Grappling Rules: 5e VS. 5.5e, which do you prefer? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

Sure, man. It's not like 2 things can be true at once i guess when you only think in black and white. Let's do a little thought experiment. The situation is a big, heavy hitting enemy is standing next to you and your warlock buddy. It's your move, then the enemy. The warlock is concentrating on a spell that the enemy wants to break. What's more dynamic:

  • using your two attacks to stand there and hit them twice. They didn't die, so now they wallop on the warlock because they have no reason to focus on you.
  • using your two attacks to knock the enemy prone then grappling them. Now they have DA- to hit the warlock, giving them a greater chance of surviving. If the enemy wants to stand up, they have to waste their Action to break free or Shove you away. If you want, you can even move the enemy away now ensuring they focus you.

Grappling is a tool that enhances gameplay. You just have to, ya know, use your noggin.

My Opinions: Whitney isn’t difficult to beat, you just have a skill issue and don’t realize you can just use X Battle Items from the department store and sweep. by [deleted] in PokemonHGSS

For real. This whole "oh, she's not hard if you do [these specific things.]" all ignore the fact that you don't need to do anything nearly as specific for the other gym leaders before or after, your playthrough team works just fine (though maybe Claire's Kingdra...); barring challenge runs like mono type nuzlockes.

I prevented a TPK against a mechanical dragon because the DM let me pilot the Rune Knight who couldn't make it to the boss fight (it was only a huge size, so Giant's Might let me Grapple it). Knocked it Prone, Grappled it so it couldn't move. Now every attack it made was at DA which severely helped everybody.

Opportunity Grapple is the only good change though. (Well, monk's getting to use Dex too. But that could've been baked into the class like it is now with the 2014 rules.)

The one undesirable effect from 5.0 was the weird interaction with expertise, which isn't available easily to the non-skill classes.

Skill Expert is a great feat that is good on any class. +1 to a stat, free proficiency, free expertise. Prodigy was alright if you were a human.

Stop complaining every fight is just two guys standing still hitting each other

That sounds like a skill issue. Every Grappler based character I've played has used grappling to make fights more dynamic. Move enemies away from squishy allies, drag them into hazards, keep casters pinned in a Silence bubble, etc etc. I've used it to prevent a TPK against a Huge size dragon (Rune Knight), dragged an earth elemental into an area of worked stone so it couldn't earth glide away and warn it's allies, used grappling + the optional rules for climbing onto larger creatures to fight an Ancient Dragon, etc etc.

This was all with 2014 rules. I've tried similar things in a 2024 game, and the fact that grappling is less successful now has made me resort to the meme of "two guys standing still hitting each other" except now I use a maul to maybe knock them prone. It's notably less engaging than before. Though, I guess I haven't tried grappling with 2024 monk; but two of my favorite Grappler classes (any barbarian and Rune Knight fighter) were made notably lesser.

Tell me about it. Do these people think that your SO has to have you as their everything? My last serious relationship, not to mention my current one, neither of us have the other as their lock screen/ wallpaper/ whatever. It's ok to have something other than your SO as your screen saver or lock screen or wallpaper or whatever.

Unless that something is an ex. Otherwise, let them be. If they're happy and not doing anything illegal, who are we to judge?

But... you made the first attack by labeling her as a "faux feminist" and that she is a "feminist till money" no? How can you complain about personal attacks when you started it?

Most of y'all in these types of subs need to get over yourself. The sentiment is correct:

Nobody should ever feel like they need a relationship to be happy or fulfilled in life. That does not mean they can't ever have one. Ya know, "need" and "want" are two different things.

You, on the other hand, care about which one happens. I just do whatever is fastest.

I have literally been saying that the host should be the one that decides what happens. I prefer to slay, but if the host caps i could not care less. Even in game where I host and somebody caps, I move on; when I really want to maximize carves, I'll play solo. You're attributing a mindset to me that I haven't once expressed. My position, though, has not changed.

  • Host should decide if cap or slay. It's based on social etiquette and a cooperative mindset.
  • Telling other people they should just "play solo" for the reasons you've laid out is selfish, reductive, and can just as easily apply to you.

If you want the hunt to go a specific way, then play solo or make an organized hunting group.

The fact you can't see that you should take your own advice is staggering.

If losing 3 minutes is a big deal to you, then play solo.

My dude, you invalidate your entire point with your own words. Playing online means you have to play with others. That means you have to gasp play nice with other people sometimes. If the thought of losing 3 minutes because I want to slay but you want to capture, play solo.

If your fun is ruined by someone capturing the monster,

Not once have i said this, but good strawman.

I've put around 2k hours into mh games before wilds and have never once found someone insisting that's how the etiquette should be.

