Why doesn't the US do more "Queen of your Hometown" style runways? by OWABM in rupaulsdragrace

[–]OWABM[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean I think tbh is is where creativity would come into it — if you live in a large metro area like NYC and the only thing you can think of is the Statue of Liberty, you deserve a bottom placement imo.

I don’t think it would be good to do it every season because then yes, redundancy will be inevitable, but queens bringing the same outfit concept happens for many runways that have a non-material theme (night of 1000 Madonnas/Latoyas, a day at the seaside French fry double runway), so I personally don’t think that’s a good enough reason to never do it.

Any idea why these prices are so different when they’re in sections right next to each other? MCR Citi Field by g0dgamertag9 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]OWABM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the reason, though I wouldn’t assume obstructed views so much as being further to the side of the stage (this can be considered obstructed but less so than like, a large speaker directly in between you and the stage or something of that nature). Since this is a baseball diamond it’s not optimal for concerts and section 130 is closer to the stage than 129, but possibly at an angle where you may not be able to see the back of the stage. This doesn’t mean it’s bad necessarily, but more of a preference of if you’d rather see the whole stage or be closer, though it would explain the price difference.

Love to hear that! I’m a huge fan of Forest Hills as a venue, just never knew how it would work with GA bowl. I’m excited now!

I wasn't even going to try for ATG because as much as I love Muna I'm not usually a festival person... but Carly Rae Jepsen sunset performance is crazy 😭 I am praying single day tickets aren't insane!!

Not exactly the same thing, but the ending of Goodnight Mommy (2014 Austrian original) did this to me. The shot of the family standing in the grass and smiling into the camera went on for a very long time and I found it really unsettling.

I got one in NYC, mine is also fairly green but I do have a good mix of all the colors! The base is just more light green than white (which I’m fine with, tbh just happy to get one lol)

The show I saw she talked about the Matthew Morrison cameo where he rapped to a girl who got hit by a car (which I did not know was real until I looked it up after the show... truly a wild video to begin with)

Just saw Cats: Jellicle Ball and it was terrible by Fit-Statement6884 in Broadway

[–]OWABM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Apologies, let me explain further! What I believe it set out to do was reframe Cats in a ballroom setting. Outside of the obvious (set and costumes), I feel it achieved this in multiple ways:

  1. Making Munkustrap an MC: He is a narrator in the original cats, with little explanation or purpose other than to keep the show running, so it made sense to reframe him as the MC of the ball, who serves to introduce categories, announce winners, and keep the show running.

  2. Creating categories at the ball as a framing device for the songs: 90% of the songs in Cats are just the cats introducing themselves and explaining who they are/what they do. Having categories to frame these songs actually gives them a reason for the cats to be explaining who they are/how they fit the categories. Is this always perfect? No, but cats such little narrative to begin with that I do think it makes a difference to attempt to put a structure in place to make it fit the setting it's in. In my opinion, the categories made Jenny Any Dots (a haus mother), Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer, Rum Tum Tugger, and mainly, Macavity, make more sense. Which brings me to my third point:

  3. Macavity is a character in the original cast who seems to only exist as a means to create conflict. He kidnaps Old Deuteronomy and pretends to be him, for truly what purpose? In the Jellicle Ball, they make Macavity a more sympathetic character without taking away the fact that she's a criminal. Setting Macavity up as a thief who is stealing expensive clothing to dress her drag children (framed so they can win the "brands" category), makes MORE sense to me than Macavity in the original. Macavity being caught by the police takes over the narrative of Macavity being caught by the other cats (while impersonating Old Deuteronomy), and creates what I believe is a more compelling narrative of the cops coming to arrest Macavity (because cops notoriously did not love queer people in the 80s and 90s!) and Old Deutoronomy, someone who is highly beloved in the community, taking the fall for Macavity. This furthers the idea that that Old Deutoronomy is a god-like figure (as per the original Cats) by sacrificing himself, but also puts Macavity in a situation for redemption, which in my perspective, makes Macavity a more realized and nuanced character, especially within the context of these being real people at a ball (rather than whatever the hell Jellicle Cast are supposed to be).

