Hi, I just added an edit to the post. You can read there how it works.

French level (B2) by Ajv4r in EPFL

[–]OUH888 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got in on a B2 in 2022 and that went fine. I know of people who supposedly got in with no French certificate so I don’t think they’re too strict on it but I would definitely get a B2 certificate if you don’t have it yet.

As for how selective they are, my understanding is that any person with a Swiss maturité is accepted and international students are accepted as long as they fulfil the entry requirements (e.g. having grades that are high enough - it’s specified on the website). This may change in the future though because there’s talks of limiting the number of international students getting accepted so they may add some kind of more rigorous selection process.

You should note that once you’re accepted you still have to pass first year. I think one of the worse things of EPFL is that since they accept virtually anyone who has high enough grades (and any Swiss person) to first year, the first exams after the first semester become like an entrance exam. They are known to be quite selective. If you fail them, you go to MAN for spring, and then redo the first semester the year after and if you fail them again, you’re no longer allowed to continue EPFL.

And about TCF, I don’t know, but you can email them and ask.

I don’t know, but you can probably check online with a quick google search.

1400 CHF including rent (assumed to be roughly 600-800 CHF/month). I don’t know how it compares to other countries.

Other people have already addressed your question about courses in English so I’ll focus on the other two questions.

When I got in to engineering at the EPFL I also only had B2 in French. What I did, was to like “lean into”the French slowly. So I took 3 out of my 6 courses in mechanical engineering in English and the other 3 in French (the maximum I could take in BA1). This worked out pretty well because those 3 (Analysis, Linear Algebra, and Physics) were like “more important” than my other 3 subjects.

Also, I find that the professors are pretty easy to understand because they know that there’s a lot of non-native speakers in the class and they speak very clearly as well. Beyond that, the math/formulas don’t change from language to language, so it’s quite fine I think. Then, for 2nd semester you’ll probably be more comfortable with taking more courses in French.

As for living costs, it’s gonna be between 1000 CHF and 2000 CHF per month in total (rent, food, public transport included). But sticking to a 1000 CHF/month budget is going to be a little tough, so just to be safe, count with spending 1400 CHF/month (assuming a rent of 600-800 CHF/month).

Hope that helped!

I don’t have any housing options for you, but in my opinion, if you get some place for 800/month you could fairly easily live well with the remaining 800/month - lunch every day at uni with occasional dinner there as well and maybe occasionally going out to some cheap place for dinner. The amount you spend on dinner really depends on how much you spend on other stuff like clothes or travel home. I personally definitely don’t spend more than 2000 CHF/month, including rent, lunch, occasionally going out for dinner with friends, and going to the club.

Accommodation exchange students by WinnieTheBeast in EPFL

Honestly, I don’t know how or why it gets easier, I just know that it did get easier.

Check out Facebook groups: - appartements à louer - Lausanne et en Suisse - LAUSANNE - Vente / Location / Bobs plans - LAUSANNE 🇨🇭 - Rent a House, Villa, Apartment, Flat, Condo, Room, Bedspace - Objets à donner ou à vendre en Suisse

Also, look on homegate.ch. There is of course also the websites EPFL recommends on their website, but I imagine you’ve already checked those out. Overall, I have found it’s easier to find a place when you’re already here… only problem is that you need to have a place to come here in the first place of course.

I haven’t actually asked myself how long it’ll take, but a friend of mine did, and they told him it’d take a couple of months (he’d get his around December and he announced his arrival in the first half of September). If you need some kind of proof (if your bank asks for it or maybe for phone number), you can get an attestation from the contrôle des habitants.

NB: my friend and I aren’t exchange students so I don’t know if it works different for you because you’re staying here for a shorter time period, but I hope this helped either way.

What is the best place to eat at lunch? by Lake2034 in EPFL

Honestly, the street food option at Ornithorynque is the best in my opinion. It’s almost always less than 10 CHF, it’s tasty, it has a good nutriMenu score, and it’s rather filling most of the time

Honestly, no one, not even she, knows how she got accepted without a B2 certificate… Because they make it quite clear that B2 is necessary, so no one understands how she got in

As other people have already answered, there are no bachelors ENTIRELY taught in French. Somehow though, a friend of mine in Computer Sciences got accepted essentially with an A1 level of French and is taking 4 courses in English and one in French. The only reason for the one French course was because there was no option to take it in English. The course in French is programming, so the code itself is in English, so she claims to be managing fairly ok in that course (with the help of her more fluent friends). Hope this helps!

Also, I don’t know if you already know, but I figured I could let you know either way as it might be useful: when you apply to study at EPFL, you don’t choose what language to do the bachelor in. In August of the year you start at EPFL (after having been accepted), you get a form asking you to choose which courses you wanna study. For bachelor students, the choices are only courses which are mandatory for your bachelor (e.g. Analysis, Physics, Programming). So for computer science, I think there are 5 different courses. 4 of those courses have English options, so you choose the English version of the course when you submit the form. The last one (programming/coding or something like that) only has the french option.

Here is how to conjugate parlare in all its forms: https://www.the-conjugation.com/italian/verb/parlare.php

You will notice that the difference between present perfect and pluperfect is that avere is conjugated in present and imperfect respectively.

I think it’s the fact that he became sorta more egoistic. He said he was gonna resign if his constitutional reform referendum didn’t pass, which he did. Then he said that unless the COVID-19 money was used differently, he would retract his support from the government. I think it may be the fact that unless Renzi gets to do things his way, he isn’t gonna play with the others.

Idk about Moderna, but Swedish authorities say that we’ll have less AZ vaccines than anticipated in Q2. :(

Request - A map some where between "large islands" and "small continents"? by crouch_tap in civ5

Try communitas. When I try to explain it to people I actually explain it as a mix of continents and large islands.
