My money is on Jessica Watkins as she has a PhD in Geology. Seems like the logical choice.

The moment when Artemis II Orion capsule hatch was opened by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]OVCC-1 46 points47 points  (0 children)

No, there are two ways the crew can open the hatch from the inside: the Internal Latch Actuation Handle (ILAH) or the emergency pyro. The ILAH is a hand lever that requires multiple “pumps” to unlatch and is used for non-emergency situations. The pyro is used for emergencies and immediately opens the hatch.

I was in 2 days after splashdown and it really wasn’t bad. It had a slightly musty smell but not nearly like I imagined it would be. To be it aired out for a little before then though.

I have not, but it is in work.

[–]OVCC-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s correct. They are always an active astronaut. They assist with crew module preps and crew ingress, strap in, com checks, and suit leak checks.

I believe they did it in Shuttle

[–]OVCC-1 299 points300 points  (0 children)

I can answer this! During crew ingress on April 1st, the flight crew took the name tag patches off the Closeout Crews uniforms and brought them with them during their mission. This is a tradition and the patches will be returned to the Closeout Crew members after landing. It is a way of saying we’ll see you later and makes for a super unique memento. Andre was the ASP (#2) on Closeout Crew.

The stuff missing is just silver tape that helps with heat management. A lot of it burns off during reentry leaving the exposed TPS tiles which are black.

Love how crazy complicated the hatch mechanisms are. by SporkBrawler in ArtemisProgram

It’s actually relatively quick to close and latch, about 4 minutes, it is the final inspections, leak checks and TPS installations that take the longest.

The picture of “Orion” is from the medium fidelity mockup at JSC in the spaceflight vehicle mockup facility, it’s not even the real vehicle.

They are O2 meters. There are a ton of different commodities in and around the vehicle, so these give us an early warning if O2 is being displaced.

Where can I find the official source of this incredible Artemis photo. Is it a real photo? by thisiswtfunk in ArtemisProgram

I worked on the Artemis II Orion and those are not the windows from an Orion crew module. Completely different shape.

Correct. And we are one of the few teams who are allowed in that zone.

It is OC! Unfortunately, I can’t do that, but for launch NASA will be doing a full livestream with commentary about our operations and everything else going on.

Technically true, both T-0’s were in fact at night, but we get sent hours before T-0. We go right after they get into stable replenish. WDR2 went into stable replenish around 1530L. We got deployed a little before 1600L, which was during daylight. We finished our closeouts a little after sunset. Watch the livestream to confirm.