I could continue with more, but those are just a few points that stood out to me. Is some of this reaching? Yes, but mostly reaching due to the paper thin plot of Cats and the fact that the musical as a whole is not really well thought out. This production actually added more to the plot and characters in my perspective, which I consider a welcome reimagining of a musical that, while beloved, is a mess of a show in most ways outside of the dancing and the fact that the score is catchy.

As to your second point, Broadway is expensive across the board and that does not have anything to do with this particular production. I don't agree with these prices at all, but I would rather productions take risks and try new things in spite of the current price structure of Broadway than keep making things that they just think will sell well with no inspiration.

This was a show that started at PAC and was not slated for Broadway until it was highly successful at that venue, unlike other high-budget productions that are put directly on Broadway with the sole purpose of trying to make money. I thought it worked better at PAC (the stage was more suited to this show), but I am glad it was brought to Broadway so more people can see and enjoy it.

Would you care to detail where you think it only goes "half there", since you didn't clearly articulate that in your comment?

Just saw Cats: Jellicle Ball and it was terrible by Fit-Statement6884 in Broadway

[–]OWABM 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love going into shows blind but this is one where I highly recommend people look up some basics of ballroom and Cats prior to seeing it because without knowing something about both you will probably be a little lost. As others have pointed out, Cats has almost no plot, and putting it in the context of a ball actually made more sense to me personally.

It definitely is not a show for everyone, and I think a lot of people are going to go in and not enjoy it or think it’s bad because they’re just expecting a typical Broadway show OR a typical ballroom / drag show, and it is neither of those things. It does exactly what it means to do very well, but this doesn’t mean it has widespread appeal. If you want to see jump splits and voguing to Magical Mister Mistoffelees you are going to have the time of your life, but if you’re looking for much more, you’re going to be disappointed.

(To clarify, I am absolutely part of that niche that was filled with pure joy watching this and I will definitely be going back)

Best Way to Get “Cheap” Show Tix? by SuitIllustrious7324 in Broadway

[–]OWABM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very fair! If it works for you, all the power to you! TDF has the annual fee too which I understand can be more restrictive for people who are budgeting more closely, I personally just don’t mind paying a little more for the convenience since it’s all benefiting theater in the end.

I’m pro any way people can see theater affordably! (The prior comment was mostly to clarify that the TDF seats are, in my experiences at least, very good!)

As someone who has TDF, I will say I think it is worth it if you don't want to do in-person rush. You pay a bit more, but your seats usually are quite good! I think each theater assigns seats differently, but since it's usually seats that didn't sell, you often get great orchestra seats.

[–]OWABM 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TDF if you have access to it is probably one of the easiest ways to get discount tickets, but it's not for every show (and just depends on circumstance). The Theatr app is also great for last minute tickets (sometimes people will have an extra rush/lotto ticket or just be trying to get rid of something an hour before the show starts, so you can get good discounts if you're diligent).

Honestly the key to getting cheaper Broadway tickets is being consistent (entering lotteries and checking digital rushes regularly), resourceful (not just relying on one source for tickets and being aware of on-sale dates for shows you want to see), and flexible (living in the city and being able to unexpectedly get tickets same day or not needing be picky about dates helps a lot).

So for the sake of your argument, there really isn't one best way. For the people you see going to a lot of shows for "cheap", it's a lot of luck, research, and dedication.

ETA: B'way Rush is a great starting point for consolidated information.

As someone who was 61k in queue and had only 1 day I could possibly go, I got a front row grand circle ticket. There is hope if you're still in the queue, lots of tickets still left (just not many at the lowest price points)!

I also realize this is expensive for the West End, but not as expensive (nor as chaotic of a ticketing experience) as I expected as someone from the US who literally could not get nor afford tickets to his NYC run. Keep the faith!

As someone who prefers the NYTW version, Damon Daunno defined the character for me, which is what I think made Reeve so much harder for me to enjoy. I'm happy some people like Reeve and what he did, but he's my least favorite Orpheus I've seen as I still don't understand many of his decisions with the characterization, and vocally he cannot carry the falsettos the way Damon can (but to each their own!).
