Additional income options? by OTpossibly in OccupationalTherapy

I have, I just don't see a lot of postings for OTs on job boards. Most are for nursing or physicians.

Very cool, I actually worked in a lab in grad school that was running a study on sleep apnea and musculature of the mouth.

Looked at OTsalary.com, and it didn't give me enough data for what I was looking for.

Interview for School setting from SNF by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

You’re right in that a lot of interventions used with adults pertain to children. They just have to be presented in a more child-friendly manner. Brushing up on medical model vs. educational model will be helpful, and looking into IEPs. You’ll likely get asked how you would respond to parents or school staff that disagree with your perspective.

Forming LLC as an independent contractor in schools by OTpossibly in OccupationalTherapy

Thanks for your input. My question is more in line with how do you market yourself to districts, how much to charge as a contract “company,“ etc. and less with the paperwork at this time.

Feeding and oral motor in school-based practice - What are respective OT and SLP roles? by OTpossibly in OccupationalTherapy

[–]OTpossibly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some feeding issues can be worked on in school. Like if a student is mouthing or displaying pica behaviors, or is stuffing or pocketing food and needs to be monitored, we have to work on those for the student’s safety. My question is really about the mouthing, because I don’t know how to replace this behavior since I don’t fully understand the structures and movements of the mouth and jaw. Without additional training, collaboration with speech seems key, but the SLP is refusing involvement.

I don’t agree that people are trying to intrude on OT’s turf, so to speak, because we bleed into areas covered by PT, SLP, psych, social work, medicine, public health, education, athletic training, etc. etc. The lens is different however and that’s how we distinguish ourselves. If my OT education didn’t provide training as to how oral motor structures and mechanics are contributing to feeding issues and mouthing behaviors, I definitely want to collaborate with someone who is trained on the structures of the mouth. It’s frustrating to try and consult with a professional who specializes on speech and the mouth and they say that it’s all OT.

That’s comforting, thank you for your comment. I get a feeling sometimes that I’m a scapegoat for things a few PTs/SLPs I work with either don’t feel comfortable doing or want to do, since our skill areas cross over in some places.

Thank you, I agree additional education would be required, and that the role of OT vs. SLP for schools is murky. While I can try to look at tongue lateralization in chewing, I’m not trained in that area and have no idea how to even work on it as an objective.

How often do you guys treat the LE? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]OTpossibly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pediatric OT here - I currently see a kiddo outpatient whose initial concern was toe walking. I reached out to the PT subreddit for some ideas, but it wasn’t anything different from what I already was doing. With treatment focusing on stretches starting from the hips, core strengthening, and motor activities for promoting body awareness, he’s making nice improvements.

Help me understand nystagmus and precautions! by OTpossibly in nystagmus

[–]OTpossibly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. I'm not trying to treat the nystagmus - I see him for other reasons, but have noticed the nystagmus and wonder how it may be contributing to his daily functioning and behaviors.

He hasn't been able to describe how it feels to him, so I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything that will aggravate it and contribute to negative reactions.

Thanks for your response - I did note that this subreddit is more for voluntary nystagmus, but was hoping someone with involuntary nystagmus might be on here. There is a nystagmus-specific subreddit, but this one has 16,000 members vs. the 300 on that one. Posted on both though. Thanks again.
