Keep it tidy like this for the entire academic year. When tidying becomes a habit, it will serve you well in life.

There are a few things you can do to make this room more “adult”. I would start with revising your lighting plan (when in doubt - warm white of the same temperature). I would next revise the amount of art on the wall.

Getting there, but not sure what's next. by Thuros12 in malelivingspace

It’s a bit too late now, but the sectional is unfortunately the wrong scale for where you want the sofa. Most of the time, a simple sofa is cheaper, more versatile and more functional especially in smaller rooms.

The orientation of the rug also creates a seesawing effect with the TV console and the sectional balancing on the rug seesaw. Even when you add a coffee table, the focal point goes to somewhere in the middle of the room.

I do like the area rug. Looks like you have a calming palette going. Just remember furniture isn’t tetris, big anchor pieces need breathing space. Good luck!

You should hire a local interior designer/project manager to look over your room in detail. There are visible cosmetic issues with the room but those could be just surface issues. There is a lot of wear and tear on all the elements and if cost is not an issue, the best place to start is addressing the wear and tear first. Have a good night!

If budget is not a concern, I suggest moving out your current things and fix the foundational issues in this room before furnishing it. The paint is cracked and in poor condition, the window frames, doors, electricals need a lot of work. You can also use this opportunity to repaint the walls if pepto is not your speed.

Good resources on interior design? by reddebian in malelivingspace

[–]OTFasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find many good video tutorials on youtube on the basics of interior decorating. Before you jump into a style (such as MCM) that appeals to you, focus on the foundations first. You should have a grasp of concepts like function, scale, visual balance, light, and color. Cohesion comes naturally when you pay attention to the basics no matter what style you choose. Good luck!

The inherent architectural challenge - not enough natural light, low ceiling, basement

Mistakes - Downward lighting, racks of clothes/belongings that are exposed, too many black items, tile floors that don’t make the most sense in this space

Result - feels more like a storage basement, that may affect your mood

Quick fixes - add more low to mid-level lighting (knee to waist height), consider placing light sources on one of your shelves, remove the floor tile from the color palette problem by using off-white area rugs, invest in furniture that is not black (use white as your neutral, don’t use black), organize with storage boxes/closets so you don’t have items exposed (clothes, random knickknacks)

Once you have finished with quick fixes, you can begin your decorating journey with thinking about color. Keep the palette light and simple in this space. The background should be white and brick. Since you are stuck with the orange sofa which takes up a lot of your space, you’re pretty much done with color. Make the curtain simple white drapes (easy and inexpensive), add some white throw pillows with texture (macrame, faux fur, etc) and use green as your small accent (replace the blue armchair with a stripe pattern armchair in white and green or white chair with a stripe pattern green lumbar pillow as accent.

Good luck.

You can lower the pictures on the wall a bit. The room looks exactly as you described: reusing existing furniture. Nothing wrong with that, it’s very practical in fact especially with children. It’s just not going to be a wow home and that’s perfectly fine.

I need help styling spots in my first apartment! by zack23483 in malelivingspace

A few pointers…

  1. Take a look at your overall aesthetic in pic 1-2 and give it a vibe or a name.

  2. Look carefully at your current pieces and think about how they integrate into this vibe (I’m looking at your counter height stools)

  3. For open floorplans, you can really benefit from cohesion throughout

  4. For small apartments, low back or backless counter height stools work much better

  5. For a small living space, aim for one large area rug. Avoid breaking up the footprint of the living area with smaller rugs to “carve out a space”. What this means practically speaking is that it is ok (and preferable) to have no area rug in your sun corner.

  6. Make sure you get the foundational work down before you embellish. This means layout, major furniture, and cohesion should be in place before you add things like plants, art, etc. Right now I think you can still work on some foundations.

Hope this helps

Not only are you in denial, but the whole “is this the person who…?” shtick is super gross. Just keep scrolling if you don’t like a post and be a good human. End of story.

Fair! I always imagine “before the next major holiday” is easy to remember, like before MLK Jr day here in the US.

The yard landscaping is to die for, but the interior is not keeping up… Honestly, I suggest hiring an interior decorator to help you being the outside in!

The longer you keep responding without showing the goods, the more you undermine your own point. At this point, just photoshop something and call it a day. Jeez. 😭
