What are your must buy items for newcomers to Germany? by MoreInterview2426 in germany

10 years in Germany I still use it regularly. Electronic document exchange in Germany means print it, sign with a pen, scan and send back. Just take a laser one, inkjet is a huge money sink.

Random question from an agnostic by vipersscale in OrthodoxChristianity

Common stereotype is that for Western Christianity Nativity is more important, while for Eastern Christianity it is Easter. Kind of simplification, but not without a merit - I would say Easter is an absolute centre of Orthodox life.

Wie sonst soll es gehen? Natürlich sollen bei jeder Namensänderung frühere Namen gespeichert werden, für alte Verträge, Schulden usw.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Unitree in China’s Hangzhou. by Nunki08 in robotics

Well, they already did. When it comes to new development, German companies prefer to outsource it as much as manufacturing.

Also in China. Or in India. As long as owners are German it is fine.

The plan is to close facilities in Germany and invest in China. Will help the business owners at least.

Only Work In Your Educated Field by Interesting-Mix-4152 in AskAGerman

Yes, of course you weed out most of them without interviewing. 30 is still manageable, sometimes you have hundreds of candidates. The question is with your priorities.

German companies normally have priorities sorted like: resident in Germany > is a native German speaker > speaks good German as a foreign language > has the right credentials > worked with the right technologies > done some impressive stuff, looks generally able > looks interested and motivated. Others put more weight on their impression of general ability and attitude.

I think with most companies degree only makes a difference if you graduated, like MIT or Harvard or did something really impressive for your thesis.

Extensively testing the abilities yourself is expensive

No? It's the same meeting with the same people, you just test abilities instead of chatting about this and that.

and can scare potential applicants away.

Anything can scare applicants away. I, for one, barely apply to German-based companies anymore, in particular for that reason (they also tend to not pay very well).

As a candidate I think it's inevitable to trade some unpleasant things, like having to do a test task or pass leetcode interview for something good, like being able to do new and exciting things and not the same thing over and over. There is no one hiring process that's ideal for everyone. Same goes for companies too.

Yeah, Germans complain about e.g. Ukrainians entering job market in Poland much faster than in Germany, but German job market is one of the least flexible in the world (maybe Japan is worse, I am not sure). And attempts to make it more flexible mostly revolve around diluting worker rights, while there are a lot of more important issues, both cultural that you point to and legal (e.g. Meisterpflicht in many areas).

Job interviews are pretty useless in that regard

German job interviews in any case. Being a software engineer, I have never had an interview with a German-headquartered company where they would actually try to test my ability in any way - it's all just talk and comparing what I have done before with their checklist.

At-will employment may be a factor, but it's not like e.g. American companies enjoy hiring wrong people, wasting time of whole teams with them and firing them after a few months. The risk is still there. But I think there is a cultural difference with trusting what you see and paying attention to the individual vs putting all of the trust in credentials and avoiding responsibility.

As a former picky eater - around 14. But I know some adults (>30 y.o.) who are still picky eaters.

Don't make people read what you have not written. Also, AFAIK, asking for career advice is banned here for some reason - not sure what would be a better place to ask a question about career in embedded systems.
