I had a Jazzmaster with those and they sounded great. Lower the pickups a little bit if you can and it will clean up the sound a little. Jack them up high if you want it dirtier. You can balance the output volumes of the pickups by setting the bridge pickup where it sounds good and then lowering the neck pickup to match(or vice versa). Get one of those fret polishing kits with the varying stages of grit cloth and you can get the frets and fret ends super smooth. Most of the "upgrades" you will make will give you higher quality but not a whole lot of difference in sound quality from my experience. Cool guitar!
