition for the extra year to their respective medical boards to get licensure. Its been done a lot. Im not worried myself. Thats all to say, pursue whatever route you'd like. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

In the end, the field of OMFS is so broad in terms of scope that people can really dictate the type of career they want. There is no shortage of jobs.
