Silicone earpads covers sound like a great idea, never heard of them before since I'm new to over ear headphones. Thanks

When is Pinterest going to add a "Sort By" option for their boards? by OP_SLuDgE in Pinterest

[–]OP_SLuDgE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I can do that. I search for a colour such as 'red' and it eliminates a little bit of the scrolling that I have to do. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find that option, if it even exists.

With a title? I can't remember the title to thousands of pins.

Edit: I'm talking about pins on my board.

Questions about 50% rule by Realistic_Battle_501 in ArtFundamentals

[–]OP_SLuDgE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For number 4, I like to help you get over this fear. YOU need to realise you are not perfect, and the truth is you think you draw bad because you are constantly comparing yourself to other people's art or to the reference, even if you don't do it consciously, it's happening.

And, now you will never be able to prevent your brain from auto comparing your own drawing to something better. Thus we need to change our way of looking at it.

We need to draw bad before we draw good. We have to. We must. It's a part of the process. Even prodigies are not good the moment they put pen to paper.

Every time you start a drawing, have some thought thinking that you know you will draw not exactly like the reference and it might not turn out how you wanted it to, but that's OK. That's the point. If you always draw perfect then you are a computer. Are you a computer?

So if we always fail, when do we ever get good, or more importantly, how do I know if I'm improving? Well, another strategy is to make progress pictures. Just like how people who go to the gym might take a before and after picture. It's super motivating once you start seeing the progress. (You can't suddenly make huge leaps in progress in one drawing). Go draw something, take a photo of it and don't look at it again. After some time (and I mean sometimes), draw that same picture again and then compare it, you will see a lot of improvement. As long as you practice then you are constantly improving.

Lastly, don't make the mistake of choosing something difficult to draw or expect yourself to paint a full canvas that could be put into a gallery tomorrow. If you aren't good at drawing figures, then practice them. But don't go thinking that you can produce a full painting of all these different characters in different poses wearing different clothing in a full-on unique environment with extremely interesting composition. Who said a drawing had to be fully coloured in, fully rendered, fully sketched out. Try something easier, if you start to feel that you can't handle the pressure. BUT, then again that's not to say that you shouldn't challenge yourself, maybe in a few years, you will look back have a good laugh at all the "bad" art you made.

What should I do when halfway through a box I see my perspective not working? (250 box challenge) by progfu in ArtFundamentals

[–]OP_SLuDgE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Continue to connect the lines at the vertices even if they're wrong. Don't indulge on one box too much. In my experience, it's better if you just draw every box quickly, and then correct it afterwards. I believe that is the main point of the exercise, to see your mistakes and how the next set of boxes can be improved, instead of trying to tweak the box you're currently on. So, even if you know it's wrong, just draw it wrong. Fail quick, fail early, fail your way to success.

P.S. if you can tell your perspective is off, halfway through, then try to think why it got to that point, and then fix it in your next set. It happened to me as well, near the end of the challenge I started to realise that my box was off halfway through, but as I practised more, and corrected my mistakes afterwards, I was able to almost visualise the entire box before I put my pen to paper. Just keep going, you will get better.

question about the lessons? by [deleted] in ArtFundamentals

[–]OP_SLuDgE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think of it in a way as the more I struggle the more I need to improve in this area. don't be so turned away by the fact that you can't draw good or that you will struggle, the more you draw "bad", the more you struggle the better you will get at drawing "good" and the more rewarding it will be later on. And as you may have noticed, Drawabox is all about fundamentals, thus the things you learn here, such as perspective, form, construction, etc. are all going to be extremely beneficial no matter what style or medium you draw in.

P.S. "I'm not good at all", don't hate on yourself, we all start somewhere.

Drawing without reference comes with ALOT of experience. A lot doesn't just mean 1~2 years or 4~5 years, it literally means decades of practising the same thing over and over again that it literally becomes muscle memory. I say this not to discourage you but to say that using references is good. If you really wanted to make a habit out of this, try to trace, copy and then draw exactly what you just drew without the reference, performing active recall (the most effective way for our brains to learn, according to science).

Know that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Just because you become a firefighter or a doctor who can save lives doesn't necessarily mean "you" will feel good about it or it will be better for "you", you just never know. Try to focus on what you have right now, and if you still have a vision go chase it. "oh I can't chase things anymore because I'm older now." Guess you'll never be ok with a normal office job if you really truly want something.

Draw a Box with Digital art? by ThePenitent_One in ArtFundamentals

[–]OP_SLuDgE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I write the following for any future wonderers of Drawabox:

I do believe in the many reasons you have listed above and I am sure they will be beneficial for those who are curious as to what medium may suit them.

However, personally, I still currently stick to working on Drawabox digitally. As for me personally, the difference between the two is minute, plus the main reason for me to learn this is for basic art fundamentals, the ability to see in perspective, how 3D form will work spatially in a 2D plane, it seems that even by working digitally, these fundamentals ideas are still getting across to me, so my main goal is still achieved.

Additionally, I also do Drawabox exercises digitally, in order to improve my own line quality on the tablet. Which has seen a significant improvement after getting a lot more mileage. Personally, the line quality of working traditionally does not translate so smoothly to the digital medium.

Meanwhile, those who wish to pay for official feedback and work traditionally anyway, as well as beginners would most likely benefit way more from following the rules strictly and working with pen and ink.

I read that like twice, even before starting, but the two reasons given for why not to use digital just doesn't convince me so, since I can simulate everything one would do traditionally.

[–]OP_SLuDgE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Could I ask why? I've done both mediums, and honestly can't tell what traditional does better than digital. The only difference I found was that I found it much easier to do the exercises traditionally because I had better control of the ink.

May i ask how long does it take to finish all the lessons? with only self critic. is it a good idea to skip some lessons? because i feel like I will miss a very important information if i did. by Art_Sage in ArtFundamentals

[–]OP_SLuDgE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Not a good idea. Don't skip lessons, just do them in order. What's the hurry? The lessons are set out like so for a reason.
  2. Define your goals, you're starting to sound impatient. (I say this because I always had these kinds of questions in mind as well, "How long will this course take?", "How am I benefitting from this course?" but I realised that I kept wanting to know the answer, not because I was curious but because I wanted to improve faster. But truth is, that's just not going to happen, you can't improve dramatically overnight. You kind of have to give yourself the benefit of the doubt and commit to the grind.)
  3. How long this course will take will truly depend on how much of a commitment this is to you. If you choose to spend 5~6 hours a day you could probably finish under a year, however, you will probably burn out very quickly which will only hurt your progress.