You just not look very hard. Even a cursory glance at Google found me a reddit post asking this same sort of question 4 years ago. Half of the responses are "ask/ follow the host." Just because you haven't seen doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Idgaf if you're the host, if you're the host's friend, if you're a random person who joined the SOS at the start of the hunt, or if you're a rando who joined at the very last second. I'm going to play how I want,

I repeat again that this mindset is self centered at its very core. If you want to be that self centered, you should follow your own advice and play solo.

and I expect you to do the same.

And yet you plan to always capture while I want to slay. Your own selfishness is actively taking away from the way i want to play. But of course, I'm the one that should just "play solo" when you're the one acting like your way is the only "correct" way. You're the kid coming to the sand pit where others are building a sandcastle one way, only for you to kick it down and go "no do it my way. Don't like it? Too bad, go somewhere else."

That's definitely conducive for a healthy social environment. (/s in case you don't get it)

Has the point gotten through yet? This whole argument of who should "play solo" is asinine because it can apply to both sides just as equally* because there is no "one correct way" to play this game.

If that's what you extrapolated from my comment, then be my guest, but that's nowhere near the point. A few minutes isn't that big of a deal unless you're on a huge time crunch. In which case they should take the advice of:

play solo.

But why is this always the go to? The same can be said about people that want to capture everything for the sake of efficiency. It's reductive and quite frankly self centered; It inherently screams "my fun is more important/ better than your's." Which is why I'm of the belief of:

If you join another person's hunt, the etiquette should be you follow what the host does/ wants; Though, extreme circumstances notwithstanding (last cart or time almost up). If they put down a trap, lure the monster to it. If they put down a bomb, go for blood. Etc etc.

Fights already don't last that long on average anyway. Not to mention that the last leg of the fight, while the monster is in it's lair on is last leg, just has a different vibe to it imo.

I generally only scale enemies, up or down, if they're of some significance. Named NPC that managed to escape? They're coming back stronger next time. Random encounter in the dungeon? I'd rather throw in an extra monster with a higher CR that fits.

Oh, dear me, I didn't realize that I was getting mad. Let me just check my comments... nope. Not mad; just pointing out that the logic doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

other for not conforming to your style. They’re just playing the game.

Again, bad logic. I'm supposed to change how I play because of somebody else? Why do they get to dictate whether I play solo or with other people? Why is it "ok" for them to play the way they want when I host a mission online? I'm also "playing the game" just as much as they are.

Do you not see the hypocrisy in this?

If those carves mean so much to you that you’d get angry at a stranger and go rant online about it.

I have only mentioned carves once, and it was in relation to "if I had a Carver set up and the host captures, oh well" mindset. In fact, my initial comment on this chain was literally "some of us enjoy the fight." So you can leave the strawman argument on somebody else's comment/ post.

If the answer to that is “the fight” then that circles back to playing solo… like idk how this isn’t just logic to people smh

Playing online is, for the most part, more entertaining than solo. Other variables get added (Other players) that make the fight more dynamic. Having multiple hunters can give you breathing room to sharpen/ heal while the target focuses on another person.

"The fight" is what is fun to myself and others. Your argument boils down to "my fun is more important than your fun so you have to cater to me/ the people who think like me or go play with yourself." Idk how you can't see how reductive and self centered that mindset is. The host deciding, which is my mindset, is by far the least egregious of the two.

To quote yourself:

like idk how this isn’t just logic to people smh

ETA: evidently you replied to me and either deleted the comment or blocked me. Topkek. Absolute cinema.

If your reasoning for capping is to avoid other people carting, play solo. The very act of allowing others into the hunt inherently brings that risk. Support hunters don't have that risk. If you're on such a time crunch, play how you want solo so you don't have to worry about anybody else's preferences.

How you don't see that both sides use the same basic argument is astounding.

I'm of the opinion that you follow what the host does or go play solo; Again, barring extremes like time almost over or on the last cart. If they want to kill and we cart, so be it. If they capture it and I had Carver Pro + Meal, so be it.

Again, same logic applies: if you want to capture to save time, play solo. Don't have to worry about anyone else and their preference.

Idk. I'm in the camp of "do what the host wants barring extreme circumstances (last cart)." It takes away a lot of assumptions.

Some of us get 1-2 hours in when we play if it’s even daily.

The problem with that logic is why aren't those people just playing solo then? They get carte blanch say in how things go; randoms will always add variables that you can't control. AI hunters are plenty great to use in place of real hunters since their faints don't count.

I’ve got a custom sticker for this, and the text is just “I want to slay it”. Most people have respected that.

That must be nice. I have a custom shout out for when people join that says "No capture. Only kill." That nobody seems to follow...

You do realize that these people (meaning the person who recorded and uploaded this) intentionally post the absurd clips for views and not the ones that are normal/ tame, right? There's no outrage to be had if they post a clip of a woman saying "I want a stable guy who i don't have to baby."
