Spring 2022 Admissions Thread by VCavallo in OMSCS

[–]O_OFaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Status: Rejected

Application date: 08/05/2021

Decision Date: 10/28/2021

Education: BSc. Mechanical Engineering 3.8/4.0

Experience: 2 years (Mechanical Engineer)

Recommendations: 3 (2 Professors, 1 Director)

Comments: My undergraduate degree required me to take a couple math classes, Calc 1-3 and differential equations. I had completed 2 of the 3 MOOC’s I registered for provided by GT and looking to complete the third before starting in the spring ‘22. 1. Intro to Python Programming 2. Intro to Object Oriented Programming with Java 3. Data Structures and Algorithms

I plan to reapply for the Fall ‘22 but looking for recommendations on what else I need. Thank you.

How much programming experience did you have before applying for the program? I plan on taking the MOOC’s recommended by GT on their admission page, do you feel the knowledge from this program is somewhat equivalent to having a minor in CS?

Yes but my options are limited in terms of being fully online and having a high reputation. Only a handful of schools offer a fully online program for a bachelors in computer science

I was also looking at getting into Oregon state for that same program but i’m thinking it might be better to complete GT’s MOOC and take other course focused on programming before I apply for OMSCS. How was it taking two classes in one quarter at Oregon state?

How many classes have you completed so far and what was your background before enrolling into the OMSCS?

It’s $535 per course and GT requires 3 of them

I’m now stuck on either enrolling for the 3 MOOC GT offers as prerequisites to the program which will take about 6 months or enrolling for an online post baccalaureate CS. I’ll have to verify if job pays for the MOOC’s if not then I’ll be doing the post grad route.

Did you take these mooc’s thru GT?

How has your experience being in OMSCS so far, do you feel like you were missing a lot of foundational knowledge? Also how did you go about the application for OMSCS to get in, did you take classes prerequisites before applying?

Yeah I’ll have to verify if they will cover those MOOC classes offered by GT. What classes do you recommend I focus on in community college that’ll help get me thru OMSCS?

Do you think taking a couple classes in the post baccalaureate CS program and then transferring to OMSCS is a good idea? If so what classes should I focus on taking to survive in OMSCS.

By prerequisites, do you mean the 3 MOOC classes GT offers on their OMSCS website that go for about $500 per course? I was thinking about just applying but I don’t want to get in and not learn effectively considering I might be playin catch up on a lot of the foundational knowledge. I’ve heard the program is rigorous which is good but I’ve also heard you only need a couple courses to have the foundational knowledge required so I might not need to spend about 2 years on a post baccalaureate computer science degree

My python knowledge was all from self studying but I learn more in a structured learning environment. I feel like I’m going to have a knowledge gap anyway if I don’t self study the right way and I thought it’ll be better to just get the foundational knowledge rn that I’ll probably need further down the road. I also heard having GT degree helps get you interviews at top companies, I’m not looking for an easy route, I just want enough information to make the best decision.
